Bound By Blood

Chapter 78

Ch. 78 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

The weight of the decision sat heavy on Ella’s chest, an unbearable pressure that seemed to grow with each passing moment. The bond pulsed erratically, the brothers’ emotions swirling within her like a storm. Fear, anger, desperation, and something softer—something more fragile—pushed and pulled at her, leaving her breathless.

She paced the length of her room, the shadows of Blackthorn Manor stretching long and ominous around her. Cain’s offer replayed in her mind on an endless loop, her honeyed words a siren song that promised freedom and power. But at what cost?

A sharp knock at her door broke her thoughts. Before she could respond, Adrian stepped inside, his icy-blue eyes ablaze with determination. His presence filled the room, commanding and unyielding.

“Ella,” he began, his voice low but urgent. “You cannot trust her.”

She turned to face him, her arms wrapped around herself defensively. “I don’t trust her, Adrian. But I also don’t know if I can trust myself—or this bond.”

His expression twisted, a flash of pain crossing his features. “This bond may have tied us together, but it doesn’t define how I feel about you. It never has.”

“Then why do I feel like I’m drowning in your emotions?” she snapped, her voice trembling. “Every time the bond flares, I don’t know if what I feel is mine or yours—or hers.”

Adrian closed the distance between them in two long strides, his hands gripping her shoulders firmly. “Don’t do this,” he said, his voice cracking. “Don’t let her manipulate you into thinking this bond is a cage. It’s what keeps us connected. It’s what’s kept you safe.”

Her gray eyes filled with unshed tears as she looked up at him. “And what if I don’t want to be kept safe, Adrian? What if I want to choose for myself?”

His hands tightened, his frustration palpable through the bond. “Then choose me,” he whispered fiercely. “Choose us.”

Before she could respond, Adrian’s lips were on hers, a desperate kiss that spoke of his fear, his need, his love. The bond flared brightly, flooding her with his emotions. She clung to him, her fingers tangling in his dark hair, her own feelings spiraling wildly. When they finally broke apart, their breaths were uneven, their foreheads resting together.

“I can’t lose you,” Adrian murmured, his voice raw. “Not to her, not to anyone.”

Ella pulled back slightly, her gaze searching his. “I need time, Adrian. Please.”

Reluctantly, he stepped away, his jaw tight as he nodded. “But don’t take too long. Her patience has limits.”

The door clicked shut behind him, leaving Ella trembling in the silence.

Later that evening, Vincent found her in the library, her fingers tracing the spines of old tomes as if seeking answers within their worn pages. He approached quietly, his dark eyes soft with concern.

“Ella,” he said, his voice gentle. “You shouldn’t be alone right now.”

She turned, offering a faint, tired smile. “I don’t know what to do, Vincent. Every choice feels like a betrayal.”

He stepped closer, his presence warm and grounding. “Then don’t think of it as a choice between us or her. Think of it as a choice for yourself.”

Her breath hitched as he reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. The bond pulsed faintly, carrying his calm strength to her. “And what if I choose wrong?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“You won’t,” he said simply. “Because whatever you choose, I’ll be there. I’ll support you, Ella, no matter what.”

Tears welled in her eyes, and she stepped into his arms, her face pressing against his chest. His arms wrapped around her, holding her securely as she let out a shaky breath. For a moment, the world quieted, and the bond settled into a steady rhythm, reflecting the quiet devotion he felt for her.

The moment stretched, heavy with unspoken words, until Ella pulled back just enough to look up at him. Their faces were inches apart, and the bond thrummed with a different kind of tension now. Vincent’s hand cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing her skin as his dark eyes searched hers.

“Ella…” he began, his voice low and hesitant, but before he could say more, the sound of distant footsteps echoed down the hall. The spell between them broke, and Vincent stepped back, his expression unreadable.

“We should go,” he said softly. “Cain won’t wait forever.”

In the music room, Sebastian leaned against the grand piano, his golden eyes narrowed as he watched Ella enter. His usual charm was absent, replaced by a seriousness that unsettled her.

“Sebastian?” she asked, stepping closer. “What is it?”

He gestured to a stack of papers on the piano, his jaw tight. “I’ve been digging through Cain’s notes,” he said. “And there’s something she didn’t tell us.”

Ella picked up the papers, her eyes scanning the dense text. “What is this?”

“It’s a contingency plan,” he said darkly. “If the ritual fails—or if you refuse to cooperate—she has another way to use your blood. Something far worse.”

Her stomach dropped. “Worse than what she’s already planning?”

He nodded grimly. “She’s not just trying to sever the bond, Ella. She’s trying to rewrite it. To make it hers.”

The bond pulsed violently at his words, and Ella felt a surge of anger and fear from the brothers, their emotions crashing into her like a wave. She clenched her fists, her resolve hardening.

“I won’t let her control me,” she said firmly.

Sebastian stepped closer, his golden eyes softening. “I know you won’t,” he said, his voice low. “But we need to be ready. No matter what happens, we’ll fight for you.”

Ella met his gaze, her heart pounding as the bond pulsed with unspoken emotion. “Thank you,” she whispered.

Before the moment could deepen, a loud crash echoed through the manor, followed by Cain’s sharp, commanding voice. “Time’s up, child. The choice must be made.”
