Bound By Blood

Chapter 96

Ch. 96 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

The air inside the temple thickened as the group moved deeper, every step feeling like a descent into a nightmare. The sigils on the walls pulsed with a rhythmic glow, matching the erratic thrum of the blood bond. Ella could feel it resonating in her chest, its intensity growing with every step closer to the heart of the temple.

"This place is alive," Sebastian murmured, his golden eyes darting around the darkened corridors. "And it doesn’t feel friendly."

Lucien, holding a faintly glowing map, glanced over his shoulder. "The temple’s magic is ancient. It reacts to those who enter, especially ones tied to Aelara’s bloodline."

"It’s reacting to all of us," Vincent said grimly, his hand brushing Ella’s arm protectively. "The bond is feeding it."

Ella said nothing, her focus drawn ahead. The pull toward the temple’s core was magnetic, a force she couldn’t resist even if she wanted to. With each step, her surroundings blurred, and memories that weren’t hers began bleeding into her mind—Aelara’s rise, her rule, her betrayal.

Then, the corridor opened into a vast chamber. The room was circular, its walls lined with mirrors that reflected distorted versions of reality. At the center stood a towering obelisk, its surface covered in glowing runes. As the group entered, the air shifted, heavy with anticipation.

Lucien froze, his eyes narrowing. "This is a trial chamber."

"A trial for what?" Adrian asked, his tone clipped.

"To test worthiness," Lucien replied, his voice grave. "And it doesn’t let anyone leave until the trial is complete."

Before anyone could react, the mirrors around them began to shimmer, their surfaces rippling like water. The bond pulsed violently, and the room dissolved into blinding light.

Adrian blinked as the light faded, finding himself in a vast throne room. It was eerily familiar, yet warped. The air was stifling, heavy with the metallic scent of blood. At the center of the room sat Ella on an obsidian throne, her eyes glowing crimson, her presence radiating an aura of absolute power.

Adrian moved toward her, but chains coiled around his wrists and ankles, dragging him to his knees. A collar of dark iron snapped around his throat, forcing him to bow. The bond felt severed, leaving him hollow.

"Adrian," Ella said, her voice a blend of Aelara’s command and her own warmth. "This is how it must be. You were always meant to kneel."

"No!" Adrian snarled, struggling against the chains. "You are not her!"

Ella tilted her head, a sad smile on her lips. "Am I not? Isn’t this what you fear most? That I will become what the prophecy demands?"

Adrian’s roar echoed through the chamber as he fought the vision, the chains biting into his skin.

Vincent stood alone in the temple’s courtyard, the night sky above fractured and bleeding crimson. He turned, searching for Ella, but what he found made his blood run cold.

She stood at the edge of a fountain, her hands dripping with blood. Her eyes were voids of darkness, and her smile was a chilling mockery of the warmth he knew.

"Ella," he called, his voice trembling. "What have you done?"

She turned slowly, holding a blood-soaked crown in her hands. "This is what I was meant for, Vincent. You knew this. You tried to stop it, but you failed."

"I won’t let this happen," Vincent said, stepping toward her.

"You can’t save me," she whispered, her voice laced with sorrow. "You were never meant to. This darkness is mine, and I have embraced it."

Vincent fell to his knees, the bond writhing in pain as he felt her slip away.

Sebastian found himself in the music room, the familiar sight a stark contrast to the suffocating tension in his chest. Ella stood by the piano, her back to him, her fingers trailing over the keys.

"You’ve always wanted power, haven’t you, Sebastian?" her voice came, soft and cutting.

"I want freedom," he corrected, his voice uneven. "For both of us."

Ella turned, her expression cold and calculating. "Freedom? Or control? Isn’t that what this has always been about? You manipulated me, just as you manipulated everyone else."

"No," Sebastian said, his throat tightening. "I—"

"Admit it," she said, stepping closer. "You don’t care about me. You care about the throne, about being remembered. And now, you’ll have neither."

As she turned away, Sebastian’s reflection in the piano’s glossy surface warped, showing a man consumed by ambition and loneliness.

Ella stood in the heart of the temple, but it wasn’t the temple she had entered. It was Aelara’s, her throne room restored to its former glory. The blood bond was gone, leaving her adrift.

She approached the throne, its surface gleaming with veins of crimson light. As she reached out to touch it, she caught sight of the mirrors lining the room. Each reflected a version of herself: ruling alone, the brothers absent, her power absolute but her heart hollow.

"You were born for this," Aelara’s voice echoed. "You cannot have both. Power or love. Choose."

Ella recoiled, her hand trembling. "I don’t want to rule alone."

"You will," the voice hissed. "That is your legacy."

The visions dissolved into darkness, the bond surging wildly as the group was thrust back into the chamber. Each member staggered, their faces pale, their breathing ragged. The bond transmitted their anguish, their fear, their doubts, until it felt as though the bond itself might snap.

"That wasn’t real," Ella said, her voice shaking but resolute. "None of it was real."

"It felt real," Vincent muttered, his hands clenched into fists. "Too real."

Adrian’s gaze burned as he looked at Ella, his fear barely concealed. "It was real enough to show us what we stand to lose."

Sebastian leaned against the wall, his golden eyes shadowed. "And what we could become."

Lucien stepped forward, his expression tight. "The temple showed us our fears for a reason. It’s testing us. Testing you, Ella."
