Bound By Blood

Chapter 72

Ch. 72 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

The mist hung low over the forest, a silver veil that obscured the path ahead and muted the world around them. The towering trees loomed like ancient sentinels, their gnarled branches reaching out as if to snare the unwary. Ella shivered, pulling her cloak tighter around her shoulders as the damp chill seeped into her bones.

The group moved cautiously, their horses picking their way through the uneven terrain. Vincent rode beside Ella, his presence a steadying anchor in the oppressive atmosphere. They shared a saddle, her body pressed against his as his arm circled her waist, holding her securely. The bond hummed faintly, a comforting pulse in the eerie silence.

“Are you warm enough?” Vincent murmured, his breath brushing against her ear.

Ella nodded, though her cheeks warmed at their proximity. “I’m fine,” she said softly. But the truth was, she wasn’t fine—not with the growing weight of their journey’s purpose pressing down on her. Each step closer to Dr. Cain’s sanctuary felt like stepping into a trap, one she might not escape unscathed.

The others rode ahead, their expressions tense and vigilant. Adrian led the group, his icy-blue eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of danger. His jaw was set, his frustration barely concealed. Behind him, Lucien’s sharp gaze flicked between his map and the path, while Sebastian and Raphael flanked the group, their hands never straying far from their weapons.

The forest seemed endless, the mist growing thicker with every passing hour. Finally, Lucien raised a hand, signaling for them to stop. “We’re close,” he said, his voice barely audible above the rustling leaves. “Cain’s sanctuary should be just beyond that ridge.”

Adrian dismounted, his movements precise as he turned to the group. “Stay together,” he commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. “We don’t know what we’re walking into.”

Ella slid down from the saddle, her legs unsteady as she landed. Vincent was immediately at her side, his hand resting lightly on her arm. “I’ll stay with you,” he said quietly, his dark eyes meeting hers with quiet determination.

They moved as one, climbing the ridge with slow, deliberate steps. When they reached the top, the sight before them stole Ella’s breath.

A sprawling mansion rose from the mist, its dark stone walls covered in twisting vines that seemed to writhe like living things. Blood-red ivy climbed the turrets, and the windows glowed faintly, casting an eerie light into the surrounding fog. The air here was heavier, charged with an unnatural energy that made Ella’s skin prickle.

As they approached the mansion, the massive oak doors creaked open of their own accord. A figure stepped into the doorway, and Ella’s heart skipped a beat.

Dr. Marcus Cain.

She was tall and impossibly elegant, her pale skin framed by a cascade of raven-black hair that fell to her waist. Her crimson gown clung to her form, the fabric shimmering like liquid fire. But it was her hands that drew Ella’s attention—long, slender fingers stained a deep, unsettling red, as though dipped in blood.

Cain’s lips curved into a knowing smile, her piercing gaze sweeping over the group before settling on Ella. “Welcome,” she said, her voice smooth and melodic. “I’ve been expecting you.”

Adrian stepped forward, placing himself protectively in front of Ella. “Dr. Cain,” he said coldly. “We’re here for answers, not games.”

Cain’s smile widened, and she tilted her head as if amused. “Oh, Adrian,” she said, her tone almost teasing. “Always so serious. But I assure you, I don’t play games.”

Her gaze shifted to Ella, and the intensity of it made her want to shrink back. “And you,” Cain murmured, stepping closer. “You’re even more exquisite than I imagined.”

Ella swallowed hard as Cain reached out, her blood-red fingertips brushing against Ella’s wrist. The contact sent a strange, electric sensation through her body, and the bond flared faintly in response. Cain’s fingers trailed along Ella’s pulse points, lingering just a moment too long at her neck.

“Your blood,” Cain whispered, her eyes gleaming with something dark and dangerous. “It sings.”

Adrian’s growl cut through the moment, and he stepped between them, his broad shoulders blocking Cain’s view of Ella. “Keep your hands off her,” he snapped, his magic crackling faintly in the air.

Cain arched an elegant brow, clearly unimpressed by Adrian’s display. “Protective, aren’t we?” she said, her smile turning sharp. “You needn’t worry, Adrian. I have no intention of harming her—quite the opposite, in fact.”

Ella placed a hand on Adrian’s arm, her touch grounding him as the bond pulsed with his barely restrained fury. “It’s okay,” she said softly, though her voice trembled. “Let’s hear what she has to say.”

Cain’s smile softened, though it didn’t reach her eyes. “Very well,” she said, stepping aside and gesturing for them to enter. “Come in. We have much to discuss.”

The group hesitated, their unease palpable. But there was no turning back now. Together, they stepped into the mansion, the heavy doors closing behind them with a finality that sent a shiver down Ella’s spine.
