The Lies That Binds

The Trap Tightens

Ch. 50 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The sound of the car doors slamming shut echoed through the abandoned warehouse, a haunting reverberation that sent a chill down Piper’s spine. She stood frozen, her heart pounding, as the two men approached with slow, deliberate steps. There was something unsettling about the way they moved, as if they had done this a hundred times before.

Noah, who had been standing with his usual smugness, shifted slightly. Piper could see it now — the flash of fear in his eyes that he had been trying to hide. He might have been in control at one point, but it was clear that this situation had spiraled far beyond his reach.

"Who are they?" Piper whispered, her voice trembling despite her attempt to stay calm.

Noah didn’t answer right away. He kept his eyes on the two men, his jaw clenched. “They’re here for me,” he said quietly, almost as if he were trying to convince himself more than her. “You don’t need to worry.”

But Piper was worried. The cold air around them felt thick with danger, and every instinct in her body screamed at her to run. But she couldn’t — not without knowing what she and Lily were up against. And now that these men were here, it felt as though the noose around her was tightening, and there was no escape.

The two men reached them, their faces unreadable. One of them, tall and broad-shouldered with a scar running down the side of his face, glanced at Piper for only a moment before turning his attention to Noah.

“Noah McAllister,” the man said in a low, gravelly voice. “You’ve been hard to find.”

Noah stiffened, his usual arrogance faltering as he met the man’s gaze. “You found me. Now what?”

The scarred man smiled, but there was no humor in it. “You owe us. You’ve been dodging your debt for too long, and now we’re collecting.”

Piper’s breath caught in her throat. Debt? What kind of debt could Noah possibly owe these men? She had known that his past was shady, but this was far beyond anything she had imagined.

“I don’t have what you want,” Noah said, his voice tense.

The second man, shorter but with a cold, calculating look in his eyes, stepped forward. “That’s a shame,” he said, his tone icy. “Because if you don’t have what we want, then we’ll take something else.”

Piper’s stomach twisted. She felt as though she were teetering on the edge of a precipice, and whatever came next would send her crashing down into an abyss she couldn’t climb out of. She glanced at Noah, hoping for some kind of explanation, but he looked as lost as she felt.

The scarred man’s eyes flicked to Piper, and a slow, deliberate smile spread across his face. “Maybe we’ll start with her.”

Noah stepped in front of her, his voice rising with panic. “No. She’s got nothing to do with this. This is between us.”

The man’s smile widened. “That’s not how this works, Noah. You didn’t think your mess would stay confined to just you, did you? Everyone you care about — everyone you’ve touched — they’re part of this now.”

Piper’s heart raced. She could barely process what was happening. She had come here expecting a confrontation with Noah, expecting to demand answers about the threats she had been receiving. But now, the danger was right in front of her, and it was far worse than she could have anticipated.

“I don’t care what your issue is with Noah,” Piper said, her voice shaking but determined. “I’m not involved in this.”

The second man’s cold gaze turned to her, and for a moment, Piper wished she hadn’t spoken. “Oh, you’re involved,” he said. “Noah made sure of that when he dragged you into his mess.”

Noah’s face twisted in anger. “Leave her out of this!”

The scarred man ignored him, taking a step closer to Piper. “You want to stay out of it? Then maybe you should convince your boyfriend here to settle up.”

Piper felt her breath catch in her throat. There was something menacing in the way the man spoke, like he enjoyed the power he held over them. She had faced threats before — Noah’s manipulation, the custody battle — but this was different. This was a level of danger she hadn’t anticipated. And now she realized that Noah had put her directly in harm’s way.

“Noah,” Piper whispered urgently, her voice barely above a breath, “what are they talking about? What did you do?”

Noah’s face darkened, and he finally turned to face her. “It’s... complicated.”

The scarred man laughed. “Complicated, he says. That’s one way to put it.”

Piper’s mind raced, her thoughts spinning in a hundred different directions. She felt like she was sinking into quicksand, every revelation pulling her deeper. She had to get out of this. She had to find a way to protect herself — and Lily. But how could she when she didn’t even know the full extent of what she was up against?

The second man stepped forward again, his eyes fixed on Noah. “Enough stalling. You either pay what you owe, or we take something else. And trust me — you won’t like what we take.”

Noah clenched his fists, his eyes narrowing. “You don’t touch her. You don’t touch my daughter.”

Piper’s blood turned to ice. Lily. Of course, they would go after Lily. Her heart pounded in her chest as the reality of the situation crashed over her. Noah had dragged her and Lily into this, and now their lives were on the line.

The scarred man raised an eyebrow. “Your daughter? Interesting. Maybe that’s what we’ll take.”

Piper’s world tilted. The ground beneath her feet felt unstable, as if she were standing on the edge of a cliff, and one wrong move would send her plunging into darkness. She couldn’t let them take Lily. She couldn’t let Noah’s mistakes destroy their lives.

Before she could respond, Noah stepped forward, his face hard with determination. “You’re not going near her.”

The second man sneered. “You don’t get to make demands here, Noah. You lost that right when you started running.”

Noah looked at Piper, his eyes filled with an emotion she couldn’t quite place — regret, maybe. Or desperation. “Get out of here, Piper,” he said, his voice low. “Take Lily and go. Now.”

Piper shook her head, her mind spinning. “What? No, I’m not leaving you —”

“You don’t understand,” Noah snapped. “They’ll come after her next. You need to go now.”

The scarred man chuckled darkly. “He’s right, you know. If you don’t leave, we’ll make sure this ends badly for all of you.”

Piper’s pulse raced. She knew she had to make a choice, and fast. But every instinct in her body screamed at her to fight, to find a way out of this that didn’t involve abandoning Noah to these men. But she also knew that staying here could make things worse. If Lily was in danger, she couldn’t afford to hesitate.

With one last look at Noah, who was staring her down with a mixture of urgency and resignation, Piper turned and bolted toward her car. Her legs felt weak, her breath coming in sharp bursts as she ran. Every step felt like a betrayal, like she was leaving behind more than just Noah — but her survival instinct overrode everything else.

She jumped into the driver’s seat and sped out of the lot, her hands trembling as they gripped the steering wheel. Her thoughts raced ahead of her as she tried to process everything that had just happened.

Noah had gotten himself tangled with criminals, and now she and Lily were targets because of him. The threats weren’t just empty words — they were real, and they were coming for her. She couldn’t afford to sit back and wait any longer. She had to protect Lily. She had to get ahead of whatever was coming.

But where could she go? Who could she trust?

Gabriel’s face flashed in her mind. He had been by her side through everything, but after what Jasper had said about not knowing everything about Gabriel’s past, doubt lingered.

Noah’s right about one thing, she thought, her heart pounding. Lily comes first.

With that thought, she made a decision. She needed to get Lily, get somewhere safe, and figure out what to do next. And she couldn’t trust anyone — not even Gabriel — until she knew who was truly on her side.

Piper pulled into the school parking lot, her pulse quickening as she rushed inside to get Lily. She couldn’t shake the feeling that time was running out, that the threat was closing in around them. She just needed to get Lily, and then they could disappear. Find somewhere safe until they figured out their next move.

But as she approached the school office, her phone buzzed in her pocket. Piper pulled it out, her breath catching in her throat as she read the new message.

Unknown: You’re too late. We’re already watching.

Panic surged through her. She ran faster, her eyes scanning the hallway for any sign of danger.

Please let Lily be safe. Please let me get there in time.

As she rounded the corner toward Lily’s classroom, her heart stopped.

The door was wide open.

And Lily was gone.
