Bound By Blood

Chapter 80

Ch. 80 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

The laboratory was eerily silent, the oppressive hum of blood magic dissipated into nothingness. Ella lay on the cold marble floor where Adrian had placed her, her body trembling as the bond pulsed faintly within her. It wasn’t broken, but it had changed—its presence felt raw, unstable, as though it were trying to rebuild itself from the chaos.

Adrian knelt by her side, his icy-blue eyes scanning her pale face with uncharacteristic tenderness. His hands hovered over her, unsure of where to start. Finally, he settled on brushing a damp strand of hair from her forehead, his touch almost reverent.

“You’re safe now,” he murmured, his voice heavy with relief and exhaustion. “It’s over.”

Ella’s lips parted, but her voice came out weak, barely above a whisper. “She’s not gone… not really. I can feel her.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened, but before he could respond, Vincent approached with a flask of warmed blood. “Drink,” he urged softly, kneeling on Ella’s other side. “You need strength.”

Ella hesitated but accepted the flask, the warmth of the liquid chasing away the lingering chill in her veins. Vincent’s steady presence felt like an anchor in the storm of her emotions, his dark eyes watching her intently as she drank.

“Good,” he said, brushing his fingers lightly against her wrist. “That’s good.”

Sebastian’s golden form appeared in the shattered doorway of the laboratory, his shirt torn and his hair disheveled. He sauntered toward them with a forced air of levity, though his eyes betrayed his worry. “Well,” he said, crouching beside Ella, “that was an absolute disaster, wasn’t it? But at least we’re all still breathing… mostly.”

Ella gave a weak laugh, the sound breaking the tension. “You’re incorrigible,” she murmured.

Sebastian’s grin softened as he leaned closer, his golden eyes searching hers. “And you’re impossible to keep safe, darling. But we’ll keep trying anyway.”

Lucien entered next, his expression grim as he clutched a shard of broken glass from Cain’s apparatus. “Cain is gone, but she left this.” He held up the shard, which shimmered faintly with crimson light. “It’s a fragment of her experiment. Whatever she was trying to achieve, it wasn’t complete.”

Ella reached out, her fingers brushing the shard. The contact sent a faint jolt through the bond, and she winced. Adrian was immediately at her side, his protective instincts flaring. “Don’t touch it,” he snapped, his voice sharper than intended.

“She’s part of this,” Lucien said, his tone measured but unyielding. “Her blood, her power—it’s tied to everything Cain wanted. We can’t ignore that.”

“I’m aware,” Adrian growled. “But she’s not a tool to be studied.”

Before the tension could escalate further, Raphael appeared in the doorway, his emerald eyes softening as they fell on Ella. “We need to get her back to Blackthorn,” he said quietly. “She needs rest.”

The brothers exchanged a silent agreement, and together they helped Ella to her feet. Adrian’s arm remained firmly around her waist as they made their way out of the ruined laboratory, his grip as much to steady himself as it was to support her.

The journey back to Blackthorn Manor was somber. The air was thick with unspoken words, the group weighed down by the events of the night. Ella leaned against Adrian during the ride, her exhaustion making her pliant. Vincent rode beside them, his dark gaze never straying far from her, while Sebastian rode ahead, his usual cheer subdued.

When they reached the manor, the brothers wasted no time tending to Ella. Vincent guided her to the parlor, where a roaring fire had been prepared. Adrian fetched a warm blanket, draping it around her shoulders as she sank into the plush couch. Sebastian returned with a steaming cup of tea, his smirk faint but present as he handed it to her.

“You’ll feel better with this,” he said. “Not as effective as blood, but it works wonders for the soul.”

Ella accepted it with a small smile, the warmth of the tea seeping into her fingers. “Thank you,” she said softly, looking at each of them in turn. “For everything.”

The bond thrummed gently, a shared pulse of relief and affection that wrapped around them like an embrace. For a moment, the horrors of the laboratory felt distant, replaced by the comforting presence of those she trusted most.

Later that evening, as the group gathered in the dining room for a quiet meal, the tranquility was shattered by the arrival of a servant carrying a silver tray. Atop it rested an ornate black envelope, the wax seal bearing an unfamiliar crest.

“What’s this?” Adrian asked, his icy gaze narrowing as he took the envelope. He broke the seal with deliberate care, his expression darkening as he read the contents.

“It’s an invitation,” he said finally, his voice tight. “From the Crimson Court.”

The room fell silent. Lucien leaned forward, his brow furrowing. “The Crimson Court? Why would they contact us now?”

“They’re hosting a masquerade ball,” Adrian replied, his tone laced with suspicion. “It’s an opportunity to… reconnect with other clans.”

Ella felt a shiver run through her as Adrian’s words trailed off. The bond pulsed faintly, a warning echoing through its fragile threads. “There’s more, isn’t there?” she asked.

Adrian nodded, his expression grim. “The invitation mentions a guest of honor—a new ally.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened. “Elias.”

The name hung heavy in the air, a reminder that their battles were far from over. Ella’s chest tightened as the weight of the situation settled over her. The Crimson Court’s involvement meant the stakes had risen, and Elias’s presence guaranteed that danger was near.
