The packhouse was filled with a tense energy, the heavy atmosphere thick as the pack members gathered for the meeting. The elders were seated at the long table, their eyes fixed on Kael, who stood at the front of the room, his jaw clenched and his presence commanding. The usual chatter was replaced with a dead silence, everyone waiting for what Kael was about to announce.
Bella stood off to the side, her heart racing in her chest. She wasn’t sure what had brought her here—what had led her to this moment, standing in front of the entire pack—but she couldn’t deny the anxiety bubbling in her stomach. Kael had insisted she be there, even though she had no idea what he was planning.
“Today,” Kael began, his voice steady, but with a hint of authority that made the room fall even quieter, “I’m making something clear.”
Bella’s breath caught in her throat. The way his eyes flickered toward her made her pulse spike. She wanted to run, to turn and escape, but she stood rooted to the spot.
“I’m claiming Bella as my mate.”
The words hit the room like a thunderclap. A stunned silence followed, and Bella felt every set of eyes on her, each gaze a mix of disbelief, confusion, and—she couldn’t help but notice—disdain.
She tried to keep her composure, but her hands were shaking, her heart thudding in her chest. She’d never expected this, not in a million years. Kael, her protector, the one person who had always seemed to have the answers, was declaring her as his mate.
But why now? Why like this?
The elders exchanged sharp glances, their murmurs low but filled with outrage. “This is absurd,” one of the elders said, his voice gruff. “She’s a rogue, Kael. You can’t just—”
“You cannot make her Luna,” another elder interjected, her voice filled with scorn. “A rogue cannot rule this pack. The very idea is disgraceful.”
Kael’s gaze hardened, his expression unflinching as he faced the elders. “I’m the Alpha,” he said, his voice cutting through the room like a blade. “And I’ve made my decision. Bella is my mate, and as my Luna, she will stand beside me. The pack will accept her, or they’ll leave.”
There was an uncomfortable shift in the room as the pack members looked nervously at one another. Some shifted uncomfortably in their seats, while others avoided looking directly at Bella, clearly unsettled by Kael’s proclamation.
Bella felt like an outsider in that moment, like a stranger in her own skin. She didn’t belong here—at least not in the way the pack wanted her to. They saw her as a rogue, a threat to everything they had built.
“You are making a mistake, Kael,” an elder growled. “Do you truly think we will allow this?”
“We will not stand for it,” another elder hissed, slamming his fist onto the table. “We’ve lived for centuries with tradition, and you would throw that away for a rogue?”
Kael didn’t flinch. His eyes remained locked on the elders, unwavering, filled with a quiet determination that left no room for negotiation. “The decision is final,” he said, his voice leaving no room for argument. “Bella is my mate, and she will be my Luna. You’ll all learn to accept it.”
The room was deathly silent for a moment, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.
And then, with a sharp intake of breath, Esmera stood up from her seat. Her presence was commanding, her posture regal, and the venom in her eyes was undeniable.
“I will not accept this,” Esmera spat, her voice cold with fury. “You cannot make her Luna. She is a rogue, and she is beneath you, Kael.”
Kael turned his gaze on Esmera, his jaw clenching as his body stiffened with the weight of her opposition. “You will respect my decision, Esmera,” he said, his voice low, but there was a hard edge to it that sent a chill down Bella’s spine.
Esmera sneered, her eyes narrowing as she took a step forward. “Respect your decision? You are throwing everything we’ve built away. This is my pack, Kael, and you would be wise to remember that. I will not stand by and watch you destroy it.”
A sharp silence followed, the air thick with tension. Bella felt herself shrinking under the weight of Esmera’s hostility, her heart sinking as she realized the full extent of the opposition they faced.
“I’ll make you regret this,” Esmera hissed, her eyes dark with malice. “You and your rogue mate will never be accepted. You’ll never rule this pack. I will ruin you both.”
Esmera turned sharply on her heel, her steps echoing in the silence of the room as she stormed toward the door. The pack members shifted uneasily, casting nervous glances at one another, but no one dared to speak up.
As Esmera reached the door, she glanced back one last time, her eyes filled with cold fury. “This is my pack. And I will not let you destroy it.”
With that, she slammed the door behind her, leaving the room in an unsettling silence.
Kael stood motionless, his fists clenched at his sides, his gaze darkened with a mix of anger and resolve. Bella could feel the tension crackling in the air, and for a moment, she thought the room might erupt into chaos.
But Kael’s voice cut through the silence, calm but unwavering. “This pack will learn. It will adapt. We are stronger together. And anyone who doesn’t see that will be left behind.”
Bella’s heart beat wildly in her chest. The storm was just beginning, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready for what was coming next.
Esmera storms out: “This is my pack. I’ll make you regret this.”
