Winston POV
I wait patiently in my room until the pack house is quiet. I pretended not to be interested in dinner and avoided Edward for most of the afternoon. He wants me to stay away from Macy, but I don't have the strength. I want her so desperately that the marks on my arm itch with anticipation. She can push me away all she wants, but I refuse to give up. She is going to love me. I will make sure of it.
It is past midnight, and I slip from my bedroom. The hallway is dark, and I let out a sigh of relief. No one will see me sneak into her room. I am about to knock on her door when I hear a growl behind me. I roll my eyes in frustration. I already know it is Edward.
"What are you doing?" He snaps at me.
"I am going to see Macy," I hiss at him. "I am not going to stay away from her. I don't want to, and I know you don't want to either."
"You heard her," he whispers. "She doesn't want us."
"You are stupid," I whisper back. "If she didn't want us, the bond wouldn't have started to form."
"There is no bond, you idiot," he snarls. "Just some stupid markings put there by magic."
"You are just as stubborn as she is," I raise my voice. "If you don't want to be here, then go back to your room."
"And let you have her all to yourself?" He scoffs.
"You don't want her," I shout.
"I never said that," he shouts back.
"I am going to punch you in the face now," I growl at him.
"Fuck you," he spits at me. "You aren't going to…"
My fist collides with the side of his face before he can finish his sentence. His head snaps to the side, and blood flies from his mouth. My knuckles are throbbing from the impact of the hit, but I don't care; it only fuels my anger.
Edward looks back at me and wipes the blood from his chin. His eyes darken slightly, and he shakes his head in frustration. "You are going to fight me over a girl?"
"Yes," I say as I rear back my hand to hit him again.
This time, he is faster than I am and dodges my punch. He tackles me to the ground, and we roll around the hallway. Both of us are trying to land punches while we can. We have forgotten that it is the middle of the night, and our snarls are filling the silent pack house.
"You are a selfish bastard," I scream as I flip him over onto his back.
"And you are a blind idiot," he shouts back at me.
Macy's door flies open, and she is standing in a fluffy robe with a silver wolf stuffed animal cuddled to her chest. "What in the hell is going on out here?"
I suddenly realize the hallway is filled with people watching my brother and me fight. After slamming Edward into the ground one final time, I climb off of him and wipe the blood off my face. It is hard to tell who it belongs to, but it isn't like it matters. My face is busted, and so is Edward's. I flex my hands by my side, and they feel stiff.
"What have you done now?" Mom's voice comes from the end of the hallway.
I don't look in her direction. I keep my eyes on Macy. She lets out a frustrated sigh and opens her door wide enough for me to pass through. Edward pushes his way into her room, and I follow him. Macy slams the door and flips the lock before anyone else has a chance to come inside.
I can smell Mom's scent right outside of the door, and we all wait for her to knock, but she doesn't. When her scent fades away, Macy disappears into her bathroom.
Edward and I are glaring at each other. Neither one of us is sorry about what happened in the hallway. Both of us will die thinking we are right.
"Sit," Macy says from her bathroom doorway.
We sit on her bed and cross our arms over our chests, refusing to look at each other. Macy tosses wet rags at our faces and picks her stuffed animal back up. She sits on the floor in front of us and waits for us to say something. Neither of us have plans to speak.
"Who wants to start?" She finally breaks the silence.
"Why do you have a wolf stuffed animal?" Edward asks.
"Because I like it," she spits at him.
"We were fighting over you," I say, wiping the blood from my face.
"Oh," she replies. "I don't want to come between you. I don't know what it is like to have a sibling, but I know family is important."
"That's not the response I was expecting," Edward says honestly. "Most girls try to get us to fight over them. It's like a game to them."
"It's not a game to me," Macy says, pulling at the fur of her stuffed animal.
Her blue eyes are wide, and she is looking up at us through her dark eyelashes. She is so beautiful; I don't know how she didn't have men lining up to be with her. Then I remember Edward and I painted a large target on her when she was younger. She didn't deserve that.
"Where do we go from here?" I ask the hard question out loud.
Macy hugs the stuffed animal closer to her chest and shrugs her shoulders. "Nyx says I need to be nicer."
Edward snorts with laughter, but I elbow him in the side. 'She is trying,' I hiss through the mind link. 'We should be, too.'
Macy gets up from the floor and looks at us both. "We can figure it out in the morning," she sighs. "I am tired."
Neither Edward nor I move from her bed. I don't want to leave her room, and I am sure Edward doesn't either. Luckily for me, Edward makes the first move. He climbs into her bed and pulls the covers back.
She shifts from foot to foot before glancing at me. "Are you staying too?"
I scoop her into my arms and lie her on the bed. She scoots over closer to Edward to make room for me. Edward is pulling at the ties on her robe, and she smacks his hands away.
"You aren't sleeping in that," he groans. "It is too hot."
"I sleep nude," she responds shyly.
Edward continues to pull at the robe. "We will survive."
He finally manages to get her out of it and tosses it onto the floor. "We are sleeping," she says, making her intentions very clear.
"Yeah, yeah," Edward groans.
