The Lies That Binds

Between Two Worlds

Ch. 59 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper woke up the next morning with a heaviness in her chest that wasn’t entirely from lack of sleep. The sun filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across the room, but the brightness felt out of place in the world she inhabited now — one full of emotional chaos, lingering danger, and unanswered questions.

Lily was safe in her room, but Piper couldn’t shake the feeling that it was a temporary reprieve. The temporary custody ruling had been a victory, but only a fragile one. And it was clear that Noah wasn’t finished yet. Piper had felt his presence, the eerie calmness that followed him like a shadow, even in the courtroom. Despite the judge’s ruling, she knew he would never stop fighting, and that left her on edge, waiting for the next strike.

She also couldn’t ignore the tension that was building between Gabriel and Jasper. Their rivalry, once subtle, had started to bubble to the surface. Both men were fighting for her attention, her trust, and her heart. And the weight of their expectations made it difficult for Piper to see clearly.

As she made her way downstairs, the smell of coffee filled the air. Gabriel was already there, seated at the kitchen table with his phone in hand. He looked up as she entered, offering her a soft smile.

“Good morning,” he said, his tone gentle.

“Morning,” Piper replied, trying to sound as casual as possible, but the knot in her stomach remained.

Gabriel stood and poured her a cup of coffee, handing it to her with the same warmth he’d shown ever since the beginning of their strange, intense connection. Piper accepted it gratefully, wrapping her hands around the mug as if the warmth could melt the anxiety swirling inside her.

“Any news?” Piper asked, glancing at his phone.

Gabriel shook his head. “Nothing yet. I’ve got a few contacts keeping an eye on Noah, but he’s been quiet since the hearing.”

“That’s what worries me,” Piper muttered, taking a sip of her coffee. “He’s never quiet. Not for long.”

Gabriel studied her for a moment, his gaze filled with concern. “You’re still thinking about what’s next, aren’t you?”

Piper nodded, her throat tight. “I can’t shake the feeling that this isn’t over. I know I have temporary custody of Lily, but Noah’s not going to give up. And I can’t help but wonder if he’s got something else up his sleeve.”

Gabriel reached out, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. “We’ll deal with it when the time comes. For now, focus on rebuilding your life with Lily. You’ve won this battle, Piper. Take a moment to breathe.”

She wanted to believe him. Gabriel had always been a calming presence, his strength something she had come to rely on more than she’d realized. But the uncertainty gnawed at her, the constant fear that Noah would find another way to take Lily from her, or worse — put them both in danger again.

Before she could respond, the doorbell rang, startling both of them. Piper tensed, her pulse quickening as she set down her mug.

Gabriel’s expression darkened, his instincts kicking in as he moved toward the door. “I’ll get it.”

Piper followed him, her anxiety rising as the possibilities raced through her mind. Who could it be this early in the morning? Moreno’s men? Noah?

Gabriel opened the door, and Piper’s heart skipped a beat when she saw Jasper standing there. He looked tired, the weight of everything they had been through evident in the lines on his face. But there was also a sense of determination in his eyes, a fire that Piper hadn’t seen in a while.

“Hey,” Jasper said, his voice gruff but not unkind. “I wanted to check on you.”

Piper glanced at Gabriel, who stood to the side, his jaw clenched, but he said nothing. The tension between the two men was palpable, and Piper could feel it like a physical force. She took a step forward, trying to defuse the moment.

“Come in,” Piper said, offering Jasper a tentative smile. “I was just making coffee.”

Jasper hesitated for a moment, his eyes flicking to Gabriel, but then he nodded and stepped inside. Piper closed the door behind him, her heart pounding as the air in the room grew even thicker.

They moved into the kitchen, the silence between the three of them hanging like a storm cloud. Piper could feel Gabriel’s presence behind her, steady but tense, while Jasper stood on the other side of the counter, watching her with an intensity that made her chest tighten.

“How’s Lily?” Jasper asked, breaking the silence.

“She’s good,” Piper said softly. “She’s still sleeping. I’m trying to keep things as normal as possible for her, but... you know.”

Jasper nodded, his expression softening as he leaned against the counter. “I just want to make sure you’re both okay. After everything, I know it’s not easy.”

Piper met his gaze, and for a moment, she felt the weight of their shared history settle between them. Jasper had always been a protector, always willing to fight for her and Lily, even when things between them had fallen apart. And though their relationship had been strained, there was still something there — a connection she couldn’t ignore, no matter how much time had passed.

“I appreciate that,” Piper said, her voice quiet. “But we’re managing. Gabriel’s been helping a lot.”

At the mention of Gabriel’s name, Jasper’s eyes flicked toward him, a flash of something unreadable crossing his face. Piper knew what he was thinking, even if he didn’t say it. He had noticed how close she and Gabriel had become, how much she had come to rely on him. And though Jasper hadn’t said anything outright, the jealousy was there, simmering beneath the surface.

“I can see that,” Jasper said, his tone carefully neutral. “But if you ever need anything, you know where to find me.”

The tension was becoming unbearable, and Piper could feel the weight of her emotions pulling her in different directions. She was torn between the steady, reliable presence of Gabriel and the deep-rooted connection she still felt with Jasper. The push and pull between them was exhausting, and Piper didn’t know how much longer she could handle it.

“I don’t want to keep you,” Jasper said, sensing the tension. “I just wanted to make sure you were all right.”

Piper hesitated, wanting to say more but unsure of how to navigate the emotional minefield she found herself in. She nodded instead, offering him a small smile. “Thanks, Jasper.”

He returned the smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. As he turned to leave, Gabriel’s voice broke the silence.

“Jasper.”

Jasper paused, turning to face him, his expression unreadable.

“Thanks for stopping by,” Gabriel said, his tone polite but laced with an undercurrent of tension. “But Piper’s got enough on her plate without —”

“Without what?” Jasper interrupted, his voice hardening. “Without me checking in on my family?”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened, and Piper stepped forward, her heart racing. “Stop. Both of you.”

She couldn’t handle this right now. The rivalry between them was spiraling out of control, and Piper felt like she was stuck in the middle, torn between two forces she couldn’t reconcile. She needed both of them in different ways, but the emotional tug-of-war was becoming too much to bear.

“This isn’t helping,” Piper said, her voice trembling. “I’m already trying to keep it together, and this —” She gestured between the two men. “This isn’t making it easier.”

Jasper’s expression softened, the anger fading from his eyes. “I’m sorry, Piper. I didn’t mean to make things harder for you.”

Gabriel remained silent, but Piper could see the tension in his shoulders, the way he was holding back. He wasn’t the type to let his emotions get the best of him, but even he had his limits.

“I just need time to think,” Piper said, her voice shaky. “I need space to figure out what’s best for Lily.”

Jasper nodded, though the hurt in his eyes was unmistakable. “Of course. Just... let me know if you need anything.”

He gave her one last look before turning and walking out the door, leaving Piper standing in the kitchen with Gabriel, the silence heavy between them.

After a long moment, Gabriel spoke, his voice low. “You’re torn, aren’t you?”

Piper’s throat tightened, her heart aching with the truth she couldn’t deny. “I don’t know what I’m feeling.”

Gabriel stepped closer, his hand gently brushing hers. “I’m not asking you to choose right now. But I need you to know that I’m here for you. Whatever happens.”

Piper’s breath caught, the weight of her emotions crashing over her like a wave. She appreciated Gabriel’s steady presence, but her heart was a tangled mess, pulled in too many directions at once.

“I know,” Piper whispered. “I just need time.”

Gabriel nodded, his eyes softening as he took a step back. “Take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere.”

Piper watched him for a moment, her heart heavy with the knowledge that the choice she had to make wouldn’t just affect her — it would change everything.

As Gabriel turned to leave, Piper felt the pull of uncertainty settle deep inside her. She was standing at a crossroads, and no matter which path she chose, there would be no turning back.
