The Lies That Binds

Into the Shadows

Ch. 81 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The night was thick with tension, the air crisp with the chill of impending danger. Piper walked down the dimly lit street toward the agreed-upon meeting spot with Noah, her heart pounding with each step. The city lights flickered above her like a distant beacon, but they felt far away — too far to offer any real protection. She pulled her coat tighter around her, not just against the cold, but against the anxiety gnawing at her. She didn’t trust Noah, not fully, but she had no choice now. If she wanted to protect Lily and save her business from Marcus Green’s criminal network, she had to play along.

Noah’s plan had sounded solid enough, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something he wasn’t telling her. His past was filled with secrets, half-truths, and betrayal, and now, as he claimed to be her ally, Piper couldn’t help but wonder if this was just another one of his manipulations. Every time she let her guard down, Noah had found a way to make her regret it.

But tonight, Piper wasn’t doing this for Noah. She was doing it for Lily. And for the future she was trying desperately to rebuild.

As she approached the abandoned warehouse at the edge of the industrial district, Piper’s steps slowed. The area was eerily quiet, the only sound the occasional distant hum of traffic. A single light flickered over the entrance of the warehouse, casting long, ominous shadows on the cracked pavement. It was the same warehouse where everything had gone wrong before, where secrets had been uncovered, and where her life had started to spiral out of control.

Noah was already there, leaning against the rusted metal door, his face partially obscured by the hood of his jacket. He straightened when he saw her approach, his expression unreadable in the dim light.

“You’re late,” Noah said, his voice low.

Piper stopped a few feet from him, her arms crossed. “I had a lot to think about. I still don’t know if this is the right move.”

Noah pulled back his hood, revealing dark circles under his eyes, a sign of the sleepless nights he had likely endured while tangled up in this dangerous game. “You have every right to be cautious, but we don’t have time to hesitate. Marcus won’t wait. If we don’t act tonight, he’ll come after you and Lily, and it won’t be a warning — it’ll be the end.”

Piper felt a shiver run down her spine at the thought. She knew how ruthless people like Marcus Green could be. He wouldn’t hesitate to use Lily as leverage if it meant getting what he wanted from Noah. That alone was enough to push her forward, even if every instinct told her to run in the opposite direction.

“Let’s get this over with,” Piper said, her voice steady despite the fear simmering beneath the surface.

Noah nodded, gesturing toward the door. “We’re meeting someone inside. One of Marcus’s men. He’s willing to talk — give us intel — but we need to be smart. If Marcus finds out we’ve been snooping around, we’re dead.”

“Great,” Piper muttered under her breath. “Just what I needed — a death threat to round out the week.”

Noah gave her a quick glance, the corner of his mouth twitching as if he almost found her sarcasm amusing, but his expression quickly sobered. He pushed open the door, the rusted hinges groaning in protest, and they stepped inside the dark, cavernous warehouse.

The space was filled with the musty smell of decay, old crates stacked haphazardly along the walls, and broken machinery that hadn’t been used in years. A single overhead light buzzed weakly above them, casting a pale glow on the cracked concrete floor. Piper’s heart raced as she followed Noah deeper into the shadows, her every sense on high alert.

After a few moments, they reached a small, makeshift office tucked into the far corner of the warehouse. The door was ajar, and inside, a man sat at a rickety table, his face half-hidden in the dim light. He was thin, with hollow cheeks and sharp eyes that darted toward Piper as they entered the room.

Noah stepped forward, his voice low and calm. “This is him, Piper. Marcus’s inside man. He’s agreed to help us.”

The man — whose name Piper hadn’t yet learned — glanced between them warily, his fingers drumming nervously on the table. “I’m risking my life being here, Noah. Marcus doesn’t take kindly to betrayal.”

Piper stepped closer, her voice cold. “Then why are you doing this? What’s in it for you?”

The man hesitated for a moment before responding. “I want out. I’ve been working for Marcus for years, but things are changing. He’s becoming more paranoid, more dangerous. People who cross him disappear, and I don’t intend to be next.”

Piper studied him, trying to gauge if he was telling the truth. His eyes were haunted, his movements jittery, but there was something desperate in his tone that made her believe he was genuinely afraid.

“So what do you have for us?” Noah asked, crossing his arms as he leaned against the doorframe.

The man swallowed hard before pulling out a small USB drive from his jacket pocket and setting it on the table. “This contains information on Marcus’s operations — locations, contacts, dirty money deals. But more importantly, it shows how he’s planning to move against Piper. He’s not just after your business — he’s planning to make an example out of you.”

Piper felt her stomach churn, but she kept her expression neutral. “Why me? Why is he so focused on me?”

“Because you’re the key to controlling Noah,” the man explained, his eyes flicking nervously to Noah. “Marcus thinks if he has you under his thumb, he can manipulate Noah into doing whatever he wants. And Gabriel’s involvement... well, that just complicates things.”

“Gabriel?” Piper’s heart skipped a beat. “What does Gabriel have to do with this?”

The man hesitated, glancing again at Noah, before sighing. “Marcus knows about Gabriel’s history — how he was once part of a rival network, how he’s been trying to bring down Marcus from the inside. Marcus sees Gabriel as a threat, but also as leverage. If Gabriel steps out of line, Marcus will come after him — and he’ll use you to do it.”

Piper’s chest tightened. Gabriel had kept his past hidden from her for so long, and now it seemed like every dark corner of his life was catching up with them. She had known he was involved in dangerous things, but hearing it laid out like this made the danger feel even more real.

“And what about Lily?” Piper asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The man’s expression darkened. “If Marcus can’t get to you, he’ll come for your daughter. He knows how to hurt people where it matters most.”

Piper’s blood ran cold, a surge of protectiveness rising within her. She couldn’t let Marcus — or anyone — get near Lily. She had to end this, and soon.

Noah stepped forward, his jaw tight. “We need to take this information and use it to destroy Marcus’s network before he makes his move. We have the upper hand now, but it won’t last long.”

Piper looked between the two men, her mind racing. She wanted to trust Noah, wanted to believe that he was finally trying to make things right, but there was still a nagging doubt that wouldn’t go away. And Gabriel — where did he fit into all of this? His past, his secrets — they were all catching up with them, and Piper felt trapped in the middle of it all.

She glanced at the USB drive sitting on the table, the weight of what it represented pressing down on her. This could be the key to ending it all, but it could also be the final push that sent her life spiraling out of control.

“What’s the next step?” Piper asked, her voice steady but filled with resolve.

“We take this to the authorities,” Noah said, his eyes locked on hers. “We expose Marcus, dismantle his network, and make sure he can’t hurt anyone else.”

“And if the authorities don’t move fast enough?” Piper pressed. “What if Marcus finds out before we can stop him?”

Noah’s expression hardened. “Then we’ll take matters into our own hands.”

Piper nodded, her mind made up. She was done being a pawn in someone else’s game. She was going to protect Lily, no matter what. And if that meant taking on Marcus Green herself, then so be it.

As they left the warehouse, the weight of what lay ahead settled heavily on Piper’s shoulders. She had distanced herself from Gabriel, from Jasper, from Noah — choosing to stand on her own. But now, as the shadows of Marcus’s network loomed over her, she realized that she might not have the luxury of fighting this battle alone.
