“I don’t even know what the right decision is anymore,” Piper admitted, her voice thick with emotion. “I feel like I’m stuck between fighting for her here or running away, but either way, I’m putting her in danger.”
Gabriel’s expression softened, and he reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face. The gesture was intimate, comforting. “You’re not alone in this, Piper. Whatever you decide, I’ll be here. I’ll protect you both.”

Piper’s pulse quickened. “What things?”
Gabriel hesitated for a moment, as if deciding how much to tell her. Finally, he spoke. “Before I came into your life, I was involved with some... people. Dangerous people. I thought I could walk away, but it’s never that simple. They always have a way of pulling you back in.”
Piper’s stomach twisted. “Are they the same people who are after us now?”
Gabriel shook his head. “No. These people — Moreno’s people — are connected to Noah. But that doesn’t mean my past won’t catch up with me eventually. I just didn’t want you and Lily to get caught in the crossfire.”
Piper swallowed hard, trying to process everything. She had suspected that Gabriel had a complicated past, but hearing it confirmed sent a wave of unease through her.
