Tabitha's POV
"Tabitha, don't overthink it. Just hold on a little longer. Alpha Derek will be here soon. This is our mission. No matter what happens, we will protect you!"
"Thank you, Dr. Evans. I really appreciate your care over the past few months."
Alice appeared very uneasy after hearing my words.
"Tabitha, don't give up. We will get out. I promise."
"Get out? Where can we possibly go?"
I looked up at the dark sky, and the cold rain mercilessly pattered on my face.
"Actually, I know that my dad can't live much longer. He lives until now thanks to instruments and medication. He has long lost the will to live."
"Tabitha..."
"Dr. Evans, my friend used to say that I was like the sun, shining in brightness. But later, the light on me gradually faded, and I was enveloped by darkness. I walked a long time in the mud.
"Back then, I rolled and crawled, struggling desperately. I refused to give up and didn't believe in fate. Even a faint glimmer of light in my life would be dearly cherished by me.
"I held that beam of light so carefully and regained hope for life. However, in the end, I lost everything. If I had nothing, it would be fine, but why did they have to hurt even the people closest to me?"
"Tabitha, it isn't your fault. The culprit is to blame."
I had already immersed myself in my thoughts.
"No, it's my fault. I am the jinx that caused harm to them. If it weren't for me, they wouldn't have died. Anyone who gets close to me becomes miserable. Dr. Evans, I don't want to burden you anymore. Please let me go."
Alice looked serious and said, "Tabitha, what nonsense are you talking about? How could we possibly give up on you? Even if I had only one breath left, I would still protect you."
"Why? You are also your parents' pride and joy. Anyway, I won't live long, but you still have a beautiful life ahead of you."
I struggled to get off Alice's back, barely managing to stand up straight. I shouted loudly at the black-clad men chasing after me, "You just want me dead, right? Fine, take my life. Just stop hurting others."
Spencer had already fallen down. At this moment, any bullet could have taken his life.
Even so, he did not give up. "Tabitha, you can't."
The leader of the black-clad men stepped directly on Spencer's chest and said, "Ms. Hartley, it's great that you can think so. Our target is you.
"As long as you die, we won't have to harm anyone else, and we can complete the mission. Win-win."
"Before I die, I want to know who exactly wants to kill me."
"Sorry, even if we knew the employer's information, we wouldn't be able to disclose it.
"Ms. Hartley, go on. If you kill yourself, I can grant you a decent death and spare them. You should know that this time, to kill you, I've lost quite a few of my men."
Alice quickly grabbed my hand and said, "Tabitha, don't even think about doing anything foolish. Don't give up until the very last moment. You have to stay alive. You must stay alive."
I stared profoundly at Alice. She was only thirty years old and still unmarried.
She deserved a better future and shouldn't sacrifice herself for me.
"Dr. Evans, when I die, you must live well. If you have children in the future, bring them to my tomb."
"Tabitha..." Alice wanted to say something more, but I interrupted her.
"Do you know what the most painful thing is? Being a mother and not being able to protect any of your children in the end.
"If I had known this earlier, why would I have gone through the hardship of conceiving them? I've brought my babies to the world but I can't let them see the world. I'm a sinner, an unforgivable sinner.
"Now I should go and accompany them. They were so little. They must be scared."
After saying that, I broke free from Alice's grasp and leaped towards the sea.
In the howling wind, I seemed to hear a heart-wrenching growl, "Tabitha!"
"Goodbye, Derek. End of our relationship in this life," I thought.
The moment my body plunged into the sea, I felt at peace.
I let myself sink into the water without any struggle.
"Babies, Mommy is coming for you. Wait for me, please.
"I'll stay by your side. We will never be separated again, OK?" I thought to myself.
