The Lies That Binds

Erosion of Boundaries

Ch. 39 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The encounter with Noah lingered in Piper’s mind long after he drove away. His smug expression, his veiled threats — it was all too familiar. Noah didn’t just want Lily; he wanted control, not just of their daughter, but of her. He had always thrived on power dynamics, and now that Piper had wrestled free from his grasp, he was more dangerous than ever.

But this time was different. Piper wasn’t the same woman Noah had once manipulated, and she wasn’t standing alone. Gabriel’s presence at her side had reminded her of that. But even with Gabriel, uncertainty clouded everything.

It was late by the time they returned inside, the tension from Noah’s visit hanging like smoke in the air. Piper paced the living room, her arms folded tightly, while Gabriel leaned against the wall, watching her with quiet concern.

“You okay?” he asked softly.

Piper exhaled sharply. “No. I’m not okay.” She stopped pacing and faced him. “I hate that he can still do this — show up unannounced, disrupt everything, and make me feel...”

“Powerless,” Gabriel finished for her.

Piper nodded, biting her lip. “Yes. Exactly.”

Gabriel stepped closer, his gaze steady and unwavering. “You’re not powerless, Piper. Not anymore. He’s losing control, and he knows it.”

“Then why does it feel like he’s winning?” Piper whispered.

Gabriel’s expression softened. “Because people like Noah play the long game. They dig under your skin and make you doubt yourself. But he’s only winning if you let him.”

Piper closed her eyes, exhaling slowly. “I’m just... tired, Gabriel. Tired of fighting. Tired of being afraid.”

Gabriel hesitated for only a moment before taking her hand, his touch gentle but firm. “You’re not alone in this,” he said quietly. “You don’t have to do this by yourself.”

Piper’s heart fluttered at the warmth in his voice. It had been so long since anyone had offered her that kind of support — without conditions, without expectations.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Gabriel gave her a small, reassuring smile. “Anytime.”

For a moment, they stood there, the space between them charged with something electric — something neither of them dared name. Piper knew she was crossing into dangerous territory, but she couldn’t seem to stop herself. She was tired of holding back, tired of second-guessing everything she felt.

Without thinking, she took a step closer to Gabriel, her pulse quickening. He didn’t move away.

His gaze darkened slightly, but he held himself steady, as if waiting for her to decide what came next. Piper’s breath hitched, her heart pounding in her chest.

What am I doing?

And then, as if drawn by a force she couldn’t resist, Piper leaned in — just enough for her shoulder to brush against his.

Gabriel’s breath was warm against her skin, and for a fleeting moment, Piper let herself imagine what it would be like to kiss him. To let go of everything — her doubts, her fears — and just feel.

But before she could act on the impulse, the soft creak of the stairs startled them both.

“Mommy?” Lily’s small voice called from the hallway, rubbing her eyes sleepily. “I had a bad dream.”

Piper stepped back, her heart racing as the spell between her and Gabriel shattered. “I’ll be right there, sweetie,” she called, her voice steadier than she felt.

Gabriel gave her a knowing look — one that said they both understood how close they had come to crossing a line. He didn’t say anything, though. Instead, he gave her a small, reassuring nod.

“I’ll head out,” he whispered. “You’ve got this.”

Piper nodded, grateful for the way Gabriel always seemed to know when to give her space. “Thank you. For everything.”

Gabriel smiled, a soft, fleeting thing that made her heart ache in ways she didn’t fully understand. And just like that, he was gone — slipping into the night like a shadow, leaving Piper standing alone in the quiet aftermath.

After tucking Lily back into bed, Piper sat on the edge of her daughter’s mattress, smoothing the curls from her forehead as Lily drifted back to sleep.

Her mind raced, torn between the mess of emotions Gabriel stirred within her and the ever-present weight of Noah’s looming threat. It felt like every step forward only led to new complications, new dangers.

And then there was Jasper.

Piper couldn’t ignore the part of her heart that still belonged to him, no matter how much she tried. Their shared history was woven into the fabric of her life, tangled up in memories and regrets. And though they had both changed — grown apart in so many ways — there was still a bond between them that she couldn’t sever.

But what did that mean now? With Isabel in Jasper’s life and Gabriel becoming something more than just a friend, Piper felt like she was walking a tightrope, unsure which way to fall.

The next morning, Piper woke early, determined to regain control of her life. She couldn’t keep living in limbo, torn between the past and the future. It was time to make some decisions — and to confront the mess Noah had created.

Amanda had called the previous evening, letting Piper know that the judge was reviewing the latest custody filings, including the evidence Gabriel had uncovered. They had made progress, but the battle was far from over.

As she sat at the kitchen table, sipping her coffee, Piper’s phone buzzed with a text.

Jasper: Can we meet today? There’s something I need to tell you.

Piper’s heart skipped a beat.

What now?

For a moment, she considered ignoring the message. But that wasn’t an option — not with everything hanging in the balance.

Piper: Where?

Jasper’s reply came quickly.

Jasper: The park. Noon.

When Piper arrived at the park, Jasper was already there, sitting on a bench beneath the oak trees. He looked tired — his usual confidence worn down by the weight of everything they had been through.

“Thanks for coming,” Jasper said as Piper approached.

“What’s this about?” Piper asked, folding her arms.

Jasper hesitated, running a hand through his hair. “It’s about Noah. And... something I found out.”

Piper’s stomach twisted. “What do you mean?”

Jasper exhaled slowly, as if the words were heavy in his throat. “Noah’s been hiding something. Something about Lily.”

Piper’s pulse quickened. “What are you talking about, Jasper? Just tell me.”

Jasper met her gaze, his expression serious. “I think Noah knew — before any of us did — that Lily wasn’t his.”

Piper felt the ground shift beneath her, her heart racing. “What?”

“I don’t know how, or for how long,” Jasper continued, “but I found some emails. Noah had doubts about Lily’s paternity from the start. He never said anything — never challenged it — but he knew.”

Piper’s breath caught in her throat, a wave of betrayal crashing over her.

All this time...

“He used it against us,” she whispered, the truth hitting her like a punch to the gut. “He used it to keep control. To manipulate me.”

Jasper nodded, his expression filled with quiet anger. “And now that he’s losing control, he’s getting desperate.”

Piper sank onto the bench, her mind reeling. The betrayal was worse than anything she had imagined — not just because of what Noah had done, but because of what it meant for Lily. Piper clenched her fists, a surge of determination flooding her. “We end this. Now.”
