Bound By Blood

Chapter 85

Ch. 85 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

The cacophony of the Crimson Court’s masquerade ball faded as Ella followed Elias through a narrow corridor lit by flickering crimson sconces. Each step she took felt heavier than the last, as though the weight of her uncertainty grew with the silence. The haunting melody of violins from the ballroom below echoed faintly, a backdrop to the unsettling quiet that enveloped them.

Elias moved ahead of her, his midnight blue mask glinting in the low light. His stride was confident, predatory, and every now and then, he glanced back, his piercing gaze catching hers like a snare. Despite the bond’s pulsing warnings, Ella’s curiosity overrode her caution. He had promised answers—truths she couldn’t ignore.

They reached a grand door adorned with intricate carvings of entwined roses and thorns. Elias pushed it open with a flourish, revealing a lavish chamber bathed in the soft glow of blood-red candles. The scent of roses filled the air, cloying and oppressive, mingling with an undertone of something metallic. A faint shiver crawled up Ella’s spine as she stepped inside.

“Welcome, Ella,” Elias said smoothly, his voice a velvet caress. He gestured toward a plush chaise draped in dark silk. “Please, make yourself comfortable. I’d rather this conversation not be rushed.”

Ella hesitated, her fingers curling against her sides. “What do you want from me, Elias?”

Elias’s smile was slow and deliberate. “Only to offer you clarity,” he said, his tone almost gentle. “You’ve been surrounded by lies for so long, haven’t you? Suffocated by their expectations, their selfish need for your blood, your bond.”

Her breath hitched at his words. “What are you talking about?”

He moved closer, his steps silent on the thick carpet. “The brothers,” he said, his gaze locking onto hers. “Adrian, Vincent, Sebastian—they see you as their salvation, a tool to uphold their crumbling legacy. Have they told you otherwise? That their devotion is real, untainted by the bond?”

Ella’s heart pounded, the bond fluttering erratically. “They’ve shown me more than you think,” she said, her voice firm despite the doubt gnawing at the edges of her mind.

Elias’s lips curled into a smirk, and he reached out, his gloved hand brushing a strand of hair from her face. The bond surged, sending conflicting sensations through her: warmth and unease, desire and distrust. She stepped back, but the pull of his presence was undeniable.

“You feel it, don’t you?” he murmured. “The bond is a chain, binding you to their will. They would never let you go, even if it meant breaking you.”

“Stop,” Ella said, her voice trembling. “You don’t know anything about us.”

Elias chuckled, the sound low and menacing. “Don’t I?” He gestured toward a small, ornate table in the corner of the room. A stack of papers rested on it, yellowed with age and sealed with the de Vallière crest. “I have proof, Ella. Proof of their secrets, their betrayals. The question is, are you ready to face the truth?”

Ella’s legs felt weak as she stared at the documents. She didn’t move, her mind racing with the implications. The bond pulsed harder, Adrian’s fury and Vincent’s worry mingling with Sebastian’s simmering unease. They knew something was wrong, but they weren’t here.

The ball below had grown louder, the music feverish, the laughter sharp and jagged. Ella could almost feel the wild energy radiating through the walls, a twisted reflection of the storm brewing inside her.

Suddenly, Elias stepped closer, his hands settling lightly on her shoulders. “You don’t have to decide now,” he said, his voice a whisper. “Let me help you, Ella. Let me show you what freedom feels like.”

His fingers trailed down her arms, sending a ripple through the bond. Ella’s breath caught, her body reacting against her will. The bond thrummed with confusion, echoing Vincent’s protectiveness, Adrian’s possessiveness, and Sebastian’s fragmented emotions. She wanted to pull away, but her feet felt rooted to the ground.

“Ella!” The voice was distant at first, muffled by the thick walls, but it grew louder, more desperate. “Ella, where are you?”

Vincent.

Her heart leapt, and the spell Elias had woven began to crack. She stepped back, her eyes wide. “I need to go,” she said, her voice trembling.

Elias’s expression darkened, but he didn’t move to stop her. Instead, he inclined his head, his smile returning, sharper this time. “Of course. But remember, Ella… the truth always has a way of finding its mark.”

She turned and fled, her steps quick and unsteady as she rushed toward the corridor. The sound of her name grew louder, and she followed it like a beacon until she collided with Vincent. His arms wrapped around her immediately, his relief palpable as he pulled her close.

“Ella,” he said, his voice a mixture of anger and fear. “What were you doing? Why did you leave the ballroom?”

“I—” Her voice broke, and she clung to him, the bond surging with his protective fury. “He… Elias was trying to—”

“I know,” Vincent interrupted, his grip tightening. “We need to leave. Now.”

Ella nodded, her heart still racing. As they made their way back toward the ballroom, the sounds of the decadent gathering became more chaotic, the air thick with tension. She glanced back once, catching a glimpse of Elias watching her from the shadows, his mask gleaming like polished obsidian.

His whispered words lingered in her mind, a poison she couldn’t shake: The truth always has a way of finding its mark.
