The Lies That Binds

The Storm Approaches

Ch. 49 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper’s heart pounded as she stared at the message on her phone. Her blood turned to ice as the weight of the threat settled over her.

You’ve gotten too close. Time’s running out.

The words felt like a noose tightening around her, squeezing out the air in her lungs. She gripped the phone tighter, her mind racing. The message was different this time, more urgent — more dangerous. This wasn’t just a scare tactic. It was a warning, and whoever was sending these messages was getting closer.

For the first time since the custody battle began, Piper felt truly powerless.

Her instincts screamed to call the police, to get out of the house, to do something. But she knew it wasn’t that simple. If Noah was connected to this threat, if his past criminal ties were surfacing now, then she and Lily were in far deeper danger than she had realized. And the police might not be enough.

The stakes had shifted. This was no longer just a custody battle — it was a fight for their lives.

Piper stood abruptly, her pulse racing, the quiet house suddenly feeling suffocating. She had to get out of there, had to get some fresh air and clear her head before the panic took over completely.

She grabbed her coat and headed for the door, stepping out into the cold night air. The wind bit at her skin as she walked down the front steps and into the yard, her thoughts racing in every direction.

Gabriel’s revelations about his past haunted her, intertwining with Noah’s looming presence. Could they both be connected to this threat? Could Gabriel’s past ties have somehow merged with Noah’s dangerous connections? And more importantly, could she trust Gabriel?

Piper walked down the street, her breath visible in the cool air. The quiet of the neighborhood felt eerie tonight, as if the very streets knew something was wrong. She stopped at the end of her block, her mind a mess of doubts and fears, before pulling out her phone and dialing Gabriel’s number.

He answered on the first ring.

“Piper? Are you okay?” His voice was filled with concern, and for a moment, she almost let herself believe that he could protect her from all of this.

“No,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I got another message. They said I’m getting too close... Gabriel, I don’t know what to do.”

There was silence on the other end of the line, but Piper could hear him breathing, thinking. His next words were steady, calm, as if he was trying to keep her grounded. “I’m coming over. Stay where you are.”

Piper hesitated. A part of her wanted to let him come, to feel that sense of safety he brought with him. But another part of her — the part that had been scarred by betrayal after betrayal — wasn’t sure if she could trust anyone right now.

“No,” she said quickly, her pulse quickening. “I need to be alone. I just... I need to think.”

“Piper, it’s not safe —”

“I know,” she interrupted, her voice sharper than she intended. “I know it’s not safe. But I can’t think straight right now. I need to figure out what’s going on. Just give me some time.”

There was a pause on the line, but when Gabriel spoke again, his tone softened. “Okay. But I’m not far. If you need anything, call me. I’ll be there.”

Piper nodded, even though he couldn’t see her. “Thank you.”

She hung up the phone, her heart still racing. The fear was pressing in on her from all sides, and no matter how much she tried to push it down, it wouldn’t go away. She was in danger — real danger — and she wasn’t sure how to fight back.

The next morning, after a restless night, Piper sat at the kitchen table, her phone in front of her. Her mind was still clouded with uncertainty, but there was one thing she knew for sure: she couldn’t ignore this any longer.

She had to confront Noah.

It was a risk, but it was one she had to take. Noah had been the cause of so much chaos in her life, and if there were any chance that he was connected to the threats, she needed answers. The thought of facing him made her stomach turn, but she knew it was the only way to protect herself — and Lily.

Piper dialed Noah’s number, her heart pounding in her chest as the phone rang. After what felt like an eternity, he answered.

“Well, this is a surprise,” Noah said, his voice smooth, almost smug. “I didn’t expect to hear from you.”

Piper clenched her jaw, trying to keep her voice steady. “I need to talk to you. Face to face.”

There was a pause, and when Noah spoke again, his tone shifted — cautious now. “What’s this about, Piper?”

“You know exactly what it’s about,” she snapped, her frustration bubbling over. “I’ve been getting threats. Someone is watching me, and I think it’s connected to you.”

Noah laughed softly, but there was no humor in it. “Oh, Piper, you always did have a flair for the dramatic.”

“Stop it!” Piper’s voice shook, the anger and fear she had been holding in finally spilling out. “I’m serious, Noah. I know about your past. I know you’ve been involved in things you never told me about. And now, someone’s threatening me and Lily. I need to know the truth.”

The line went quiet for a moment, and Piper’s heart raced as she waited for his response. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, calculated.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Then explain it to me,” Piper shot back. “Tell me what’s going on. Or are you just going to let your past destroy everything?”

Noah was silent again, but Piper could feel the tension radiating from him, even through the phone. She had hit a nerve.

“Fine,” he said finally, his voice cold. “If you want answers, meet me. We’ll talk.”

Piper’s pulse quickened. “Where?”

“I’ll text you the address,” Noah said, his tone dismissive. “But don’t get any ideas, Piper. This isn’t a game you can win.”

The line went dead.

Piper’s hands trembled as she lowered the phone, dread curling in her stomach. She had agreed to meet Noah, but the danger felt more real now than ever. And the worst part was, she had no idea what to expect.

Noah sent the address less than an hour later. It was a secluded spot on the outskirts of town, an abandoned warehouse that immediately set off alarm bells in Piper’s head. Everything about it screamed trap, but she couldn’t back out now.

She couldn’t afford to wait any longer.

Before she left, Piper double-checked that Lily was safely at school, her mind spinning with the possibility that this confrontation could go horribly wrong. She had no choice but to trust Amanda and the school to keep Lily safe while she faced Noah.

The drive to the warehouse was tense, the quiet hum of the car engine doing nothing to soothe her nerves. The closer she got, the heavier the weight on her chest became. Noah had always been dangerous in his own way — manipulative, controlling — but now, it felt like she was walking into something far darker.

As she pulled up to the warehouse, the building loomed large and foreboding in front of her, its windows broken, its walls covered in graffiti. The place reeked of neglect, of secrets that had been left to rot. Piper parked the car and stepped out, her hands clammy as she approached the entrance.

Noah was already there, leaning against the wall with a smug smile on his face. He straightened up as she approached, his eyes gleaming with something dark and unreadable.

“Well, well,” he said, his voice dripping with mockery. “You actually showed up.”

Piper stopped a few feet away from him, her body tense, ready for anything. “I want answers, Noah. Now.”

Noah shrugged casually, as if this were nothing more than a game to him. “You always did have a way of digging where you didn’t belong.”

“Stop with the games,” Piper snapped. “What did you get involved in? Who are these people sending me threats?”

Noah’s expression hardened, his smile fading. “You don’t understand the world I came from, Piper. You never did. I tried to keep you out of it, but you just couldn’t leave it alone, could you?”

Piper’s heart raced, her fear spiking. “What did you do?”

Noah stepped closer, his voice lowering to a dangerous whisper. “I made enemies, Piper. Powerful enemies. And now, they want something. Something I’m not willing to give.”

Piper’s stomach dropped. “And now they’re after me?”

Noah smiled, but there was no warmth in it. “You’re just collateral damage. You were never supposed to be part of this.”

Piper’s hands clenched into fists, her heart pounding in her chest. “What do they want, Noah?”

Noah’s eyes darkened, and for the first time, Piper saw fear flicker behind his arrogant facade.

“They want me to pay for what I’ve done. But they’ll go through you to do it.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Piper’s mind raced, the reality of the danger she and Lily were in crashing down on her. This wasn’t just about the custody battle anymore. This was about survival.

Before she could respond, a sound echoed through the warehouse — a car engine. Piper turned, her breath catching in her throat as another vehicle pulled up.

The doors opened and two men stepped out. Their expressions were cold, calculating. And in that moment, Piper realized — she was no longer just dealing with Noah.

The real threat had arrived.
