Esmera stood at the edge of Bella’s cage, her gaze cold and triumphant as she surveyed the broken woman inside. The air around them felt thick with tension, the distant howls of Nyxthorn wolves echoing faintly in the background. But here, in the heart of the prison, there was only silence — the kind of silence that pressed in on Bella’s chest, making it hard to breathe.
“Break her,” Esmera commanded, her voice smooth and sharp, a deadly combination that made the guards salivate with anticipation. “Do whatever it takes to destroy her spirit.”
The guards, eager to carry out their orders, smirked at each other, reveling in the opportunity to torment Bella further. They had already brought her to the brink, but Esmera’s cruelty demanded that they push her even lower.
Bella barely registered the guards as they stormed into her cell, dragging her to her feet with rough hands that pulled at her hair, jerking her head back painfully. Her body was weak from days of abuse, and her muscles ached with every movement. But the one thing Bella held onto, the one thing that kept her from completely losing herself, was the stubborn defiance in her heart. They couldn’t take that away from her, not yet.
But with each new blow, each new humiliation, Bella’s spirit began to crack. She had never imagined that things could get this bad. She had been through so much in her life, fought so many battles, but the ones she faced now were different. These attacks were not physical—they were emotional, psychological, the kind that slowly chipped away at the very foundation of her soul.
The guards took turns harassing her, dragging her across the cold stone floor, slapping her, kicking her, and leaving dark bruises in their wake. Bella didn’t fight back anymore. She couldn’t. Every time she tried to stand tall, to hold onto her pride, the guards were there, knocking her down again, forcing her to crawl in the dirt.
Esmera watched with sadistic satisfaction, her eyes glinting as she savored each moment. “You see how weak she is? How pathetic?” she mocked, her voice laced with venom. “This is what happens when you defy me. You end up broken, nothing more than a shadow of your former self.”
Bella could feel her resolve weakening, her thoughts cloudy and unfocused. She had been through so much, but this—this relentless torment, this constant barrage of pain—was slowly draining her. The tears that she had kept hidden for so long threatened to spill, but she refused to let them fall. They wanted her to break. They wanted to see her cry, to beg, to show weakness.
She wouldn’t give them that satisfaction.
But as the hours dragged on, the cruelty intensified. The guards laughed as they continued their assault, each blow feeling like a nail being hammered into the coffin of her dignity. Bella gritted her teeth, holding onto the one thing that kept her tethered to her humanity—the thought of Kael, of the love they shared. She had to hold on for him. She couldn’t give up now.
Her body trembled from the pain, but she clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms until she could feel the blood rise. She wouldn’t scream. She wouldn’t beg. Not for them. Not for Esmera.
But the words Esmera whispered to her pierced deeper than any physical blow.
“You think Kael is coming for you?” Esmera taunted, her voice dripping with mockery. “He’s not coming. He doesn’t even care. He’s probably already forgotten about you.”
The words echoed in Bella’s ears, reverberating through her chest like a cruel rhythm. For the briefest moment, Bella felt the weight of those words settle deep in her heart. Could it be true? Was Kael already moving on, leaving her behind to rot in this hellhole? He had to be fighting for her, didn’t he? He had to be looking for her, trying to find a way to save her.
But Esmera’s words cut through her thoughts like a razor. “He’s probably forgotten all about you,” she repeated, her smile widening with satisfaction.
Bella’s chest tightened, her breath coming in short gasps as the doubt began to seep in. She could feel the pressure building inside her, a storm of emotions threatening to spill over. Her mind screamed at her to hold on, to fight through the pain and the doubt, but a small part of her wondered if Esmera was right. Had Kael truly forgotten about her? Was she really nothing to him anymore?
Her body was weak, her heart heavy with uncertainty. But Bella refused to let Esmera see her break. She clenched her teeth, forcing back the tears that burned behind her eyes. She wouldn’t give her the satisfaction.
With one final shove, the guards threw her back into the cage, the metal bars cold against her bruised skin. Bella crumpled to the ground, her strength completely drained. She lay there for a long time, the darkness of the cage pressing in around her. Her body ached, her mind spun in circles, but through it all, she refused to let herself fall apart.
She had to hold on. She had to believe that Kael was out there, fighting for her, that he would come for her—no matter how long it took.
But as she lay there in the silence, Esmera’s voice rang in her ears once more, her cruel words haunting her.
“He’s probably already forgotten about you.”
