The Lies That Binds

Lines in the Sand

Ch. 65 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The house was eerily quiet after Gabriel stepped outside, leaving Piper standing in the kitchen with her arms tightly wrapped around Lily. Her heart raced as she watched him disappear into the treeline, tension rippling through her body like electricity. She had seen someone — she knew it wasn’t her imagination. The figure lurking by the fence was real, and now the danger felt terrifyingly close.

Lily shifted in her arms, looking up at her with wide, innocent eyes. “Mommy, who was that man? Why did we come inside?”

Piper forced a smile, even though her insides were twisted with fear. She couldn’t let Lily sense how scared she was — she had to stay strong for her. “It’s just someone Gabriel is going to check on,” Piper said softly. “Everything’s okay, sweetie. I promise.”

But even as the words left her mouth, Piper wasn’t sure she believed them. She knelt down, brushing a strand of hair behind Lily’s ear, trying to calm herself as much as she was trying to calm her daughter.

Lily clung to her, nodding slowly. “Can I still play outside later?”

Piper’s chest tightened. She didn’t want to rob Lily of her innocence, but at that moment, keeping her safe was more important than anything. “Maybe we’ll play inside for now, okay? How about we bake some cookies later?”

Lily’s face lit up with excitement at the mention of cookies, and Piper felt a small wave of relief. Distraction — that’s what she needed. A way to keep Lily’s mind off of what was happening, and maybe even keep her own fears at bay.

Piper stood up, leading Lily to the living room. “Why don’t you grab your favorite book, and we’ll read for a while. Mommy just needs to make sure Gabriel’s okay.”

Lily nodded, skipping over to the bookshelf to grab her favorite storybook, completely unaware of the gravity of the situation. Piper’s heart ached as she watched her daughter. Lily was still so innocent, so untouched by the harsh realities of the world. And Piper would do anything to keep it that way.

Once Lily was settled on the couch, Piper moved back toward the kitchen, her eyes darting to the window. Her breath hitched as she scanned the yard, her pulse thundering in her ears. The sunlight was beginning to fade, casting long shadows across the yard, but there was no sign of Gabriel — or the mysterious figure she had seen by the fence.

Just as she was about to grab her phone and call him, the back door creaked open, and Gabriel stepped inside. His face was tight with concern, his eyes sharper than before.

“What did you find?” Piper asked, her voice a hushed whisper, not wanting to alarm Lily.

Gabriel shook his head, his gaze sweeping the room before it landed on her. “Whoever was out there is gone now, but you were right. There’s been someone watching the house.”

Piper’s stomach clenched. She had known something was wrong, but hearing it confirmed made her fear spike. “Do you think it’s them? The people from Noah’s past?”

Gabriel sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s possible. They’re trying to send a message — trying to remind Noah that they’re still in control. And they know that using you and Lily is the easiest way to get to him.”

Piper’s mind raced. How did it come to this? How had her life spiraled so far out of control that she and her daughter were now pawns in some dangerous game she barely understood?

“I can’t live like this,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I can’t let them threaten Lily. I need to do something, Gabriel. But I don’t know what.”

Gabriel crossed the room, gently taking her hands in his. “We’ll figure it out. I’m not going to let anything happen to either of you. But we need to be smart about this.”

Piper looked up at him, her eyes filled with desperation. “What if it’s not enough? What if they come back and next time they’re not just watching?”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened, and she could see the resolve in his eyes. “We’ll be ready. I’m going to make some calls, get more eyes on the house. If they come back, we’ll know.”

Piper nodded, though the fear still gnawed at her. “What about Noah? Shouldn’t he know what’s happening?”

Gabriel hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. “Not yet. If Noah finds out that his old associates are watching you and Lily, he could react in a way that makes things worse. We need to handle this carefully.”

Piper’s heart raced. As much as she hated keeping secrets, especially when it came to Lily’s safety, she trusted Gabriel’s judgment. He had always known how to handle difficult situations with calm precision. If he thought it was best to keep Noah in the dark for now, then she would follow his lead.

“Okay,” Piper whispered, her hands shaking slightly as she pulled away. “Okay.”

Gabriel’s expression softened as he watched her, his eyes filled with concern. He took a step closer, his hand gently brushing against her cheek. “I know this is hard, Piper. But we’re going to get through this.”

His touch sent a wave of warmth through her, momentarily pushing back the fear that had been clouding her mind. For a brief second, Piper let herself lean into that warmth, into the steady presence that Gabriel had become in her life. He had always been her protector, and now, more than ever, she needed that strength.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “For everything.”

Gabriel’s hand lingered on her cheek for a moment longer before he pulled back, his expression unreadable. “You don’t need to thank me. I’m here because I want to be.”

Piper’s heart fluttered, the weight of his words sinking in. There was something more between them now, something deeper than just friendship or protection. But even as she felt that connection growing, the shadow of everything else — Noah, Jasper, the danger surrounding them — complicated things.

Before Piper could respond, the sound of Lily’s voice calling from the living room interrupted the moment.

“Mommy, are you coming? I picked the book!”

Piper blinked, the spell of the moment broken. She glanced toward the living room, then back at Gabriel, her heart heavy with the weight of everything unsaid.

“I should go read with her,” Piper said softly, her voice laced with exhaustion.

Gabriel nodded, his eyes lingering on hers. “I’ll keep an eye on things from here. Go spend time with Lily.”

Piper hesitated for a second, then gave him a small, grateful smile before heading toward the living room. As she sat down beside Lily, pulling the little girl into her arms, she tried to push the fear away, trying to focus on the sound of her daughter’s laughter as they began to read.

But even as she smiled and turned the pages of the book, Piper couldn’t shake the feeling that the danger was growing closer with every passing second.

Later that night, after Lily had fallen asleep, Piper stood by the window in her bedroom, staring out into the darkness. Gabriel had left a few hours ago, but not before ensuring that the house was secure. He had promised to be back in the morning, but Piper still felt uneasy.

She had locked every door, checked every window, but it still didn’t feel like enough. The memory of the figure by the fence lingered in her mind, and the knowledge that they were being watched made her feel vulnerable in a way she hadn’t felt in a long time.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, and she reached for it, her heart skipping a beat when she saw Jasper’s name flash across the screen.

Jasper: How’s everything? I’ve been thinking about you and Lily. Let me know if you need anything.

Piper stared at the message for a long moment, her chest tightening with conflicting emotions. Jasper had always been there for her, in his own way, but things between them had become so complicated. There was still something unresolved between them, something she couldn’t ignore, but she wasn’t sure if revisiting those feelings was the right thing to do.

Especially not now, with Gabriel becoming such an important part of her life.

Piper’s fingers hovered over the keyboard, unsure of how to respond. She wanted to reach out, to tell Jasper everything that was happening, but she didn’t want to pull him into the chaos of her life again.

Instead, she typed a reply.

Me: We’re okay for now. I’ll let you know if anything changes.

As soon as she hit send, Piper set the phone down and leaned against the window, closing her eyes as she tried to calm her racing heart.
