The Lies That Binds

Caught Between Two Worlds

Ch. 61 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper sat on the front steps of her porch, staring down the street where Noah had disappeared just minutes earlier. The ache in her chest deepened as his words echoed in her mind. Let me see Lily. Let me prove I’ve changed.

But how could she know for sure?

She felt Gabriel’s presence beside her, his steady calm always grounding her. Yet, in this moment, even Gabriel’s strength couldn’t soothe the whirlwind of emotions crashing inside her. The choice she faced was more than just about Noah — it was about Lily’s future, about what kind of parent she wanted to be.

Gabriel sat down next to her, his gaze fixed on her profile. “You’re thinking about it, aren’t you?”

Piper didn’t answer right away. She knew what Gabriel wanted to hear — that she wouldn’t give Noah another chance, that she would protect Lily at all costs. But the decision wasn’t that simple. She had seen the desperation in Noah’s eyes, the sincerity in his voice. And that was the problem. What if he really had changed? What if, despite all the lies and chaos, he genuinely wanted to be better for Lily?

“I don’t know,” she finally whispered, her voice trembling with uncertainty. “I don’t know what the right thing is anymore.”

Gabriel’s expression darkened, and his frustration was evident. “The right thing is keeping Lily safe. You’ve seen what Noah is capable of, Piper. You can’t let him manipulate you again.”

“I know,” Piper said, her voice wavering. “But he’s still her father, Gabriel. And as much as I want to keep her away from him, a part of me knows that Lily deserves to have both of her parents in her life.”

Gabriel let out a slow breath, his eyes searching her face for a long moment. “Do you really believe he’s capable of being the father Lily needs?”

Piper felt a sharp pang in her chest. Gabriel’s words cut deep, because she didn’t know the answer to that question. She wanted to believe in the possibility of change, in redemption, but the reality was far more complicated. Noah had hurt her, betrayed her, and endangered their daughter. Trusting him again felt like walking through fire.

But wasn’t forgiveness supposed to be part of healing?

“I don’t know,” she whispered, barely able to meet Gabriel’s gaze. “But what if he really is trying? What if he’s telling the truth this time?”

Gabriel shook his head, his voice firm but not unkind. “Even if he is, it doesn’t erase what he’s done. You can’t risk Lily’s safety just because he says the right things now.”

Piper knew he was right. Logic told her that she couldn’t take Noah at his word, that she had to be cautious. But the mother in her, the part of her that wanted to give Lily the best life possible, was torn. She had always dreamed of raising Lily in a stable, loving family, and as much as it hurt to admit, a part of her still wished that Noah could be part of that.

She looked down at her hands, twisting her fingers together. “I’m just... so tired of being scared all the time. I’m tired of feeling like I’m constantly on the defensive, waiting for the next disaster.”

Gabriel’s expression softened, and he placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch warm and steady. “I know you are. But letting Noah back into your life isn’t going to take that fear away. If anything, it’ll make it worse.”

Piper swallowed hard, the weight of his words sinking in. She didn’t want to believe it, but deep down, she knew it was true. Noah’s presence had always brought chaos, and trusting him again would only open the door for more heartache.

But what choice did she have? She couldn’t keep him away forever.

“Let’s go inside,” Gabriel said gently, standing and holding out a hand to her. “You’ve had enough for one day.”

Piper hesitated, glancing back down the street one last time before taking Gabriel’s hand. As they walked into the house, she felt the weight of everything pressing down on her like never before.

Later that evening, Piper sat on the couch, watching Lily color at the coffee table, her small hands carefully picking out crayons and filling the paper with bright splashes of color. For a moment, Piper felt a flicker of peace. Lily’s world was still innocent and simple, untouched by the turmoil that Piper had been drowning in.

But how long would that last?

She had just started to rebuild her life with Lily, regaining temporary custody, putting the pieces back together after everything had fallen apart. The thought of losing that — of letting Noah disrupt it — terrified her. But could she really deny him the chance to be a father?

Her phone buzzed on the coffee table, pulling her from her thoughts. She glanced at it and saw a text from Jasper.

Jasper: How are you and Lily doing? Everything okay?

Piper sighed, her heart twisting. Jasper had been a constant presence in her life, even more so since the custody battle had begun. But her relationship with him was just as complicated as everything else. She appreciated his concern, his steady support, but every time she saw him, she was reminded of the unresolved feelings that still lingered between them.

She had never stopped loving him. Even after all the pain and distance, there was a part of her that would always care for Jasper. But there was Gabriel now, and that made things even more confusing.

She typed out a quick response.

Me: We’re okay. Just trying to figure things out. Thanks for checking in.

She stared at the screen for a moment before setting the phone down. The emotional tug-of-war between Gabriel and Jasper was becoming more difficult to navigate, especially now that Noah was back in the picture.

As if on cue, there was a soft knock on the door. Piper’s heart jumped, wondering who it could be at this hour. She glanced at Gabriel, who was sitting at the kitchen table, going over paperwork. He immediately stood and walked toward the door, his posture tense and alert.

Piper followed him, her anxiety rising as she prepared for the worst. When Gabriel opened the door, Piper’s breath caught in her throat.

Jasper stood on the porch, his expression weary but determined. His eyes flicked to Gabriel briefly before settling on Piper, his gaze full of unspoken words.

“I’m sorry for coming by unannounced,” Jasper said, his voice low. “But I needed to talk to you.”

Piper glanced at Gabriel, who nodded subtly, stepping aside to give them space. She opened the door wider and motioned for Jasper to come in.

They moved into the living room, and Piper felt the tension in the air thicken as Gabriel remained in the background. Jasper sat down on the edge of the couch, his hands clasped together, his brow furrowed with concern.

“I heard Noah showed up,” Jasper said, cutting straight to the point.

Piper’s chest tightened. “Yeah, he did.”

Jasper sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. “I was afraid of that. What did he want?”

“He says he’s changed,” Piper replied, her voice laced with uncertainty. “He wants to be part of Lily’s life again. He brought some kind of proof that he’s cut ties with Moreno and all the criminal stuff he was involved in.”

Jasper’s jaw clenched. “And you believe him?”

“I don’t know,” Piper admitted, her voice cracking. “I don’t know what to believe anymore.”

Jasper’s expression softened, and he leaned forward, his gaze filled with concern. “Piper, you’ve been through enough. You don’t owe Noah anything. If you let him back into your life, you’re risking everything you’ve built with Lily.”

“I know,” Piper whispered, tears stinging her eyes. “But he’s still her father, and I can’t just shut him out forever.”

Jasper reached out, gently taking her hand. “You’re a good mother, Piper. But you need to protect Lily, and yourself. Noah has hurt you before, and he’ll do it again if you let him.”

Piper’s heart ached as she listened to Jasper’s words. He had always been protective, always looking out for her, and she knew he only wanted what was best for Lily. But his presence here, his concern, stirred up all the emotions she had been trying to bury for so long.

Before she could respond, Gabriel entered the room, his expression tense but calm.

“He’s right,” Gabriel said quietly. “You have to be careful, Piper. Noah may be saying the right things, but that doesn’t mean he’s changed.”

Piper looked between the two men, her heart torn in two. They both wanted to protect her, to help her make the right decision, but the weight of their expectations was suffocating. She felt like she was standing on a tightrope, trying to balance between her past and her present, between what was safe and what was right.

“I just need time,” Piper said, her voice shaking. “I need time to figure out what’s best for Lily.”

Both Gabriel and Jasper nodded, though the tension between them was palpable. Piper could feel the unspoken rivalry simmering beneath the surface, and it only added to the weight of the decision she had to make.
