Kael’s chest tightened as he stood by Bella’s side, her body trembling beneath his touch. He could feel the weight of the ritual pressing down on him, the uncertainty, the desperation in the air. Seraphine had warned them time and time again about the danger of completing the ritual, but there was no turning back now. He couldn’t let Bella slip away, not after everything they had been through.
“Finish it,” Kael growled, his voice thick with urgency. “Do whatever it takes. I don’t care what happens. Just make sure she survives.” His eyes locked onto Seraphine, a fire burning in them. He was willing to sacrifice everything, including his own life, to save her. He would never forgive himself if he failed her.
Seraphine’s gaze remained cold, but there was a flicker of understanding in her eyes. She had seen the lengths Kael was willing to go to for Bella, and though she didn’t show it, a small part of her respected it. “You’re asking me to push her even further, Kael,” she said quietly, her voice full of warning. “Once the final phase of this ritual begins, there’s no going back. Bella’s vampire side will awaken fully, and once it’s unleashed… she may never be the same again.”
“I don’t care,” Kael bit out, his fists clenched at his sides. “I won’t lose her. If she becomes something else, I’ll deal with it. But I won’t watch her die.”
Seraphine’s lips twisted into a bitter smile. “You’re a fool, Alpha,” she muttered. “But you’re also determined. Fine, I’ll finish the ritual. But you need to promise me something.”
Kael frowned, uncertainty flashing in his gaze. “What?”
“Promise me that you’ll protect her, no matter what she becomes,” Seraphine said, her voice steady, though there was an underlying tension to her words. “When this is over, she won’t be the same Bella you knew. She will be changed, and that change might be something you cannot control.”
Kael’s heart clenched at the thought of losing Bella in any way. But he didn’t hesitate. “I promise,” he said firmly, his voice unwavering. “I will protect her, no matter what.”
Seraphine’s expression softened slightly, but only for a moment. Then she turned her attention to Bella, her hands rising once more to begin the final incantation. Kael stayed close to Bella, his hand gripping hers tightly. He could feel the faintest pulse of life still within her, a glimmer of hope that he wasn’t ready to give up on. He wouldn’t let go. Not now.
The air in the room thickened, the power of the ritual growing more intense by the second. Misery, standing to the side with Eryon, watched with a mix of fear and concern. She knew what this ritual could mean for Bella. If they didn’t control it perfectly, Bella might lose herself to the darkness within.
“This is dangerous,” Misery warned, her voice sharp with fear. “If you push her vampire side too far, she could become uncontrollable. The imbalance between her wolf and vampire sides could tear her apart. We don’t know how much more she can take.”
“I know what I’m doing,” Seraphine replied coldly, though her exhaustion was evident. “This is the only way. If we don’t awaken her vampire side fully, the transformation will destroy her from the inside out. It’s the only way to stabilize her hybrid nature.”
Kael glanced at Misery, his gaze hard. “I don’t care. I won’t let her die.”
Misery looked torn, but she nodded, unable to argue further. She had seen the love between them, the bond that was undeniable. She couldn’t deny Kael his chance to save Bella, even if it meant risking everything.
Seraphine’s chant grew louder, her hands moving over Bella’s still form in intricate patterns. Kael kept his focus on Bella, his fingers brushing over her cheek, as if his touch could anchor her, bring her back from the brink.
The room seemed to pulse with energy as Seraphine’s magic took hold. Bella’s body twitched violently, her limbs jerking against the restraints. Her eyes remained closed, but Kael could feel the storm building within her. It was as if the very air around them crackled with the force of her transformation, her two natures warring for dominance.
Kael’s voice trembled as he whispered, “Please, Bella. I’m right here. Don’t leave me.”
But there was no response, no flicker of recognition. Her body continued to fight against the magic, her wolf and vampire instincts at odds with each other. Kael was starting to wonder if this was the right choice. But then, as if in answer to his unspoken fears, Bella’s body stilled for a brief moment.
And then, her eyes snapped open.
Kael froze, his heart stopping in his chest. The familiar golden hue of her eyes was gone, replaced by an unsettling shade of crimson. Her pupils were dilated, her gaze wild, as if she were seeing something—or someone—that wasn’t there. Her lips parted, revealing the glint of sharp fangs.
For a moment, Kael couldn’t move. Then, in an instant, Bella’s hand shot out, gripping Seraphine’s wrist with inhuman strength. Seraphine gasped, her eyes widening in shock as Bella’s grip tightened.
“Enough,” Bella growled, her voice deep and guttural, completely foreign to Kael’s ears. It was a voice laced with power, with something dark and untamable.
Kael’s heart pounded in his chest as he watched, a cold shiver running down his spine. He knew this was coming—he had prepared himself for it, hadn’t he? But seeing it happen, seeing Bella’s transformation before his eyes, was a different kind of terror.
“Bella,” Kael whispered, his voice hoarse with desperation. “Please, come back to me.”
But Bella’s eyes—now fully red—stared at him with an intensity that made him shiver. She wasn’t looking at him as the woman he loved. She wasn’t looking at him as his mate.
