Angel’s POV
I had thought of the question of why he wouldn’t reveal his face to me, and I worked out three assumptions.
Yes, if he forced me to stay here and become his mate, I would try every possible way to escape.
But he didn’t even reveal his face to me, which made me super curious. I was determined to at least see his face before deciding whether I should leave or not.
Now, a perfect chance to verify the three assumptions presented itself to me.
I would figure it out this day!
I walked to him so that I could see him more clearly. This way, I could tell whether he lied.
His whole body and face could not be seen in the darkness, except for his eyes.
I stared at his eyes fixedly because I could only learn more about him from his eyes, but he seemed to be good at concealing his thoughts and emotions. His eyes were invariably calm and unfathomable.
There seemed to be magic in his eyes. Soon, I was hypnotized by him and forgot my original motive.
All I wanted to do was to stare at his brown eyes, which seemed even brighter than usual. Every time his eyelashes fluttered, it felt like my heartstrings were pulled.
“Angel, I don’t want you to see my face and you’ll know the reason later.” After a long silence, he finally spoke.
“Are you … bad-looking?” I asked tentatively.
“Of course, no!” he rebutted me loudly.
Fine, that possibility was ruled out.
“Do you hate me or despise me?” was my second assumption.
He looked at me with his eyes wide open and his mouth agape. Even his breath was accelerated. He seemed to be a little speechless at this question.
So he absolutely didn’t hate me.
“Does it have anything to do with you being the alpha?” That was my third assumption. Different packs might have different traditions. I was not sure if the Westford Pack had some weird traditions, like, the alpha couldn’t meet the Luna before the ceremony. It sounded odd, but that was the only possible explanation.
I looked at him closely, waiting for his reaction.
Well, his eyes were the same unfathomable. He didn’t answer me immediately. Instead, he just stood still and looked at me.
“If you still keep silent, I’ll assume it to be right.” I tried to keep my voice calm while my heart was racing. I had a feeling that I was getting closer to the truth.
He still looked at me in the same unfathomable way without saying anything.
“OK, I understand. Rest assured, I won’t try to take off your veil anymore,” I said.
The next second, I reached out my arms for him quickly.
He leaned sideways instinctively, trying to avoid me. But when his eyes met my eyes, he stopped his movement.
I put my hands in his hands and signaled him to hold my hands.
His eyes flashed with regret.
“You should trust me more. I’ve promised that I wouldn’t take off your veil. I won’t do that anymore,” I said to him as I looked him in the eye.
He held my hands tight. I could tell from his eyes that he was smiling.
“Sorry, it won’t happen again,” he said as he squeezed my palm a little bit.
I smiled at him and walked ahead. He also followed me since my hands were still in his hands. Early this morning, he pushed me away and rejected any physical contact. But now, he held my hands and refused to let go.
The lightning lit the small hut. A sly smile appeared at the corner of my lips.
“Where are you going?”
Nicholas asked when my hand was on the door.
“It’s too hot here. I want to open the door,” I said and opened the door.
He stood beside me and opened the umbrella.
The next second, I pulled away his umbrella and pushed him outside the hut.
Both of us fell to the ground, with me on top of him. He looked at me in confusion while I looked at him in amusement. He was so shocked that his lips were slightly parted, but he didn’t do or say anything.
“Angel…” he said as he covered his face with his hand.
But I stopped him immediately and said, “Nicholas, trust me. I won’t take off the veil. I’ve promised. Do you remember?”
Hearing my words, he also realized what I wanted to do. He put down his arms and closed his eyes.
Good.
I looked up at the sky and then looked down at his face.
I shrank a little bit so that his face was completely exposed to the rain.
As the rain fell, the black veil was soaked wet. It got more weight and stuck to his face, setting off his defined profile.
“Hold your breath for a minute, please!” I whispered to his ears.
He nodded slightly, with his expression unchanged.
I looked closely at his profile. His nose was delicate. His lips were thin but were beautiful in their own way and seemed quite soft.
The lightning struck again, and I could see his face more clearly.
Then was the rumbling of thunder.
He must be so damn hot under the veil.
I swallowed hard.
