The cold seeped into Bella’s bones, leaving her shivering uncontrollably in the small, unforgiving cage. For days, the guards had left her in this frozen hell, giving her only the barest scraps of food and water, enough to keep her alive but never enough to sustain her. Her body had grown weak, her energy drained, and the once-fierce fire in her heart flickered, struggling against the darkness threatening to swallow her whole.
Esmera’s torment had taken on new forms, each one crueler than the last. The isolation, the deprivation, the constant abuse—it was all meant to break her. The guards were her instruments, eager to carry out their mistress’s orders. They had been told to starve her, to keep her in the cage, and to leave her to rot. And they did so with an unsettling sense of pleasure, making sure Bella knew exactly how powerless she was in their eyes.
Her stomach growled in protest, but she barely noticed the hunger anymore. Her body had learned to adapt, to exist on little more than the smallest bits of sustenance. The cold was far more painful, gnawing at her like a slow poison. Her skin had turned pale, her lips cracked from dehydration. She could feel the chains digging into her wrists, and the bruises from the previous assaults were now a permanent reminder of her captivity.
But even with everything that had happened, Bella refused to give in. She wouldn’t let Esmera win. No matter what, she would survive.
That resolve was put to the test when the guards entered her cage again. Their laughter echoed through the cold, mocking her even as she lay curled on the floor, trying to conserve what little warmth she had left. They grabbed her roughly, their hands cruel and callous as they yanked her to her feet. Bella winced at the sharp pain that shot through her body, but she didn’t scream. She had learned to hold in her pain, to suppress the cries that threatened to break free.
“Look at you, barely even able to stand,” one of the guards sneered, pushing her back into the cold metal bars. “A broken little wolf. You’ll be begging for mercy soon enough.”
Bella’s teeth clenched together, her fists shaking at her sides as they shoved her to the ground. She tried to push herself up, but their boots were quick to stop her, pressing down on her chest, pinning her where she lay.
She struggled, her body weak but her spirit still defiant. The guard laughed cruelly, watching as she tried to resist. “You think you can fight us? You’re nothing. No one cares about you here.”
Her heart hammered in her chest, but she wouldn’t let herself break. She couldn’t. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of seeing her surrender.
Bella’s wolf, once a powerful force within her, was silenced by the suppressive magic, her connection to her inner strength cut off. Without that power, she was nothing more than a mortal woman, vulnerable and fragile in the face of these brutal men. But even in her weakest state, there was a fire deep inside her, something that refused to go out.
One of the guards knelt down beside her, smirking as he looked her over. “Don’t bother fighting. It’s no use. You’re ours now. You’ll never leave this place.”
Bella spat at him, her aim true, though it didn’t faze him in the slightest. His grin only widened. “You’ll regret that.”
And then the real torment began.
With sickening force, the guard pulled her hair back, slamming her head against the cold stone floor. The sound was sickening, a dull thud that sent ripples of pain through Bella’s skull. She gasped for breath, her vision blurring as her head spun.
But she didn’t give them the pleasure of hearing her scream. She clenched her teeth harder, the pain nearly unbearable, but she refused to show weakness. The guards, however, were relentless. They dragged her to her knees, her body screaming for relief, and she felt something inside her begin to unravel, a desperate hunger for escape clawing at her from within.
Another guard kicked her side, and Bella felt the air leave her lungs. Her body sagged under the pressure, the weight of her imprisonment dragging her down further. She gasped, but the words they spoke made her tremble with anger.
“You can’t escape,” one of the guards taunted, his voice cold and mocking. “You’ll be here forever. Nothing can save you now.”
Tears welled in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She wouldn’t cry for them. She wouldn’t let them see her broken.
And then, as if the universe had decided to rub salt in her wounds, she heard the sound of a guard’s voice close to her ear. He was bent down, his breath hot and foul against her skin.
“You’ll scream soon enough,” he whispered, his tone dark and full of promise.
