Danielle and the doctor entered the hospital room and stopped in their tracks to get a good look at me wrapped around my husband like a burrito. I was curled into his arms and his hands were wrapped around me tightly like I had insisted a few minutes before they walked in.
Danielle had a sly smile as she pushed past the doctor and made her way to us. The doctor looked rather amused. He recovered quickly and stepped in properly into the room before shutting the door behind him.
“I can see my plan worked perfectly and you two doofos made up” She squealed and clapped her hands like a little child and it made me scoff.
“I told you she didn’t just go get the doctor,” I told Atticus with a roll of my eyes and he chuckled in response.
“Well, it worked out for the best, didn’t it?” she gave me a roll of her eyes also “So the doctor has your test results and he promises that it is very good news” It was obvious that she was barely trying to contain her excitement and holding herself back from spilling the information herself instead of the doctor.
“That’s more relieving to hear. I feel a lot more at ease” Atticus told Danielle with a smile before shifting a little with me in his arms so he could see the doctor clearly “So doctor, tell us, what was wrong with her because I am surprised that the result of that scare is good news” He spoke to the doctor.
The doctor stepped closer to us with a blinding smile and clasped his hands together with excitement as well “Yes it is good news and I know you both would be so happy to hear it as well”
“I know they will” Danielle interrupted and the doctor sent her a little glare for interrupting him making me and Atticus chuckle at her antics.
She muttered a little sorry and shrunk away from him and moved to stand beside us instead. I just shook my head at her antics before focusing my attention back on the doctor.
“Congratulations Mrs Hayland, you are six weeks pregnant” The doctor broke the good news but I turned ice cold. Atticus had a wide smile but since he was holding me, he felt me tense and the smile dropped from his face while the wrinkles appeared.
I was so fucking ecstatic but my body reacted a bit wrongly. I always have moments where I feel like I want to have my kids but I didn’t think it would happen since it wasn’t something we
were both trying for and that was the reason I was so shocked.
“Oh my God, you are not joking, are you?” I whispered as I slowly regained myself and soon I was smiling so wide, I thought my cheeks were going to tear apart “Oh my God, we are pregnant” This time I turned to my husband and the smile that left his face was back and just as wide as mine.
He grabbed my face and pulled me into a kiss that was all smiles and teeth and it was so awkward and funny at the same time. I could hear Danielle jumping and squealing as if she just heard the news.
“I have to call James” She whipped her phone out of her bag and started calling her husband’s number “I was waiting for the doctor to tell you first before I told anyone. I would also tell the girls about it. Now we also have to start planning your baby shower as well” She kept talking excitedly and wasn’t even giving me a chance to talk.
“Wait” I tried to stop her from making all these exaggerated plans but her husband had picked up the call so she strolled out of the room to give him the supposed good news.
“She is being too dramatic Atty, we have to cage her before she does something drastic” I gasped as I watched the closed door that Danielle just escaped through.
“I think she is right and now we have to make sure you are off your feet as much as possible, I don’t want you going through any kind of stress at all” He pinched my nose and gave it a peck later.
“What do you mean by keeping me off my feet? Doctor, I’m allowed to work aren’t I?”
"Of course you are. You can go on with your regular activities but it is important you know that you should not overdo anything now. The first trimester is usually the most important so you need to know what your limits are and shouldn’t try to exceed them no matter how tempting or urgent it looks” He explained.
“I think I am safe because I don’t overwork myself and now that I have another being in me, I’ll be extra careful” Then I turned to Atticus “And that means you cannot tell me not to go to work”
“But..” He started but I cut him off before he could continue.
“You heard the doctor, I am free to work as long as I don’t overdo it and you know I never overwork myself, I am too lazy to”
“Well, when you put it like that, I can’t deny it. You never really overstress yourself.” Then he turned to speak to the doctor “Thank you, doctor. Can we be on our way now?”
"Yes you can, but she would have to be back to take some tests to ensure everything is fine with her and the baby” He must have seen the worried look on my face because he quickly added “Don’t worry, it's just routine check that we do at the initial stage, it doesn’t mean something is wrong”
We met Danielle outside the hospital but this time she was on a group video call with Sandy,
Ria and Jennifer. Atticus told me it was okay to ride with Danielle back to the house when he noticed that I was so eager to talk to them as well so I gave him a goodbye kiss and we both went our separate ways.
“Oh my gosh, Congratulations baby. I am so freaking happy for you” Ria gushed as soon as we were seated in the car.
“All I can think of is how handsome or beautiful your baby would be. I mean look at you and Atticus, it’s obvious you are going to give birth to a stunning baby.” Sandy gushed as well.
“Oh my god, you are right. I hope your baby has your eyes though. I’ve always envied how clear your eyes are. It’s like the sea when it’s at its calmest and it’s so entrancing to look at.”
The way Jennifer described my eyes made me blush. I have heard countless comments like that but there was something about her tone and the way she said it that made it different from others.
“Stop it, now you’re making me shy” I whined and they all burst out laughing.
“I knew she was going to get shy. She is such a softie.” Sandy laughed.
“Are you guys on your way back already?” Jennifer asked and I couldn’t help but notice that the wall she was standing behind looked oddly like mine.
“Are you in my house, Jen?” I asked while leaning further towards Danielle’s phone to take a close look at it but the phone was taken away
“Jesus, Hazel, did you hurt your head and it affected your vision as well? What would she be doing at your place?” Danielle scoffed and I was a little taken aback by how defensive she looked.
“Why are you acting so suspicious? You all look quite suspicious now” I pointed accusatory fingers at all of them.
“I won’t stay here if I am going to be accused” All I heard was a chorus of Me too and soon I was looking at the blank screen with a video call ended caption on it.
“Did they just hang up?” was still in shock while Dani just started laughing at me.
“Stop laughing at me and tell me, why are they so mean?” I whined but she just pretended to wipe a tear from her eyes and didn’t even reply to me.
“Driver please stop at the bakery, I am craving something sweet,” She told the driver.
“Why are you suddenly craving sweets? You are acting sus”
“You are crazy. Do I need a time to crave sweets?” She asked amused but I just ignored her and faced the other side.
We didn’t take long to get the chocolate cookies she wanted and I even ate from them. I almost made her go back for another box but she promised to get me two boxes tomorrow so I let her be.
Atticus’ car was already in the garage when we arrived and I wasted no time in rushing into the elevator to avoid the cold evening air. Even though I was wearing a hoodie, I still felt a little cold so the heat in the lift was a welcome bonus.
The private lift took us straight to the penthouse and I could not wait to throw myself on my bed and cuddle into my husband’s arms after the long day.
“Surprise” was what welcomed me when I exited the lift and I jumped back in surprise to see everyone there. Well, not everyone I knew but everyone as in Sandy, Ria, Jennifer and even Atticus' sisters. I had to do a double take when I saw them, and they were smiling at me.
“Sister-in-law, congratulations' ' I almost winced at the harshness of Serena's voice. I just stood still and allowed her to pull me into a hug.
“This was just perfect timing. We were already here when your friends came in to decorate. I’m so glad we decided to pay a visit” Emily added before pulling me into a hug just like her sister had done and I returned the hug stiffly.
“Thanks?” I stepped around them carefully before approaching the girls who pulled me into a tight group hug.
“This is the best news I’ve received this year. I am going to be an aunt” Ria pushed everyone aside until it was just two and kissed me on the cheek.
“Thank you guys. When did you even have time to do all these?” I looked around the sparsely but beautifully decorated living space. There was a cute purple banner saying I’m gonna be a mom and it had the cutest stickers on them. There was even a cake that had the design ‘Mom to be’ on it.
“Money makes things happen baby and this was because it was only a matter of minutes. We are having a bigger party” Jennifer declared and there was a chorus of yes throughout the room.
“I’ll go upstairs to tidy and leave you ladies alone,” Atticus said and kissed me before going upstairs.
I was pulled to the couch and sat in the middle as soon as his footsteps faded.
"So, what are we naming the little one?” Danielle asked
“That is way too soon, you fool” Sandy smacked her on her arm and we all laughed at them.
“Tell us, how do you feel babe” Ria asked me with a warm smile.
“Honestly, I am so scared but happy at the same time. It’s not something that was planned but it’s a journey I am willing to take because I have my husband and you girls with me so I know that even when I make so many mistakes or tumble and fall, you will be with me all the step of the way” I told them making sure to make eye contact with each of them so they know how serious I was.
“We will be there for you Hazel, you have nothing to be afraid of and I can promise you that motherhood is one journey you will never regret embarking on” Sandy promised.
I knew I was going to be fine, my problems were far from over but in that moment, it felt like I could do anything and everything because I had people with me who cared and who loved me endlessly and to me, that was all that matters.
