The Lies That Binds

Torn at the Seams

Ch. 62 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper had never felt more emotionally drained. The delicate balance she had been trying to maintain was unraveling faster than she could handle. The constant tug-of-war between Gabriel and Jasper had worn her down to the bone, and now Noah’s unexpected reentry into her life was only making things worse. Every step forward felt like two steps back, and she was tired — so tired — of feeling like she was caught in the middle of everyone else’s battles.

Sitting in the living room, Piper stared out the window, the sun’s light casting long shadows across the floor. Lily was at school, and for the first time in what felt like weeks, the house was quiet. Too quiet. The silence left too much space for her thoughts to spiral.

Gabriel had been there for her, steady as always. His calm, unwavering support had kept her grounded through the legal battle, through the terror of Moreno, and through the constant stress of dealing with Noah. She couldn’t deny that his presence made her feel safe in ways she hadn’t felt in a long time. He was dependable, strong, and had been by her side when everything felt like it was falling apart. She knew she could rely on him.

But then there was Jasper.

She sighed, rubbing her temples as she tried to make sense of her tangled feelings. She hadn’t meant for things to become so complicated between her and Jasper, especially not after everything that had happened between them. He was Lily’s father, and they had shared so much history — good and bad. Piper couldn’t help the way her heart still fluttered when he was near, the way her mind drifted back to memories of them laughing, holding each other, feeling like the world made sense.

But that had been years ago. Since then, things had fallen apart. They had been pulled in different directions, and despite her love for him, their relationship had cracked under the weight of lies and distance. Yet, even now, the feelings lingered, like embers of a fire that hadn’t quite gone out.

Piper sighed again, frustrated with herself for even entertaining the thought. She wasn’t the same person she had been when she and Jasper were together. And now, with Gabriel in her life, it felt wrong to keep holding on to those feelings. But letting go wasn’t easy.

The knock on the door startled her from her thoughts. Piper stood, her heart leaping into her throat as she moved to the door, half-expecting Noah to be standing on the other side. But when she opened it, it was Gabriel.

His presence was like a balm to her frayed nerves. He stood there, a small smile on his face, though she could see the concern in his eyes. He always seemed to know when she needed him, when the weight of everything was too much for her to carry alone.

“Hey,” Gabriel said softly, stepping inside. “I wanted to check on you. Thought maybe we could talk.”

Piper nodded, closing the door behind him. “I’m glad you’re here.”

They sat together on the couch, the silence between them comfortable but heavy with unspoken words. Gabriel’s eyes searched hers, and Piper could feel the question hanging in the air. He didn’t have to say it — she knew what he was asking. What are we doing? Where do we stand?

Gabriel had never pressured her, never pushed for more than she was ready to give, but Piper could feel the weight of his patience. She could feel his desire for something more, something deeper. And as much as she wanted to let herself fall into the safety of his arms, she couldn’t ignore the confusion gnawing at her.

“I’ve been thinking a lot lately,” Piper began, her voice barely above a whisper. “About us. About everything.”

Gabriel’s expression softened, and he reached out, gently taking her hand in his. “I’m listening.”

Piper’s heart twisted at the tenderness in his touch, the way he always seemed to know what she needed without her even having to say it. “I don’t want to hurt you, Gabriel. You’ve been so amazing, and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I appreciate everything you’ve done for me and Lily. But...”

Gabriel’s grip tightened slightly, but he didn’t interrupt. He simply waited, his eyes filled with understanding and something deeper — something that made it even harder for Piper to speak.

“I’m still trying to figure things out,” Piper continued, her voice trembling with emotion. “I don’t know what I’m feeling anymore. Between everything with Noah and Jasper... I just... I feel like I’m being pulled in so many directions, and I don’t know how to deal with it.”

Gabriel nodded, his thumb brushing gently over the back of her hand. “I understand, Piper. I know things have been complicated, and I don’t want to add to that. But I need you to know something.”

Piper’s heart skipped a beat as she looked up at him, her breath catching in her throat.

“I’m here for you,” Gabriel said, his voice low and steady. “I’m not going anywhere. But I also don’t want to be something that holds you back or makes things harder for you. Whatever you need, whatever you decide... I’ll respect it.”

Tears welled in Piper’s eyes, the kindness in his words nearly breaking her. Gabriel had always been patient, always understanding, and she knew that he meant every word. But that didn’t make her decision any easier. Because no matter how much she cared for him, no matter how much she appreciated his support, she couldn’t ignore the unresolved feelings she still had for Jasper.

“Thank you,” Piper whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “I don’t deserve how good you’ve been to me.”

Gabriel smiled softly, his hand gently cupping her cheek. “You deserve more than you think.”

The tenderness in his touch made Piper’s heart ache. She leaned into him, letting herself feel the warmth and safety of his embrace, but deep down, she knew that the emotional turmoil inside her wasn’t something that could be easily fixed.

Later that afternoon, Piper was still feeling the weight of her conversation with Gabriel when her phone buzzed with a message from Jasper.

Jasper: Can we talk later? I have something important I need to discuss with you.

Piper frowned, wondering what could be so urgent. She replied with a quick confirmation, setting a time to meet him later that evening. The knot in her stomach tightened as she wondered what this new conversation would bring. She hoped it wasn’t more complications, but with the way things were going, she doubted she would be so lucky.

Jasper arrived just as the sun was beginning to set. He looked more tired than usual, as if he hadn’t been sleeping much, and there was an air of tension about him that put Piper on edge. They sat on the back porch, the evening air cool and quiet around them.

“There’s something I need to tell you,” Jasper said, his voice strained. “Something you need to know about.”

Piper’s heart pounded. “What is it?”

Jasper hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s about Isabel.”

Piper stiffened at the mention of Isabel. She had been wary of Jasper’s lawyer from the start, but she had tried to put those feelings aside for the sake of Lily and the custody battle. Still, there had always been something about Isabel that made her feel uneasy, as if there was more going on than met the eye.

“What about her?” Piper asked, her voice carefully neutral.

Jasper’s expression darkened. “She’s been pushing me to focus more on the legal stuff, and at first, I thought it was just because she’s invested in the case. But lately... I’ve started to notice something else. She’s been trying to get closer to me, more personal. She’s made a few... comments.”

Piper’s stomach twisted. “What kind of comments?”

Jasper looked uncomfortable, as if he didn’t want to say it out loud. “She’s hinted that she’s interested in something more than just the case. That she wants... more from me.”

Piper felt a wave of anger rise in her chest. Isabel had always struck her as someone who was calculating, someone who knew how to manipulate people to get what she wanted. And now, it seemed, she was trying to manipulate Jasper.

“What did you say to her?” Piper asked, her voice sharp.

Jasper shook his head. “I told her I wasn’t interested, that I’m focused on Lily and on trying to figure out what’s best for her. But Isabel’s not backing down. She’s making things... complicated.”

Piper clenched her fists, trying to calm the storm of emotions swirling inside her. “Do you think she’s trying to use this to mess with the custody case?”

Jasper sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t know. But I don’t trust her, Piper. And I thought you should know what’s been going on.”

Piper nodded, her mind racing with the implications of what Jasper had told her. Isabel had already been an obstacle in their lives, but now it seemed she was trying to drive an even deeper wedge between them.
