The Lies That Binds

A Stranger’s Intentions

Ch. 29 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Later that evening, Piper found herself back on the porch, the cool night air brushing over her skin as she waited for Jasper to arrive. She needed clarity — needed to see him face-to-face without the shadow of Isabel hanging between them. She told herself it was just about logistics, about co-parenting and legal matters, but deep down she knew there was more at stake.

The headlights of Jasper’s car appeared at the end of the driveway, and moments later, he stepped out, his familiar figure moving with easy grace through the twilight. Piper’s heart gave an involuntary lurch at the sight of him, a painful reminder of how deeply tied she still was to this man, no matter how much she tried to pull away.

“Hey,” Jasper greeted her as he reached the porch. His voice was soft, cautious, as if he knew the emotional minefield they were about to walk into.

“Hey,” Piper replied, hugging her arms to herself as a shield against the night’s chill — and against him.

He held up a manila folder. “Just some papers Amanda wanted me to drop off. Mostly logistics about visitation.”

Piper nodded, taking the folder from him. But neither of them made a move to go inside, and the silence between them grew heavier by the second. Jasper shifted on his feet, looking like he wanted to say something but wasn’t sure where to begin.

“How’s Lily doing?” he asked at last, his voice low.

“She’s good,” Piper said, her lips twitching into a small, bittersweet smile. “She was over the moon to come home.”

Jasper smiled, too — one of those rare, genuine smiles that always seemed to tug at Piper’s heart. “I bet.”

The warmth between them flickered briefly, like a flame struggling against the wind. For a moment, it felt like they were slipping back into the easy rhythm they used to share — before the secrets, the distance, and Isabel.

But then the moment passed, and the weight of everything unsaid settled between them again. Piper swallowed hard, her throat tightening with the urge to ask the one question that had been gnawing at her for days.

“How are things with Isabel?” she asked, trying to sound casual, though the words came out sharper than she intended.

Jasper’s brows furrowed slightly, as if the mention of Isabel surprised him. “She’s... been a big help,” he admitted. “With the legal stuff, I mean.”

Piper bit the inside of her cheek to keep from saying something she might regret. “Right. The legal stuff.”

Jasper’s gaze softened, his storm-gray eyes searching hers. “It’s not what you think, Piper.”

“Then tell me what it is,” she whispered, her voice breaking just slightly.

Jasper hesitated, running a hand through his hair. “Isabel and I... we’ve spent a lot of time together lately. But it’s complicated. I don’t know what it means yet.”

The words hit Piper like a punch to the gut. She had expected him to deny it, to tell her there was nothing between him and Isabel — but instead, he had given her a truth she wasn’t ready to hear.

“I see,” Piper said softly, wrapping her arms tighter around herself.

Jasper stepped closer, his gaze filled with something that looked like regret. “I never wanted to hurt you, Piper. You know that, right?”

She forced herself to meet his gaze, even though it felt like her heart was cracking in two. “It’s not just about me, Jasper. It’s about us. About what’s left of us.”

Jasper exhaled slowly, his shoulders sagging under the weight of everything left unsaid. “I wish I knew how to fix it.”

Piper gave him a sad, tired smile. “I wish you did, too.”

After Jasper left, Piper sat alone on the porch, her emotions swirling like a storm inside her chest. She wanted to scream, to cry, to fight back against the messy, complicated reality of her life. But all she could do was sit there, staring out into the darkness, feeling the weight of everything pressing down on her.

Just as she was about to go inside, the sound of footsteps on the gravel path made her freeze. She turned toward the noise, her heart skipping a beat when she saw Gabriel approaching the porch.

“Evening,” he said, his voice low and smooth. “Looks like I’m interrupting.”

Piper gave him a wary glance. “What are you doing here?”

Gabriel offered a small, disarming smile. “I was in the neighborhood. Thought I’d check in.”

“Do you make a habit of checking in on people unannounced?” Piper asked, her tone sharper than she intended.

Gabriel chuckled softly. “Only the interesting ones.”

Piper crossed her arms, her nerves on edge. There was something about Gabriel that unsettled her — something she couldn’t quite put her finger on. He was too polished, too charming, and far too comfortable walking into her life like he belonged there.

“What do you really want, Gabriel?” Piper asked, her voice low.

Gabriel’s expression shifted slightly, the easy charm slipping just enough to reveal a flicker of something darker beneath the surface. “I told you. I’m just here to help.”

“Help with what?”, she asked.

Gabriel leaned against the porch railing, his gaze steady and unflinching. “With whatever you need.”

Piper narrowed her eyes, suspicion curling in her chest. “And why would you want to help me?”

Gabriel’s smile was slow and deliberate, like a man who knew more than he was letting on. “Let’s just say I have a vested interest in seeing things play out... the right way.”

Piper’s heart pounded in her chest, a knot of unease tightening in her stomach. “What does that mean?”

Gabriel gave her a small, knowing smile. “You’ll figure it out soon enough.”

Before Piper could respond, Gabriel straightened and gave her a nod. “Good night, Piper. I’ll be seeing you.”

And with that, he disappeared into the night, leaving Piper standing on the porch with her thoughts spinning wildly.

As the days passed, Gabriel’s presence lingered in the back of Piper’s mind, an enigma she couldn’t quite solve. There was something about him that unsettled her — but also intrigued her.

And as much as she hated to admit it, there was a small part of her that was drawn to him.

It wasn’t just that he was charming or handsome, though he was certainly both. It was the way he carried himself — the quiet confidence, the easy grace, the sense that he knew more than he was letting on.

But it was dangerous, too. Gabriel wasn’t someone she could trust and with everything else falling apart around her, the last thing Piper needed was more uncertainty in her life.

However, the choice wasn’t entirely hers to make, because whether she liked it or not, Gabriel was here. And something told Piper that he wasn’t going anywhere.

That evening, as Piper lay awake in bed, her thoughts drifted once again to Jasper — and to Isabel. She had spent so much of her life fighting for Jasper, holding on to the hope that they could find their way back to each other.

But maybe... maybe it was time to let go.

And as the thought settled into her mind, Piper felt a strange sense of relief — like a weight lifting off her chest.

And for the first time in a long time, Piper felt something she hadn’t felt in ages:

Hope.
