The Lies That Binds

The Calm Before the Storm

Ch. 31 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The next morning, Piper woke with a strange sense of lightness, as if the emotional weight she had carried for so long had shifted — just slightly — off her shoulders. She didn’t know exactly what had changed, but letting Gabriel into her space the night before had given her a glimpse of something she hadn’t dared hope for: the possibility of peace. Maybe even happiness.

The thought scared her as much as it comforted her. She wasn’t used to feeling anything but doubt, and the idea of trusting someone new — especially someone as complicated as Gabriel — felt like walking a tightrope. But there was also a part of her, buried deep beneath layers of hurt, that wanted to see where this road could lead.

She stretched beneath the sheets, the morning sunlight spilling through the window. From down the hall, she could hear Lily’s soft humming as she played in her room, content in the safety of their home. For the first time in a long time, Piper felt like maybe things were starting to fall into place.

But that fragile sense of peace didn’t last long.

By mid-morning, Piper’s phone buzzed with a message from Amanda.

Amanda: We need to talk. Call me ASAP.

A flicker of anxiety shot through Piper. Amanda never sounded urgent unless there was trouble brewing. She stepped out onto the porch, where the morning air still carried the crispness of fall, and dialed Amanda’s number.

Amanda picked up on the second ring. “Piper, I’ve been digging into some new developments, and you’re not going to like what I found.”

Piper’s heart sank. “What now?”

“Remember those anonymous funds that were backing Noah’s custody case?” Amanda asked. “Well, I did some deeper digging, and I found a trail. It’s messy, but it leads to someone connected to Isabel’s firm.”

Piper’s stomach dropped. “Wait... you’re telling me Isabel is involved?”

“Not directly,” Amanda said. “But someone she works with — someone in her orbit — is funneling money into Noah’s fight. I don’t have all the pieces yet, but I thought you should know.”

Piper’s mind raced, a tangle of confusion and betrayal taking root.

Why would someone close to Isabel back Noah?

Was this just another power move, or was there something more sinister going on?

“Do you think Isabel knows about this?” Piper asked, her voice tight.

“I can’t say for sure,” Amanda replied. “But it’s something we need to keep an eye on.”

Piper exhaled slowly, rubbing her temples as the weight of the situation pressed down on her. Just when she thought things were settling, a new complication had dropped into her lap. And Isabel was right in the middle of it.

The rest of the morning passed in a blur. Piper tried to focus on her usual routines — making breakfast for Lily, folding laundry, checking emails — but her thoughts kept circling back to Isabel.

Has this been her plan all along? To insert herself into Jasper’s life and subtly pull the strings behind the scenes? Or was Isabel just another pawn in someone else’s game? Either way, it was clear that Piper needed answers — and fast.

Her phone buzzed again, this time with a message from Jasper.

Jasper: Can we talk later? I need to explain a few things.

Piper’s stomach twisted. She knew exactly what those “few things” were.

Me: Sure. Just tell me when and where.

His response was almost immediate.

Jasper: How about the park at 3:00?

Piper stared at the message, her heart pounding. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for whatever conversation lay ahead — but she knew she had to face it head-on.

By the time 3 p.m. rolled around, Piper was sitting on a bench at the park, watching the wind stir the leaves on the trees. She saw Jasper approaching in the distance, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his jacket. He looked tired, as if the weight of the past few weeks had finally caught up to him.

When he reached her, he gave her a small, hesitant smile. “Hey.”

“Hey,” Piper replied, shifting slightly on the bench to make room for him.

Jasper sat down beside her, the silence between them heavy but not uncomfortable. For a moment, neither of them spoke, as if they were both gathering the courage to say what needed to be said.

Finally, Jasper broke the silence. “I know things between us have been... complicated lately.”

“That’s one way to put it,” Piper said with a dry smile.

Jasper sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t want you to think I’ve been hiding anything from you, Piper. But there are things with Isabel that I haven’t figured out yet. She’s been a big part of my life recently, and... I don’t know what that means for us.”

Piper swallowed hard, forcing herself to keep her voice steady. “Are you in love with her?”

Jasper looked down at his hands, his expression troubled. “I don’t know,” he admitted quietly. “I care about her, but... it’s different from what I felt with you.”

Piper’s heart ached at the honesty in his words, but she forced herself to nod. “I appreciate you telling me the truth, Jasper. Even if it’s not what I wanted to hear.”

They sat in silence for a few moments, the weight of their shared history pressing down on them.

“I don’t want to lose you, Piper,” Jasper said softly. “No matter what happens, I want us to find a way to move forward — for Lily’s sake.”

Piper gave him a sad smile. “I want that too. But we can’t keep pretending things are the same as they were.”

Jasper nodded, his expression filled with quiet regret. “I know.”

They sat together in the fading afternoon light, both of them silently acknowledging that the love they had shared — while real — was no longer enough to hold them together.

That evening, after putting Lily to bed, Piper sat on the porch with a glass of wine, letting the cool night air soothe her frayed nerves. Her conversation with Jasper had been difficult, but it had also brought a strange sense of closure. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she could breathe again — like she was finally ready to let go of the past and embrace whatever came next.

As she sat in the quiet, lost in thought, she heard the soft crunch of footsteps on the gravel path.

She looked up and saw Gabriel standing at the edge of the porch, his dark eyes watching her with quiet intensity.

“Mind if I join you?” he asked, his voice low and smooth.

Piper gave him a small, tired smile. “Sure.”

Gabriel sat down beside her, his presence calm and steady. They sat together in comfortable silence, watching the stars appear one by one in the night sky.

“You okay?” Gabriel asked after a while, his gaze steady.

Piper exhaled slowly, her breath visible in the cool night air. “I think so,” she whispered. “For the first time in a long time.”

Gabriel smiled — a rare, genuine smile that made something inside Piper stir.

And in that moment, she knew that whatever the future held — whether it was messy, complicated, or uncertain — she was ready for it.
