The air crackled with a strange, suffocating energy as Bella stood frozen in the magic circle. Her pulse raced, heart pounding with both fear and fury. She could feel her powers locked away, a weight pressing down on her, suffocating her essence. The magic was too strong, too foreign for her to break through. She wasn’t just trapped physically—her mind was clouded, and her connection to her wolf felt distant, as if she were being torn away from herself.
Esmera’s laughter danced in the air, cold and mocking, as she stood just out of reach, watching Bella struggle.
“You’re stronger than you realize, Bella,” Esmera purred, taking slow, deliberate steps around the perimeter of the glowing circle. “But you’ll never be strong enough to escape me.”
Bella’s breath hitched as she glared at the woman who had tormented her for so long. “What do you want from me, Esmera?”
Esmera’s smile was cruel and calculated. “I want you to understand your place in all of this. You think you can belong to both packs, think you can keep playing both sides. But it’s time to choose. I’ll force you to choose, and you’ll betray them both.”
Bella’s eyes widened, realization dawning. “You want me to destroy the alliance. You want me to tear the packs apart.”
Esmera’s expression darkened, and her voice became venomous. “Exactly. You’re the key to everything. If you fall, both packs will crumble. You’ll be the instrument of their destruction, whether you like it or not.”
Bella’s mind raced. Could Esmera be right? Could she really be the one to destroy everything she’d fought for? The thought sent a wave of nausea through her, but she forced herself to steady her breathing. No matter how powerful Esmera’s magic was, Bella wouldn’t let herself be broken.
But as much as she wanted to fight back, she couldn’t deny the truth that lurked beneath her skin. Every step she took to try to prove her loyalty had only led to more division, more doubts. She had once believed in her purpose, but now… Now, she wasn’t so sure.
Esmera tilted her head, sensing the crack in Bella’s resolve. “You’re not as strong as you think you are, Bella. Not yet.” She raised a hand, and Bella felt a sharp tug at her chest, as if the spell was pulling her very soul. “I will make you see that your family, your love, your allegiance—they’re all nothing more than illusions. You’re destined to be alone, and you will destroy them.”
Before Bella could react, the spell tightened, and everything went black.
Kael was pacing restlessly, his worry for Bella gnawing at him. The bond between them had been silent for too long, and the sense of unease in his chest had only grown stronger. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible was happening to her. He had to find her.
He wasn’t alone. Ardyn stood by his side, just as concerned. “We’ll find her, Kael. Just hold on.”
“I can feel her,” Kael muttered under his breath, closing his eyes. His connection to Bella had always been a powerful thing, a tether that spanned the distance between their hearts. But now it was strained, frayed at the edges, and every thread pulled in a direction that only deepened his panic.
The moment he stepped into the forest, his heart stopped. He could feel her, faint but unmistakable, trapped in something dark. It was the magic that did this, he knew it. Esmera had gotten to her again.
He pushed himself harder, his pulse quickening with every step, but when he arrived at the clearing, there was no sign of Esmera. Only Bella, lying unconscious in the center of a shimmering spell circle.
“Bella!” Kael shouted, rushing to her side.
He knelt beside her, his hands trembling as he gently lifted her into his arms. She was cold, her skin pale, and her breathing shallow. She looked fragile, vulnerable in a way he had never seen her before.
“Bella, come on, wake up. Please,” he murmured, his voice thick with desperation.
She stirred slightly, blinking up at him with a dazed expression. Her eyes were wide, filled with confusion and exhaustion. As she met his gaze, Kael’s heart clenched.
“I’m here,” he said, his voice low and soothing. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you. I promise.”
Bella slowly sat up, her hands trembling as she touched her head, as if trying to gather her scattered thoughts. “Esmera… she…”
“I know,” Kael said, holding her tighter. “She’s gone. You’re safe now.”
But Bella could feel something shifting inside her, a sense of dread settling deep within her chest. Esmera’s words echoed in her mind, too loud to ignore. You’ll destroy them both. The thought made her stomach churn, and for the first time, she wondered if there was truth in what Esmera had said. Could she really be the one to bring the packs to ruin?
Kael noticed the change in her expression and pulled back slightly, searching her face. “Bella, talk to me. What happened?”
She shook her head, her voice barely a whisper. “I—I don’t know. She made me feel like… like I’m the cause of all this. That I’ll tear everything apart.”
Kael’s heart sank at the pain in her voice. “No, Bella. Don’t listen to her. You’re not the one destroying anything. Esmera is the one trying to tear us all apart. You can’t let her get into your head.”
Bella looked at him, her gaze full of uncertainty. “But what if she’s right? What if I’m not meant to be here?”
“No,” Kael insisted, his grip firming around her. “You belong here. You belong with me. You’re our future. Don’t ever doubt that.”
As they sat there, locked in the silence of the night, a sudden rustling interrupted them. A shadow appeared, and from the trees emerged a lone figure— a rogue mercenary, holding a scroll in one hand.
“I bring a message,” the mercenary said, his tone cold. He tossed the scroll toward Kael, who caught it with a grim expression.
The rogue bowed his head. “From Shadowbound’s allies. They say…”
Kael unrolled the parchment and read aloud, his voice heavy with dread. “Bella’s fate will decide your future.”
