The anger that poured through my veins was hot and boiling and it felt like lava from an active volcano as it burned through my entire being. I started to put the pieces together now aware of why he had tensed up when I said I wouldn’t know anyone here.
He was aware that she would be here and I couldn’t help but also wonder if that was why he was being so sweet to me all day. He was trying to appease me in advance because he knew I would be upset when I finally saw her here today.
I know I had no control over where she went and I could not tell her not to attend the dinner but it would have been nice to get a heads-up so I could be prepared for the emotional trauma I was going through right now.
Okay, maybe I am being a little over dramatic but I had the right to be and besides overreacting seems just right at this moment.
I would have ignored her and pushed my anger down if I had not caught sight of the diamond necklace sitting pretty on her neck. I mean I would not have been angry if it wasn’t the same set I saw when we went shopping for mine.
I didn’t have to be told twice. I knew deep down she had gotten it from him but what I didn’t know was when he got it for her since I didn’t see him talk to the manager of the shop at all, at least in private. Could he have made a call?
“You got it for her” I didn’t need to ask it as a question when I was certain and he knew there was no way he could deny it.
“It was a goodbye gift” I had a hard time believing him and for obvious reasons.
I was trying so hard not to show the anger I was feeling on my face because people had noticed us in the room and were staring at us now or rather the necklace that sat elegantly on my neck.
“Amazing, oh my God, how can you even get prettier than this?” Someone pulled me into a very tight hug before I could see their face but I didn’t need to see their face to know it was Danielle.
“Daniiii, how are you? You look stunning” I squealed as well and I was certain that we would have added jumping to the equation if there weren’t people around.
“I certainly agree with D. You look so beautiful, everyone can’t keep their eyes off you” James spoke behind his wife. He walked up to Atticus and gave him a big hug.
“My man, what’s up” they greeted each other and I tuned out their conversations and focused on Danielle instead.
“Girl, look at this beauty around your neck. I know it costs a fortune. Damn, your man is spoiling you silly” She led me to a table that had some of the ladies from our club.
“I can’t lie and say it didn’t cost a lot. Atticus surprised me by taking me shopping” I told her and we both sat on the empty seats. I won’t be sitting here for the dinner but with Atticus but I needed to catch up with Danielle.
“I’m so jealous. It is the envy of every woman here and we all recognize that necklace. How were you able to snatch it before it was even put up for sale?” Jessica asked and I could hear the envy in her voice.
“That was all my husband” They didn’t have to know the entire truth. Someone scoffed and I didn’t have to look in that direction to know it was Samantha.
“Don’t mind anyone darling, the most important thing is that you are the brightest star here today” Danielle scornfully said and I sent her a small smile showing my appreciation.
“I would like to have a word with you" I almost jumped out of my skin when I suddenly heard Samantha’s voice behind me instead of across the table.
“Whatever you have to say to her, you can say it here, I don’t mind at all and I’m sure she won't either” Danielle scoffed
“And I’m sure she doesn’t need you to play the knight in shining armour” she also spat back at Danielle before turning to me “I won’t take much of your time, I just need to tell you something”
I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like whatever she had to tell me but I decided to go with her, I didn’t want her to think I was scared of her so I got up to follow her but Danielle grabbed me and prevented me from moving.
“What are you doing? You don’t have to go with her” She argued but I shook my head in disagreement
“Don’t worry Dani, I’ll be fine” to Samantha, I spoke “Let’s go” She just gave me a long look before she turned and walked away while I followed behind her.
I caught Atticus' curious or worried gaze from where he was talking with some people. He was using his eyes to ask me where I was going with her but I ignored him and followed Samantha out of the hall and onto the balcony.
The view from out here was incredible. You could almost see the lights from the city from up here but now is not the time to admire the night view.
I turned to look at Samantha who already had her arms folded and a scowl on her face that made her look old and ugly.
“You think you have won, right? Because he got you a super expensive necklace and also ended what we have?” So, he was serious about ending things with Samantha? Now I understood why she was so angry to see him with me.
“Why do you think I was the one who told him to stop seeing you? Did you ask him if he got tired of you and your ugly behaviour?” I asked her in reply.
“He clearly said his wife was uncomfortable with our relationship so he wants to call it quits.
What do you have that would make him leave me? Do you know how long we have been together? How dare you try to take him away from me?” At this point, she was practically yelling and she had a crazed look in her eyes.
I stepped away from her a little because she was really mad and I wouldn’t be surprised if she raised her hands to hit me, not that she would leave without a scarred face but I had to take precautions.
“I keep telling you this a thousand times and I would say it for the last time, I don’t care how long you’ve known him or have the relationship you have, I am his wife now and I refuse to share my husband with anyone. You should get that into your thick skull”
“You have some nerves though, you know? To think you can get away with taking him away from me?”
“Are you threatening me right now?” I asked her in annoyance, she was starting to irritate me.
“Threat? I am not threatening you, I am simply telling you what I feel and what I would do.
You better watch your back Hazel'' she stormed off and I was left standing there with a bad feeling in my stomach and a sour taste in my mouth.
“She is fucking crazy” I whispered to myself and let myself lean against the balcony. I needed to catch my breath before going back in.
“Are you okay?” I jumped in surprise. I kept getting startled by people this night
“Mhmmm, I am fine. What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be mingling inside’ He smiled at my choice of words and then came to stand beside me.
“I came to check up on you”
“Or you came to hear what your mistress had to say to me” I scoffed in annoyance. I was still angry and he knew I was.
“I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you. I know you would have been upset but I promise I’ve cut off all ties with her”
“I know” I sighed “She told me everything and I can tell you that she isn’t happy about it”
“What did she say to you?” He asked me and for the first time, I saw concern laced his features.
“She just said to watch my back but I can’t take her seriously, I know she is just angry,” I told him.
“Are you sure you are okay?” this time, he came to stand in front of me and took my hand in his.
“Of course, I am” I reached up to kiss him on the cheeks. “Let’s go inside, you haven’t introduced me to anyone yet” I told him. I pulled him back in so that we could enjoy the dinner. I would worry about her baseless threats later.
