Bella stood at the edge of the courtyard, her heart pounding in her chest, each breath shaky and erratic. The letter had been burned, consumed by the fire, but the reality of what had just happened could not be erased so easily. The flickering flames in the hearth hadn’t been enough to cleanse the doubt that now lived between her and Kael. The weight of his mistrust—whether intentional or not—pressed down on her like a stone. She couldn’t escape it.
She had trusted him with her heart, her soul. She had opened herself to him in ways she never had with anyone before. Yet, he had hidden that letter from her. He had doubted her.
And that hurt more than anything.
Kael’s words echoed in her mind, the tenderness in his voice when he said, “I won’t let it tear us apart,” now drowned in the fog of uncertainty. Had he truly believed the accusations? Or had he been keeping secrets from her, too afraid of the truth?
Bella was just about to return to their quarters when she heard footsteps behind her. A familiar presence, smooth and calculating, stepped into view.
“Bella,” Esmera’s voice rang out, warm and falsely comforting. “I thought I might find you here.”
Bella turned, her heart still raw, her eyes red from the silent tears she had shed. She didn’t want to hear any more words, not from her. But Esmera was persistent, always just a step behind, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Esmera took a cautious step closer, her eyes sharp with the same false sympathy she wore like a cloak. “I know you’re upset. It’s understandable. Kael… he’s under pressure from his pack. It’s hard to trust someone when doubts are planted, especially when it comes to you.”
Bella narrowed her eyes, her jaw clenching. She didn’t want to hear this. Not now.
“He doesn’t trust me,” Bella replied coldly, her voice raw. “I saw the letter. I saw it in his belongings. How can I trust him if he can’t trust me?”
Esmera smiled softly, her lips curling in an almost imperceptible way. “It’s not easy, is it? Being in a position where your loyalty is questioned, where everything you’ve done is seen through a lens of suspicion.”
Bella’s heart twisted as she tried to push the hurt away. “I thought we were past all of that,” she muttered bitterly.
“Oh, my dear,” Esmera continued, her voice a dangerous purr, “You’re still so young. So naïve. The truth is, Kael has always had his doubts about you. You can feel it, can’t you? The distance between you, the hesitation. He doesn’t truly trust you the way you deserve.”
Bella’s fists clenched at her sides, a wave of frustration crashing over her. “That’s not true,” she said sharply, her voice trembling with the storm of emotions she was fighting to control. “Kael loves me.”
Esmera chuckled, the sound low and smooth. “Does he? Or does he just want to believe he loves you? The difference is subtle, Bella, but it matters. If you truly want to understand where his heart lies, you need to look beyond what he says and see his actions. Look at what he’s hiding from you.”
Bella recoiled as if slapped. Every word out of Esmera’s mouth was designed to drive a wedge between her and Kael, to plant doubts where none existed. And yet, a part of her couldn’t deny that the seed of uncertainty had already been planted. The letter had opened a door to something darker.
Esmera’s smile widened, sensing her victory. “You deserve someone who trusts you completely. Who doesn’t second-guess your every move. You deserve someone who sees you for who you truly are, without doubt, without hesitation.”
Bella’s stomach churned. She couldn’t afford to let Esmera’s words worm their way deeper, but they were already there, festering. She stepped back, her shoulders tense.
“Enough, Esmera,” she snapped, turning on her heel. “I don’t need your pity. Or your advice.”
Esmera’s laughter followed her as she stormed off, but Bella pushed the sound away, clinging to the remnants of her resolve. She couldn’t let Esmera win. Not now.
As Bella made her way to their quarters, the weight of her confrontation with Esmera lingered like a dark cloud. She barely noticed the flickering of torchlight in the hallway, or the soft whispers of the guards as they bowed to her in passing. Her mind was too consumed with the storm brewing inside her.
When she entered their quarters, she paused at the door. The room felt different—off, as though something had been disturbed. She glanced around, her eyes falling on the table where her medallion usually rested. But it was gone. The table was empty, save for the faintest trace of something out of place.
She stepped forward cautiously, her pulse quickening. The medallion—the symbol of her bloodline, her heritage—was nowhere to be found.
Her breath hitched. Panic crept in, cold and biting. She searched the room, her hands trembling as she rifled through the drawers, through the corners of the room. It was nowhere. But in its place, there was something else. Something new.
At the foot of the bed, lying where her medallion had once been, was a blood-red stone, its surface glinting menacingly in the dim light. It was smooth and cold to the touch, almost as if it had been placed there deliberately. And on it, carved deeply into its surface, was one word:
Traitor.
Bella’s heart dropped, a sickening feeling rising in her stomach. The stone pulsed with a dark energy, its presence heavy with the weight of the message it carried.
Her mind reeled. Who had done this? Who would take her medallion and replace it with this ominous symbol?
She stood frozen for a moment, the stone in her hand as cold as the fear creeping through her veins. Her chest tightened, and her breath came in sharp gasps.
And then, just as she was about to turn and search for answers, a voice sounded from the doorway.
“Bella… what’s going on?”
Kael’s voice, filled with concern, cut through the thick silence. Bella looked up, her heart heavy with betrayal, but all she could do was stare at him.
And then, she whispered, “Someone’s trying to tear us apart.”
