The Lies That Binds

A Web of Secrets

Ch. 47 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The courthouse was a battlefield. Piper could feel the tension in the air as they filed back into the courtroom, Amanda beside her, a stack of documents and notes ready to be wielded like weapons. They had prepared for this, but the weight of what was at stake made each moment feel precarious, like walking a tightrope that could snap at any second.

Noah sat across from her, his expression unreadable, though there was something smug about the way he glanced at her, as if he knew something she didn’t. Piper's stomach churned. Every time she thought she had a handle on him, he found a new way to rattle her.

Gabriel was there too, seated a few rows behind her, his dark eyes focused, unwavering. His presence was comforting in a way that had grown deeper in the past few weeks. But it wasn’t enough to shake the feeling that something else was simmering just below the surface — something he hadn’t told her.

And then there was Jasper. He hadn’t spoken to her much in the past few days, but his presence was still felt, a quiet pull that had always been there, no matter how far they drifted apart. Piper hadn’t fully allowed herself to confront her feelings for him, especially with Gabriel now in her life. But now, as the hearing drew closer to its conclusion, the tension between them was impossible to ignore.

The judge entered, and the room stilled. Piper’s heart pounded as the hearing began. Amanda was quick to start, outlining their case with precision, highlighting Noah’s manipulation and the twisted lengths he had gone to control Piper and keep her under his thumb. It was a damning case, and Piper could feel the tide turning in their favor.

But Noah wasn’t done yet. His lawyer stood, a slim man with sharp eyes who always seemed to have a trick up his sleeve.

“Your Honor,” Noah’s lawyer began smoothly, “we have new evidence to present.”

Piper’s chest tightened.

New evidence? What now again?

A manila envelope was handed to the judge, and as he flipped through the contents, his expression grew harder to read. He looked up, his eyes locking on Piper.

“It has come to our attention,” the lawyer continued, “that Ms. Blackwood has been involved in a romantic relationship with a key witness in this case — Gabriel Delaney.”

The words hit Piper like a slap.

Gabriel?

She glanced back at him, her pulse racing. What were they talking about? There was nothing improper about their relationship. It had never interfered with the case.

But the lawyer wasn’t finished. “This relationship, Your Honor, calls into question Ms. Blackwood’s priorities. It suggests that her focus has been divided, and that she has not acted in the best interest of her daughter, Lily.”

Piper felt the blood drain from her face. This was Noah’s play. This was the angle he had been waiting to use against her — to twist her connection with Gabriel into something sinister, something that could damage her credibility as a mother.

Gabriel stood up, his jaw clenched. “This is a lie. My relationship with Piper has nothing to do with this case.”

The judge held up a hand to silence him. “I will determine the relevance of this information.”

Piper’s heart raced. She knew how these things could be spun, how a simple relationship could be painted as irresponsible or neglectful, especially in a custody case. And Noah was counting on that.

Amanda, calm but forceful, stood to counter the accusation. “Your Honor, this is an attempt to distract from the real issue. Ms. Blackwood’s relationship with Mr. Delaney has no bearing on her ability to care for her daughter. Furthermore, this claim is based on nothing more than insinuations.”

The judge nodded, though his gaze remained critical. “I will take this into consideration. For now, we will move forward.”

The rest of the hearing blurred together, a whirlwind of legal arguments and testimony that seemed to stretch on forever. Piper’s mind was spinning, her thoughts split between the case and the bombshell Noah had just dropped. She hadn’t anticipated this — hadn’t thought that her personal life would be dragged into the fight.

When the judge called for a recess, Piper felt like she could finally breathe again, though her relief was short-lived.

As soon as they stepped into the hallway, Gabriel was at her side, his eyes dark with frustration. “Piper, you know this is just a tactic. He’s trying to get inside your head.”

“I know,” Piper said, though her voice was shaky. “But it’s working.”

Gabriel’s expression softened, his hand brushing her arm. “We’ll fight this. Together.”

Piper nodded, though her mind was racing. Noah’s accusation had hit harder than she wanted to admit. It wasn’t just the claim itself — it was the way it made her feel vulnerable, like she was under a microscope, her every move being scrutinized and twisted. And now, with Gabriel’s involvement, it felt even more personal.

Jasper approached from the other side of the hall, his face tense as he watched them. He had been quiet during the hearing, but now there was a storm brewing behind his eyes.

“We need to talk,” Jasper said, his gaze flicking to Gabriel for a brief second before landing on Piper.

Gabriel stepped back, giving them space, but his presence lingered. Piper could feel his watchful eyes, could sense the quiet tension between him and Jasper that had been growing since Gabriel entered her life.

“What’s going on?” Piper asked, her heart still pounding from the hearing.

Jasper ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident in his posture. “Noah’s lawyer knows too much. He’s not just making random accusations — he’s got information on you and Gabriel that he shouldn’t have.”

“What are you saying?” Piper’s stomach twisted.

Jasper’s eyes darkened. “I’m saying someone’s feeding him information. Someone close to you.”

The air between them thickened. “You think Gabriel —”

Jasper’s voice was low, filled with a protective edge. “I’m saying you need to be careful, Piper. We don’t know everything about him.”

Piper swallowed hard, the weight of Jasper’s words settling over her. She wanted to deny it, to tell Jasper he was wrong. But the truth was, she didn’t know everything about Gabriel. She didn’t know what his life had been like before he showed up, offering her support and stability when she needed it most. And that left a shadow of doubt.

“Look,” Jasper continued, his voice softer now. “I know things have been complicated between us, but I’m here for you. Always.”

Piper felt the pull between them — the familiar warmth of someone who had known her for so long, who had been there through the best and worst moments of her life. But there was a distance now, too — a distance created by time, by mistakes, by the simple fact that their lives had grown in different directions.

And then there was Gabriel.

Piper glanced over at him, standing just a few feet away, his gaze still locked on her. He was a newer presence in her life, but there was something undeniable between them — a connection that had grown stronger with each passing day. But now, with Jasper’s words ringing in her ears, she couldn’t help but wonder if that connection was as solid as she had believed.

The judge called them back into the courtroom, interrupting her spiraling thoughts. There was no time to process, no time to sort through the tangled mess of emotions and suspicions swirling in her head. She had to focus on the fight ahead — the fight for Lily.

As they returned to their seats, Piper’s mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. Gabriel’s hand brushed hers as they sat down, a gesture of support that sent a wave of warmth through her. But Jasper’s warning lingered, casting a shadow over her thoughts.

The hearing continued, but Piper was only half-present, her mind caught between the battle in the courtroom and the battle within herself. Noah’s lies, Gabriel’s unknown past, Jasper’s resurfacing feelings — it was all too much. And as the hours dragged on, Piper realized something terrifying.

She wasn’t just fighting Noah anymore.

She was fighting to trust herself.

As the day came to a close, the judge announced that a ruling would be made in the next few days. The hearing was over, but the battle was far from finished.

Outside the courthouse, the tension between Gabriel and Jasper was palpable, an invisible line drawn between them as they both stood near Piper, waiting for her to decide where she would turn.

“Do you want a ride home?” Gabriel asked, his voice soft, though his eyes flicked to Jasper with a quiet challenge.

Piper hesitated, her heart torn between the two men who had both become so deeply entangled in her life. Gabriel had been her rock, her source of strength through the chaos. But Jasper had always been there, a part of her history that she couldn’t ignore.

Before she could answer, her phone buzzed with a message. Piper pulled it out, her breath catching in her throat as she read the words.

Unknown: I know your secrets, Piper. And I’m going to destroy everything you’ve built.

Piper’s blood ran cold as she stared at the screen, her heart pounding in her chest.

The battle was far from over.
