Gloria walked home and was thinking about something.
While passing a corner, she was suddenly pulled into an alley by someone.
With no street lights in the alley, it was dark. A few seconds later, Gloria saw several rogues. They surrounded her with baseball bats in their hands.
She became alert and leaned against the wall. "What do you want?"
The rogues looked at each other, laughing and ignoring Gloria's question.
"Do you know me?" Gloria asked calmly and ignored their ridicule.
"You are the eldest daughter of the Carter Group and a rich lady. We certainly know you," one of the rogues said.
"Whoever paid you to come here, I will pay double." Gloria tried to come up with a solution in her mind.
"Miss Carter, you are half crippled. Do you think you can run away? The person who paid us did not intend to kill you. He just asked us to cripple one of your hands." The head of the rogues laughed.
Gloria's mind was a mess.
She grabbed the rubble on the road and smashed them on those rogues. Enduring the pain from her waist and legs, she stood up with difficulty and limped forward.
"Bitch! How dare you!"
Along with the curse, Gloria felt a sharp pain in her scalp and she was dragged back.
Before she could say anything, she was slapped hard on the cheek.
The head of the rogues reached out his hand and restrained Gloria. "I'll grab her. Bill, smash her hand."
Gloria was frightened, her face pale.
At that moment, she seemed to have returned to the werewolf prison.
"Let me go." The calmness in her eyes disappeared in an instant, and she trembled violently in fear.
The rogue who restrained Gloria realized something. His face changed, and he covered Gloria's mouth with his hand.
Bill's stick didn't land on Gloria.
Instead, it landed on someone else's back.
The head of the rogues was pushed into a corner. He looked at the person who appeared out of nowhere in shock. "Who are you?"
Gloria heard a painful groan and raised her head in a daze. Someone held her in his arms tightly. It was Patrick. For a moment, she recalled that a girl had once protected her in prison like this.
Patrick did the same thing as Mica.
"Mica." Gloria's eyes welled up with tears.
"Gloria, I'm here." Patrick's low voice sounded.
The rogue rushed forward and kicked Patrick ruthlessly. "It's none of your business. Get lost."
"No, I won't let you bully Gloria." Patrick held Gloria tightly.
"You asked for it." The rogue lit a cigarette and took a puff.
Every time the baseball bat landed on Patrick's back, Gloria could hear him groan.
For some reason, her heart ached.
A large palm covered the back of her head and pulled her back into his arms. "Gloria. Don't be afraid. I will protect you."
Gloria's heart skipped a beat. A long-gone bitterness gradually filled her heart.
In Patrick's arms, she refused to close her eyes, which were full of tears.
Gloria pushed him hard. Patrick stumbled two steps. "Gloria, don't move."
"It's fine." Gloria reached out and grabbed his arm firmly.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the baseball bat that Bill had dropped on the ground. She crouched down and picked it up, waving it at the rogues.
She did not know if she could hit them or not. She just wanted to fight back.
"I told you to get lost! Can't you hear me?" Her screams were heart-wrenching.
Gloria waved the baseball bats crazily in all directions.
She forgot how long it had been since she resisted others so fiercely and directly.
With the swing of the baseball bat, she felt more and more relieved.
Bill rushed forward and snatched the baseball bat in Gloria's hand. Meanwhile, he was hit several times.
The head of the rogues took the opportunity and intended to attack Gloria's shoulder.
"Don't hit Gloria!"
Something magical happened at this moment.
Regardless of everything, the clumsy Patrick held the rogue's waist and knocked him away.
The others were all knocked to the ground by Patrick.
"Let us go. I promise I won't go after you over this issue. You are so badly injured. Do you think you can leave Gabbs tonight?" Gloria threatened, though her heart was beating fast.
She was taking a risk.
"Miss Carter, you are good. It's our fault, and we are sorry."
The rogues limped away while supporting each other.
After a long time, Gloria shivered and sat weakly on the ground.
"Gloria, you are such a badass," Patrick praised. Gloria felt strange because this was the first time he said something nice about her.
They supported each other and walked home. Gloria opened the door and entered the house.
"Why did you suddenly show up there?" Gloria looked at Patrick sternly.
Patrick pointed to the balcony innocently. "Gloria, when you go to work every day, I will stand there and watch you leave. I will be there when you get off work."
Gloria was stunned. She had all kinds of guesses, but she had never thought of that answer.
So, every day, Patrick would stand on the balcony and watch her leave home and return from work.
For a moment, she didn't know what to say.
Gloria updated Patrick's condition with Stewart, and Mandy knocked on the door.
"Did you find out who leaked the information of the Carter Group?" Gloria asked.
Mandy shook her head with a worried expression.
"Stop the investigation." Gloria pursed her lips.
"Miss Carter, why don't you ask the chief financial officer?" Mandy was puzzled.
"I believe in him. If he leaked the confidential information, he would be sent to jail. And if he did it accidentally, he might not have noticed it. I shouldn't disappoint a senior employee because of it." Gloria frowned and pondered. "Ask the director of the Personnel Department to send the resumes of the staff from the Finance Department to my mailbox."
"You want to check them one by one? It is no different than looking for a needle in a haystack," Mandy said anxiously.
"So, I checked the Finance Department first. Mandy, the Carter Group can't keep such a time bomb."
"If you can't find a suspect in the Finance Department, are you going to check the resumes of everyone in the company? Do you know how many employees there are in the Carter Group?" Mandy did not expect that Gloria would use the stupidest method.
"Forget it. I will do as you said." Mandy knew that Gloria would not go back on her word.
Late at night, Gloria was reading the resumes in the office, which were sent by Mandy.
A resume attracted her attention.
She took out her phone and dialed a number. "Dexter, come to the company."
Dexter did not expect Gloria to make the request late at night. "Now?"
From Dexter's surprised voice, Gloria could tell that he was not willing to come.
She said indifferently, "Now."
Dexter still wanted to argue, yet Gloria hung up the phone directly.
An hour later, Dexter arrived.
Dexter was in his forties. As the chief financial officer of a listed company, he was a successful man in others' eyes.
Although he did not say anything, there was a trace of discontentment on his face.
Gloria noticed it. She stood up and got a cup of coffee for Dexter.
"Look, do you know her?" Gloria turned the laptop to him.
"She is my assistant." Dexter glanced at the resume on the screen.
"Other than that?" Gloria asked.
Dexter stood up from his chair and shouted in exasperation, "Miss Carter, what do you mean?"
"Calm down." Gloria was still sitting behind her desk. She pointed at the photo on the resume and said, "I am not interested in the personal lives of my employees or whether she is just your assistant or not."
Dexter had not figured out why Gloria asked him to come.
"Dexter, how many years have you worked for the Carter Group?"
"Twenty years."
"I just took over the Carter Group, but when my grandfather was alive, we met each other once. You should know more or less about what happened to me. However, you may not know that I know this woman."
"Miss Carter, do you know her?" Dexter was surprised.
"I've worked in Fittro Club. Speaking of which, she was my first roommate after I was released from prison." Gloria mentioned the disgraceful past boldly.
Dexter was not stupid. He realized something and began to feel uneasy.
Seeing his evasive eyes, Gloria did not push him further. "She set me up back then, and then she got into trouble. She thought that we were enemies."
Dexter was even more restless.
Gloria looked at Dexter's struggling expression and was somewhat disappointed.
Just as she was about to argue with Dexter, Dexter raised his head and said in concern, "I didn't know Lillian had done such a thing. I didn't want to harm the Carter Group. She has been working with me for two years and has always been obedient. She works in the Carter Group and is in the same department as me, so I dealt with some work at home. Miss Carter, I didn't know about Lillian's vicious past."
Dexter finally figured out the reason why Gloria had asked him out late at night and who had leaked the confidential information of the Carter Group.
