The Lies That Binds

Foundations of Trust

Ch. 38 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper stood in her living room, watching the light drizzle tap against the windows. Lily was busy drawing at the coffee table, humming a little tune while her crayons danced across the paper. Moments like these were fleeting — rare moments of calm in a storm that never seemed to end.

Her phone buzzed with a text. Gabriel.

Gabriel: I’ll stop by in an hour. I have something you need to see.

A small smile tugged at Piper’s lips. Gabriel had become her constant — steady and dependable in a way she hadn’t expected. He had been instrumental in navigating the legal nightmare with Noah, always showing up when she needed him most. And more than that, there was a comfort in his presence, a sense that maybe, just maybe, she didn’t have to handle everything alone anymore.

“Mommy, look!” Lily called, holding up her picture — a colorful jumble of shapes and scribbles.

Piper walked over and knelt beside her daughter. “It’s beautiful, sweetheart. Is that us?”

Lily pointed at three stick figures. “That’s me, you, and Bunny!” Then she added with a grin, “And Gabriel.”

The mention of Gabriel in Lily’s drawing startled Piper. He had become a quiet fixture in their lives — one Lily seemed to trust easily.

“Gabriel, huh?” Piper asked, her tone light. “What about Daddy?”

Lily’s smile faltered. “I like Daddy,” she said softly. “But sometimes he’s sad. And mad.”

Piper’s heart ached at the simple truth of her daughter’s words. Jasper’s presence in Lily’s life had always been a comfort, but even a five-year-old could sense the cracks forming beneath his surface.

She kissed the top of Lily’s head. “Well, it’s a very special picture. I love it.”

Gabriel arrived exactly when he said he would, dressed in his usual dark jacket, a quiet smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

“Hey,” Piper greeted, stepping aside to let him in.

“Hey,” Gabriel replied, his eyes flicking briefly to Lily, who waved from the living room. “She’s always in a good mood, isn’t she?”

“She has her moments,” Piper said with a grin. “But yes, most of the time.”

They moved to the kitchen, where Gabriel pulled a thick envelope from his jacket pocket and set it on the table. “I wanted to get these to you sooner,” he said, tapping the envelope. “It’s a deeper dive into the trust fund backing Noah’s custody battle. Turns out there’s more to this than we thought.”

Piper sat down, her pulse quickening. “What do you mean?”

Gabriel slid the documents across the table. “Noah has a silent partner — someone who’s been bankrolling his legal fees from the beginning. But what’s interesting is that the partner seems more interested in disrupting your life than actually helping Noah get custody of Lily.”

Piper’s brows furrowed as she flipped through the pages. “So it’s not just about Noah winning? What do they want?”

Gabriel leaned back in his chair, his expression thoughtful. “That’s the question, isn’t it? Whoever this is, they’ve gone to great lengths to stay hidden. But we’re getting closer.”

Piper stared at the documents, feeling the familiar knot of anxiety twist in her chest. The deeper they dug, the more tangled the web seemed to become.

“I hate this,” she whispered, running a hand through her hair. “I hate that I can’t just live my life without constantly looking over my shoulder.”

Gabriel reached across the table, his hand covering hers. His touch was warm, grounding. “You’re not alone, Piper. We’ll figure this out.”

Piper looked up, meeting his steady gaze. And for the first time in a long time, she believed him.

As the days passed, Piper found herself relying on Gabriel more and more. He was always there — whether it was helping her prepare for court, watching Lily while she took a much-needed break, or simply sitting with her in the quiet moments when the weight of everything felt too heavy to bear.

With every conversation, every shared moment, the walls Piper had built around herself began to crumble. She hadn’t realized how deeply her trust in others had been shattered until Gabriel started to rebuild it, piece by piece.

And though the bond between them grew stronger each day, it also raised questions Piper wasn’t ready to answer. Was she letting him in too fast? Was it fair to depend on him when her heart was still tangled up in Jasper?

And then there was Noah — a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

One evening, Gabriel stayed for dinner. They sat around the table, laughing as Lily told a long-winded story about her day at school. Piper couldn’t remember the last time the house had felt this light, this full of warmth.

After Lily went to bed, Piper and Gabriel lingered on the couch, the air between them thick with unspoken tension.

“You’re good with her,” Piper said softly, glancing toward the hallway where Lily slept.

Gabriel gave a small smile. “She’s easy to love.”

Piper’s heart ached at the simplicity of his words. It had been so long since anyone had made things feel easy.

For a moment, she allowed herself to lean closer to him, resting her head against his shoulder. Gabriel didn’t move, didn’t push — he simply stayed, steady and patient, as if waiting for her to decide what came next.

And in that quiet moment, Piper realized how much she had come to rely on him — not just as a friend, but as something more.

But just as the moment began to settle, the doorbell rang, shattering the peace.

Piper sat up, her pulse quickening. “Who the hell —”

Gabriel was already on his feet, his expression darkening as he moved toward the door.

Piper followed, her stomach twisting with dread. When she opened the door, her worst fears were confirmed.

Noah stood on the porch, his expression smug and dangerous.

“What do you want?” Piper demanded, stepping forward to block his view of Gabriel.

“I came to see my daughter,” Noah said smoothly, though there was a sharp edge to his tone. “And to remind you that this custody battle isn’t over.”

Gabriel moved closer, his presence a steady force at Piper’s side. “You need to leave, Noah.”

Noah’s gaze flicked to Gabriel, a sneer curling his lips. “Ah, yes. The knight in shining armor. How predictable.”

Piper’s hands clenched into fists at her sides. “Get out, Noah. Now.”

Noah leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper. “You think you’re in control, Piper? You’re not. Not even close.”

Before she could respond, Noah turned and strode back to his car, leaving a trail of unease in his wake.

Gabriel placed a hand on Piper’s shoulder, grounding her. “You okay?”

“No,” Piper whispered, her voice shaking. “But I will be.”

As the sound of Noah’s car faded into the night, Piper stood on the porch, the storm inside her brewing stronger than ever. She knew now that the battle with Noah was far from over. He was desperate — dangerous. And she had to be ready.

But as she looked at Gabriel, standing beside her, she realized she wasn’t fighting this war alone anymore.
