Bound By Blood

Chapter 56

Ch. 56 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

The entrance to the crypts gaped beneath Blackthorn Manor like the maw of a beast, ancient and foreboding. The air turned colder with each step, chilling Ella to the bone. The spiral staircase wound downward, its smooth black marble walls veined with streaks of crimson that pulsed faintly, as if the crypts themselves were alive.

Lucien led the way, his lantern casting a dim glow ahead. Shadows leapt and twisted along the walls with each flicker. “The bloodstone pendant is at the heart of the crypt,” he said, his voice calm but grim. “Eloise won’t make this easy. These tunnels are steeped in her magic—and the manor’s.”

“Then we stay together,” Adrian commanded, his icy-blue eyes scanning the dark passage. His voice carried an unyielding edge as the bond between them all pulsed faintly, a fragile tether amid the oppressive gloom. “No one wanders off.”

Ella’s steps faltered as the weight of their shared tension settled heavily on her shoulders. The silence in the crypt was suffocating, broken only by the faint echo of their footsteps and the occasional drip of water. The air thickened, tinged with the metallic tang of blood and decay, filling her lungs with every shallow breath.

The first sign of Eloise’s presence came as a whisper—soft, melodic, and piercingly cold.

“You cannot stop me,” the voice echoed, curling through the tunnels like smoke. “This is my domain.”

The words sent a chill racing down Ella’s spine. She stopped abruptly, her head snapping toward the sound, but the shadows revealed nothing. The bond pulsed harder, amplifying her unease as she felt the brothers’ rising fear ripple through it.

The ground trembled beneath their feet, a deep, ominous vibration that set the crimson veins in the walls flickering. The marble seemed to groan, the oppressive magic pressing down on them.

“Adrian—” Ella began, but her words were drowned by the sudden shifting of the walls. The passage twisted and turned as if alive, reshaping itself into a jagged labyrinth.

“Stay close!” Adrian barked, his voice cutting through the panic as his hands crackled with raw energy. He turned sharply, scanning for threats, but the shifting mist began to rise, thick and cloying, obscuring their vision. It was like walking into a void.

Ella reached out instinctively, her trembling fingers brushing against Vincent’s arm. “Please, don’t let go,” she whispered, her voice thin and shaking.

“I won’t,” Vincent replied firmly, his grip tightening around her hand. His dark eyes locked onto hers, grounding her amid the chaos. “Just stay with me.”

Through the swirling mist, the whispering returned, louder this time, accompanied by faint, ghostly laughter. Eloise’s taunting voice echoed off the walls, sending chills rippling through the group.

“This is only the beginning,” she promised. “You’ll never escape.”

The mist thickened, and the sound of shuffling footsteps grew fainter. When the fog cleared moments later, Ella realized with a sinking feeling that the group had been separated. She and Vincent stood alone in a narrow tunnel, the others nowhere to be seen.

“Eloise,” Vincent muttered, his jaw tightening. “She’s trying to divide us.”

Ella nodded, her heart pounding. “We need to find the others.”

The bond flickered weakly, offering no guidance. As they moved forward, the tunnel narrowed, the walls pressing in uncomfortably close. The air grew colder, and every sound—every drip of water, every shift of stone—seemed amplified.

“Do you remember this place?” Ella asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Vincent’s gaze darted around the unfamiliar surroundings.

“Not like this,” he admitted. “The crypts weren’t this… alive before.”

They pressed on, their footsteps echoing ominously. Shadows flickered at the edges of their vision, moving too fluidly to be natural. Eloise’s voice whispered again, this time soft and intimate.

“He’ll fail you, just like before. He always hesitates when it matters most.”

“Do not listen to her,” Ella said quickly, squeezing Vincent’s hand.

His grip tightened. “I am not.”

But the bond betrayed his unease, his guilt flaring like a spark in the darkness. They turned a corner and froze. The tunnel ahead was blocked by a wall of shimmering darkness, the shadows writhing as if alive.

“She’s trying to trap us,” Ella murmured, her breath misting in the frigid air.

Vincent stepped forward, his magic flaring faintly as he pressed his hand against the barrier. The shadows recoiled briefly but did not dissipate.

“We’ll find another way,” he said, his voice steady but tense.

The alternative path led them deeper into the crypts, the air growing colder with every step. The bond between them pulsed stronger now, a lifeline in the suffocating dark. The close quarters made every brush of their arms, every accidental touch, feel amplified. Ella was acutely aware of Vincent’s presence—his warmth, his steady breathing, the faint tremor in his fingers.

When they paused to catch their breath, she turned to him. “Are you all right?”

He nodded, though his eyes betrayed his worry. “I’ll be fine. What about you?”

“I’m scared,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I trust you.”

The bond flared briefly, their emotions intertwining. Vincent reached out, his hand brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. “We’ll get through this,” he said, his voice low but firm.

Before she could respond, a chilling laugh echoed through the tunnel, sending a shiver down her spine. The shadows danced along the walls, forming vague, twisted shapes that seemed to mock them. Eloise’s presence was growing stronger.

“Keep moving,” Vincent said, his grip on her hand tightening.

Meanwhile, in another part of the crypts, Sebastian stood in the crypt’s shadowed corridor, his breath ragged as he faced yet another dead end. His golden eyes scanned the smooth, black marble walls, searching for any clue of a hidden passage. Around him, the air seemed alive with Eloise’s venomous whispers, each one an unrelenting assault on his psyche.

“You think you can outrun your failures?” her voice cooed, soft and mocking. “You think she’ll choose you, knowing what you’ve done?”

“Shut up,” Sebastian hissed, his voice a sharp whisper as his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

Eloise’s laughter echoed around him, cold and hollow, sending a shiver down his spine. The shadows seemed to move closer, coiling like serpents, and for a moment, Sebastian felt the weight of his regrets bearing down on him. But he wasn’t one to crumble.

Gritting his teeth, he forced himself to think. He remembered a hidden passage he had stumbled upon years ago during one of his aimless explorations of the manor—a forgotten route that might lead him around Eloise’s barriers.

Turning on his heel, Sebastian retraced his steps, his movements swift and purposeful. His mind focused on one goal: finding Ella and the others before it was too late. Eloise’s whispers followed him, their taunts digging into his skin like thorns, but he pushed them aside, refusing to let her break him.

Meanwhile, in another part of the crypts, Adrian faced an entirely different battle. The path ahead was blocked by shimmering spectral barriers, each one pulsating with Eloise’s dark magic. His icy-blue eyes burned with frustration as he raised his hands, summoning a surge of raw energy. With a guttural shout, he unleashed his power, shattering the first barrier into fragments of light that quickly dissolved into the air.

But the barriers kept coming, each one thicker and more oppressive than the last. Adrian’s magic crackled fiercely as he pressed forward, breaking through layer after layer of Eloise’s defenses. Each step felt like a battle, his anger and desperation fueling his relentless advance.

Through the bond, he could feel Ella’s fear, sharp and cutting, mingled with the warmth of Vincent’s presence. The proximity of their connection spiked his jealousy, sharpening his resolve. Adrian’s jaw clenched as he muttered under his breath, his voice raw. “Stay with me, Ella. I’m coming for you.”
