The Lies That Binds

Shadows from the Past

Ch. 48 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The night after the hearing was eerily quiet, but inside Piper’s mind, everything was chaos. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the threatening message still displayed on her phone, unable to shake the icy dread that had settled deep in her chest. The words from the unknown sender felt like a knife pressed against her skin.

Gabriel had driven her home, but now that she was alone in the silence, every shadow in her house seemed to loom larger, more menacing. The only thing keeping her grounded was Lily, who was fast asleep upstairs, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing around them.

Noah’s lies, the courtroom drama, and now this — someone out there was watching her, threatening her, and it wasn’t just about the custody battle anymore. It felt bigger, darker, as if the past that Noah had tried so hard to keep buried was clawing its way to the surface.

And now, it was targeting her.

Piper’s pulse quickened as she thought about Noah’s life before their marriage. He had always been secretive about certain things, brushing off her questions about his work and his connections with vague answers. He’d made a point to hide parts of himself, and at the time, Piper had chosen to ignore the warning signs. She had believed that those parts of him didn’t affect her or Lily.

But now, everything felt exposed, and the chilling realization that she didn’t know just how deep Noah’s secrets ran settled in. She had thought Noah was the threat — but what if there was something far worse lurking behind him?

Her phone buzzed again, and Piper jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. But it wasn’t another threatening message — it was Amanda.

Amanda: You okay? I saw you leave in a hurry after the hearing.

Piper hesitated, her fingers hovering over the screen. How could she explain what was happening without sounding paranoid? She couldn’t afford to let Amanda think she was unraveling, not when they were so close to the judge’s final decision.

Piper: I’m okay. Just overwhelmed. I’ll call you tomorrow.

She needed to think, needed to figure out what this message meant before involving anyone else.

Her thoughts drifted back to Gabriel and Jasper. Gabriel had been a rock for her, someone she had come to rely on, but after today, Jasper’s words haunted her — You don’t know everything about him. Could Gabriel be hiding something? Could his mysterious past be tied to this new threat? And then there was Jasper himself, with his resurfacing feelings and his protective instincts.

It all felt too tangled, too complicated. And Piper didn’t have time to get tangled. Not with Lily’s safety on the line.

The next morning, the tension in the air was palpable. Piper went through the motions — making breakfast, getting Lily ready for school — but her mind was miles away, turning over the message in her head again and again.

After dropping Lily off, she returned home, locking the door behind her, her senses on high alert. She couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her, that whoever had sent the message was closer than she thought.

The first thing she did was call Amanda.

“I got a message,” Piper said, her voice tight as soon as Amanda picked up. “It’s a threat. Someone knows about me... about Noah.”

Amanda’s tone shifted immediately. “A threat? From who?”

“I don’t know,” Piper admitted, pacing her living room. “The message didn’t say who it was from, but it’s clear they know something about Noah’s past. I think this goes deeper than the custody case.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line, then Amanda spoke carefully. “Noah has always been shady, but do you think this could be related to something illegal? If it’s serious, we need to get the authorities involved.”

Piper’s stomach twisted at the thought. “I don’t know. I never pushed Noah about his work, but there were times... I don’t know, Amanda. I’m scared.”

Amanda’s voice softened. “Okay, listen. We’ll keep this quiet for now, but you need to be careful. Don’t go anywhere alone, and don’t let Lily out of your sight.”

Piper nodded, her mind racing. She had to keep her daughter safe. That was the only thing that mattered. “Thanks, Amanda. I’ll call you if anything else happens.”

After hanging up, Piper sat down, her hands trembling as she thought about what Amanda had said. If Noah was involved with something criminal, it wasn’t just her custody case that was in danger — it was her life. And Lily’s.

By the afternoon, Piper had convinced herself that she was overreacting. The message was probably just Noah’s last-ditch effort to scare her into submission. He knew he was losing the custody battle, and this was his way of trying to regain control.

But deep down, she knew that wasn’t true. There was something different about this. Something darker.

Her phone buzzed again, and this time, it was a call from Gabriel.

“Piper,” he said as soon as she picked up, “I’ve been thinking about what happened yesterday. That message you got... I don’t like it. I think we need to talk.”

Piper’s heart raced. She had been avoiding this conversation, not wanting to face the possibility that Gabriel might be involved. But she couldn’t avoid it forever.

“Okay,” she said quietly. “Come over.”

Gabriel arrived at her house within the hour, his expression tense as he stepped inside. Piper could feel the shift between them immediately — there was a distance now, a space filled with unspoken questions and doubts.

“I’ve been going over everything in my head,” Gabriel said, sitting down across from her. “And I think this goes beyond Noah. Whoever sent that message, they’re trying to scare you, and it’s working. But we need to figure out why.”

Piper nodded, but her chest tightened with anxiety. “Gabriel, I need to ask you something.”

He looked at her, his gaze steady. “What is it?”

Piper hesitated, the words heavy on her tongue. “Are you... Are you hiding anything from me? About your past?”

Gabriel’s expression shifted slightly, a flicker of something unreadable passing through his eyes. “Why are you asking me that?”

“Jasper...” Piper started, her voice faltering. “He said I don’t know everything about you. And after what happened in court, with Noah’s lawyer bringing you into it... I need to know the truth, Gabriel. Is there something I should be worried about?”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, Piper thought he wasn’t going to answer. But then he sighed, running a hand through his hair, clearly struggling with something.

“There are things about my past that I haven’t told you,” he admitted, his voice low. “But not because I’m hiding anything dangerous. It’s because I didn’t want to burden you with it.”

Piper’s heart raced. “What things?”

Gabriel looked away, his hands clasped together. “I was involved with some people in my younger years... people who weren’t exactly on the right side of the law. It’s not something I’m proud of, but it’s behind me now. I’ve spent years trying to put distance between myself and that life.”

Piper’s stomach twisted. “Is that why Noah’s lawyer brought your name into the hearing? Are they connected to those people?”

Gabriel shook his head. “I don’t think so. But I can’t say for sure. Noah’s manipulative, and if he’s somehow tied to the people I used to know...”

Piper stood up, pacing the room. “So I could be in danger? Lily could be in danger because of something in your past?”

Gabriel rose to his feet, stepping closer to her. “Piper, listen to me. I will never let anything happen to you or Lily. I swear it. Whoever sent that message, whatever is happening, I’ll deal with it. But you have to trust me.”

Piper’s mind raced, the walls closing in around her. Everything felt like it was spiraling out of control. She had trusted Gabriel, let him into her life, and now she wasn’t sure if that trust had put her in more danger.

But as she looked into his eyes, filled with sincerity and desperation, she wanted to believe him. She needed to believe him.

“I want to trust you,” Piper whispered. “But I can’t keep running in the dark.”

Gabriel took her hand, his grip firm but gentle. “Then let’s stop running. Let’s face this head-on.”

Piper looked up at him, her heart torn between fear and the flicker of hope he always seemed to bring her. But there was no more time for hesitation. The threat was real, and it was closing in.

And as much as she wanted to fight it alone, she knew she couldn’t. Not this time. That night, as Piper lay in bed, her phone buzzed one more time. Another message from the unknown number.

Unknown: You’ve gotten too close. Time’s running out.

Her blood ran cold.

The danger wasn’t just lurking in the shadows anymore. It was here. And it was only a matter of time before it came crashing into her life.
