The night air felt heavier as Bella made her way deeper into the forest, each step taking her farther from the packhouse, away from the threats that had been circling her like vultures. Her mind raced with the weight of everything Zeryth had said, the growing sense that she was in danger no matter which direction she chose. But running—running had always been her way of coping, and tonight, it felt like the only option.
As she moved between the trees, she heard the crunch of leaves behind her. Bella stopped, instinctively ducking behind a thick oak tree, her heart racing. She waited, listening for any sign of movement, but everything was quiet again—too quiet.
Then, suddenly, the sound of voices reached her ears. Low, hushed whispers that carried with the breeze. Bella tensed, her instincts warning her that something was wrong.
“Found her,” one voice hissed, and Bella’s blood ran cold.
Before she could react, a group of figures emerged from the darkness. Esmera, flanked by several of her followers, stepped forward, a smug smile playing on her lips.
“You’ve been hiding, Bella,” Esmera’s voice cut through the silence like a blade. “And we’ve been looking for you.”
Bella took a step back, her heart pounding. She knew this confrontation wasn’t going to be easy, but she wasn’t about to let them corner her without a fight.
“What do you want, Esmera?” she asked, her voice steady despite the fear curling in her stomach.
Esmera’s eyes gleamed with malicious intent. “You think you can just take what doesn’t belong to you and leave without consequences? You think no one noticed you stealing food from the pack stores?”
Bella’s chest tightened. She hadn’t stolen anything—not that she would admit it to them. She barely had enough food to survive on her own, let alone steal from the pack.
“I didn’t steal anything,” she said firmly, standing her ground. “You’re mistaken.”
The other wolves behind Esmera snickered, circling around her like sharks. Bella’s skin prickled with unease as she glanced from one face to another. Their eyes were full of judgment and contempt.
Esmera stepped forward, her heels clicking on the forest floor. “You’ve always been a burden to this pack, Bella,” she spat. “A rogue in disguise. And now, you’re stealing from us. That’s a crime that can’t be overlooked.”
Bella’s fists clenched, the anger boiling inside her. She could feel the heat of her emotions rising, could sense something deep inside of her stirring. The tremors from before returned, her body humming with energy.
“You’re wrong,” Bella said, her voice barely more than a growl. “I’m not a thief. I’m not a rogue. I belong here just like anyone else.”
A low laugh escaped Esmera’s lips, her eyes gleaming with cruelty. “You belong here?” she echoed, almost mocking. “What a joke. You’ll never be one of us. You don’t even have a wolf. And yet, you think you’re entitled to something.”
At the mention of her lack of a wolf, a fierce rush of emotion surged through Bella, and her vision blurred with rage. She stepped forward, every muscle in her body tense with anticipation.
“Enough,” she said, her voice low and dangerous.
Esmera smirked, sensing an opportunity. “What are you going to do, Bella? Use your ‘powers’ to stop us?”
Before Bella could react, one of Esmera’s followers lunged at her, but Bella was faster. With a sharp twist of her body, she dodged the attack, her foot landing hard in the wolf’s side, sending them crashing to the ground.
The others hesitated, surprised by her strength. Bella didn’t wait for them to regroup. She spun around, delivering a swift kick to another one of Esmera’s followers, knocking him off balance.
The group backed off, eyes wide with shock. They hadn’t expected her to fight back, let alone be so strong. Bella’s pulse pounded in her ears as she stood tall, her body humming with adrenaline.
“You think you can push me around?” she spat, her voice cutting through the silence. “You have no idea who I am.”
Esmera’s smirk faltered, but only for a moment. “You may be stronger than you look, Bella,” she said coldly, “but you’re still nothing. A rogue. A freak.”
Bella gritted her teeth, fists raised. The power inside her thrummed louder, pushing her to the edge. But before she could take another step, a deep growl echoed through the forest.
“Enough.”
The voice was familiar, and it sent a shiver down Bella’s spine. Kael.
She turned to see him emerging from the shadows, his eyes locked on Esmera with a ferocity that made her heart race.
“Kael,” Esmera said, her tone shifting to one of mock sweetness. “What are you doing here? I’m just teaching Bella a lesson.”
Kael’s lips curled into a dangerous smile. “I think it’s you who needs to be taught a lesson, Esmera.”
He stepped forward, his body tense with anger. His eyes were wild, almost predatory, as they fixed on Esmera and her followers.
“You’ll answer to me,” Kael growled, his voice filled with authority and danger.
Esmera’s confident demeanor faltered for the first time. Her followers exchanged nervous glances, uncertain of what Kael’s arrival meant for them.
Kael didn’t look at Bella as he spoke, his gaze never leaving Esmera. But Bella felt a strange sense of relief, knowing that for once, someone—Kael—was standing up for her.
Esmera opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Kael’s growl rumbled again, louder this time, and Esmera stepped back, visibly rattled.
“Go,” Kael ordered, his voice like steel. “Before I make you regret this.”
Without another word, Esmera and her followers quickly retreated, disappearing into the shadows of the forest.
Kael stood still, watching them go, his posture rigid with tension. Bella watched him, her breath still heavy from the confrontation.
She didn’t know what to say, but for the first time in a long while, she didn’t feel so alone.
Kael intervenes, growling at Esmera, “Enough. You’ll answer to me,” his protective side on full display, leaving Bella with mixed feelings of gratitude and confusion.
