Bella stood in the middle of the pack’s training grounds, her heart pounding as the words she had been holding back for so long finally tumbled out of her mouth. She couldn’t keep the questions inside anymore, not when the truth was so painfully out of reach.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she demanded, her voice tight with emotion. “Why didn’t anyone tell me about my parents? About who I really am?” Her fists clenched at her sides, nails digging into her palms as the weight of everything she had learned pressed down on her. “I had to find out from Lira, of all people. From strangers! I deserved to know the truth.”
Kael’s jaw tightened, his eyes flickering with guilt and frustration. He took a step toward her, his presence overwhelming. “I wanted to protect you, Bella. You think I wanted to keep this from you?” His voice was soft but firm. “I had my suspicions about who you were, but I didn’t want to drag you into all of this. You were a rogue, and the past is… dangerous.”
Bella shook her head, a mixture of disbelief and anger boiling inside her. “Dangerous? You think keeping me in the dark was going to protect me?” She took a step back, her voice shaking with emotion. “I’ve been living a lie my entire life, and now you tell me it was to protect me?” Her words hung in the air between them, sharp and heavy. “How could you keep this from me, Kael? How could you?”
Kael’s eyes softened, but the pain in them was unmistakable. He opened his mouth to speak, but Bella cut him off.
“You don’t get to protect me by lying to me,” she whispered, her throat tightening. “I need the truth. I needed it then, and I need it now.”
A silence stretched between them, thick and charged. Kael stepped forward, his hand reaching out, but Bella instinctively pulled back. Her breath came in quick, shallow bursts as she tried to steady herself. “I don’t know if I can trust you anymore,” she murmured, the words stinging as they left her lips. “How do I know what’s real anymore, Kael?”
Kael froze, his hand hovering in the air, just inches from her. His face was a mask of torment as he stood there, unsure of what to do or say. “Bella, please…” he whispered, but she couldn’t bring herself to listen. Not now.
Before he could speak again, Lira’s voice broke through the tension. “Kael,” she said, her tone calm yet firm. “Stop.”
Both Bella and Kael turned to find Lira standing a few feet away, watching them with a keen, almost knowing gaze. Her presence seemed to still the air around them.
“You’re pushing her too hard,” Lira said, her voice low but filled with authority. “If you keep pressing her like this, you’ll lose her. She needs time, Kael. She needs space to process everything. And if you don’t give it to her, you’ll drive her away for good.”
Kael’s shoulders slumped, the weight of Lira’s words sinking in. He looked back at Bella, but there was nothing he could say. He was caught between his fear of losing her and his desire to protect her. But Bella had never asked for his protection. Not like this.
“I just wanted to help,” Kael muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. He ran a hand through his hair in frustration. “But I can’t help if you won’t let me.”
Bella met his gaze, her eyes softening for just a moment. “I don’t need help right now, Kael. I need answers. I need the truth.”
Lira stepped between them, her hand gently resting on Bella’s shoulder. “She’s right. Let her have the space she needs, Kael.” She turned to Bella, her expression more sympathetic now. “You’ll get the answers you seek, but only when you’re ready for them.”
Bella nodded, though a heavy lump remained in her throat. She wasn’t sure when she’d be ready, but the uncertainty was all she had left.
The silence that followed was thick, charged with unspoken words and emotions neither of them were willing to express. Finally, Bella turned away from Kael, her back stiff, her head held high. She needed time to process everything—her parents, her powers, the truth about who she was. She needed to figure out what it all meant for her future.
As Bella walked away, her heart still heavy with confusion, the world around Crescent Howl felt darker. The air seemed thicker, filled with the promise of something looming on the horizon. Bella couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible was coming.
In the shadows of the forest, hidden from view, Esmera crouched low to the ground, her eyes glinting with malevolent satisfaction. She had been watching from a distance, taking in every word exchanged between Kael, Bella, and Lira.
Esmera’s plan was already set in motion, and now she had one more piece of the puzzle to put into place.
Her fingers tightened around the hilt of the dagger hidden at her side, a small, wicked smile creeping across her face. She had been patient, waiting for the perfect moment to strike, and now that moment had arrived.
Esmera’s gaze flickered toward the horizon, where the darkness of the night seemed to gather, waiting for the signal. “It’s time,” she whispered to herself.
She pulled out a small, black stone from her pocket, holding it tightly as she whispered an incantation under her breath. The stone began to glow faintly, pulsing with an eerie, unnatural light.
Moments later, a figure appeared from the shadows. Shadowbound’s warriors, his loyal soldiers, moved silently through the trees, ready to do whatever it took to bring down Crescent Howl. Esmera’s heart raced as she stood tall, her eyes alight with malicious intent.
“The time for secrets is over,” she said, her voice a low, dangerous growl. “We strike now, before Bella becomes too powerful to stop.”
