Kai POV
Kaden convinced me to pull my nose away from my phone after Tish's location showed that she was at the bar. Normally, Kaden and I would be doing pack work but since we can't seem to focus on anything but Tish, we are taking the day off.
Macy is sitting on the floor whispering with Nyx, while I flip through the channels. She is brushing her doll's hair and having an argument. I try to tune out Macy's conversation with Nyx but her voice is getting a little louder.
"What's a witch?" Macy finally asks.
I am not sure if she is talking to Nyx or to me, so I don't answer right away. She gets to her feet and smooths her hands down her dress and stands right I front of me. "What is a witch?"
"Why do you want to know what witch is?" Kaden asks her.
"Nyx said that is where Mommy is going," Macy replies.
Kaden and I share a look. Neither one of us is sure how to answer that question.
"A witch is someone that can do magic," Kaden gives her the simplest answer possible.
"Oh," Macy says. She flops back down onto the floor and continues to play with her doll.
'Check her location,' Kaden whispers through the mind link.
I pull out my phone, and my heart drops instantly. Tish is on the move. She is heading toward the edge of South Pack territory. The bar is one thing. It is in a rough location, but the people there love her, and we know she will be protected. But the direction where she is headed is dangerous.
I toss my phone in Kaden's direction, and his reaction is much like mine. He heads out of the living room, mumbling cuss words under his breath. Taking a deep breath, I slide onto the floor beside Macy. "Can I talk to Nyx?"
Macy's eyes get a little glossy, and she nods her head.
"Why is Mommy going to a witch?" I ask her.
"It is a secret," Macy says in a voice that isn't quite her own.
"Do you know the secret?" I ask her.
Macy nods her head and turns her attention back to the doll in her hands. "Mommy is sad."
"Sad?" I whisper.
"She wants to be like us," Macy says. "She wants to be a werewolf."
"Fuck," I growl. That is why she has been acting so strange. She has been trying to figure out how to become a werewolf. I don't even think that is possible.
Macy looks up at me and narrows her eyebrows at me. "That was a bad word. You said I couldn't say that word."
"Sorry, Munchkin," I mumble before placing a kiss on her forehead.
Kaden returns with our Beta Nicholas and his mate Lila. "Watch Macy," he instructs them. "Don't let Nyx boss you around."
Macy giggles at the sound of Nyx's name, and I just know that she is going to be trouble.
"I mean it, Macy," I tell her. "This is serious."
"Are you going to rescue Mommy from the bad woman?" Macy asks.
"The witch is bad?" Kaden growls.
"She wears a mask," Macy says.
Kaden and I kiss Macy on top of her head and begin to head for the door. Lila looks like she might throw up. I know Macy and Nyx make her uncomfortable. She tries to plaster a fake smile on her face, but she is failing.
"She is just a regular three year old," I remind her.
Lila swallows hard and sits down next to Macy. She begins to ask her questions about her doll, and Macy answers them cheerfully. Beta Nicholas seems to be relaxed as he watches them play together.
"Go get your mate," he says.
Kaden and I rush from the pack house and jump into our SUV. "Where are we going first?" I ask.
"To the bar," Kaden growls. "That fucker Jason knows something."
"That feels like a waste of time," I counter. "We already know why she is looking for a witch. I doubt Nyx is wrong."
The tires kick up gravel when Kaden hammers the gas pedal and peels out of the driveway. I keep my eyes glued to my phone and watch the dot on the screen. It is getting closer and closer to the edge of South Pack territory. Kaden turns down the road to the bar and I try to grab the steering wheel. "We need to go to Tish's location. She is approaching the edge of our territory."
Kaden rips my phone from my hands and his growl vibrates the inside of the car. He throws my phone back at me and flips a U-turn in the middle of traffic. Cars swerve out of the way and car horns blare loudly. Kaden throws the middle finger up at the cars behind us before racing down the road.
He is weaving in and out of traffic, and I am honestly a little scared. I have never seen Kaden drive this way before. Usually, it is me putting our lives in danger.
The buildings on the side of the road become few and far between. Each one becomes more dilapidated than the last. The thought of Tish being in a place like this makes me feel sick.
I glance down at my phone and see that Tish's location has finally come to a stop, just outside of South Pack territory. "She stopped in rogue territory."
"I don't care," Kaden growls. "I will kill anyone who comes in my way."
Kaden turns down a small dirt road, and clouds block out the sun. Even thought it is still early in the evening it looks as if it is night fall. A strange feeling creeps up my spine and everything in my body is telling me to leave this place.
Kaden's knuckles are white against the steering wheel. "Do you feel it, too?" I ask him.
"We are not turning back," he says through gritted teeth.
Suddenly, the engine of the SUV makes a terrible grinding noise and it comes to a halt. Kaden turns the key and the engine doesn't roll over. He punches the dash of the car and his fist goes through it. When he pulls his hand out, it is seeping with blood. I watch carefully, waiting for his wolf to heal him, but it doesn't happen.
"I don't think our wolves have any power here," I mutter.
Kaden rips off a piece of his shirt and wraps his hand, before getting out of the car. I take a deep breath and exit with him. I squint my eyes through the darkness and see a small light flickering in the distance.
"Here goes nothing," I mutter as I make my way down the narrow dirt road.
