Zoya’s P.O.V
Immediately, he sobered up, but when I looked at him there were still hints of amusement on his face. Gosh, why was this so embarrassing to talk about?
I’m a grown woman and a doctor, on top of that! I shouldn’t be feeling embarrassed to talk about sex! But I did! Every time I saw Ezra’s face, I could clearly remember him on top of me, his face beaded with perspiration and the strong column of his exposed neck right on top of me.
He stood up from his chair and walked toward me.
Then he took me in his arms in a single swipe. I let out a surprised yelp, making sure to keep my mug upright so the liquid wouldn't spill.
He carried me to the living room, where he sat perpendicularly on the sofa, with me on his lap, sitting parallel to it. I cradled my mug in my hands.
"A mating dance primarily takes place when the wolf's mate is human," he continued, playing with my hair, "as wolves have the ability to accept or reject the mating bond instantaneously."
He buried his head into the crook of my neck, and I leaned toward him, wanting to get closer. "As for the mating dance, it is just a fancy word for the formation of a bond between a wolf and a human."
"I see…" I said, taking a sip of my coffee.
"I cannot read your thoughts," he assured me. "But I do now possess the ability to sense and decipher your emotions. It is through this emotional connection, born out of the mating bond, that I can perceive the depths of your innermost feelings."
I absorbed this newfound knowledge, a mixture of awe and trepidation swirled within me.
It came as a surprise to me how well I was taking all of this. Not two days ago, I was having a panic attack and being hysteric about how to accept the existence of the supernatural world. But now, I found it all to be interesting, and I wanted to learn more. I wanted to know everything there was to know about their world, and how it all intertwined with mine.
The prospect of such an intimate and intricate connection both exhilarated and terrified me.
I pondered the implications of this bond, imagining the depths of understanding and vulnerability it will unveil.
Ezra's warmth surrounded me as he continued to play with my hair, with me firmly on his lap. It felt almost unreal…this connection we shared. I hoped there would come a day when I too would be about to catch glimpses of his emotions, so I knew how he was feeling…how he truly felt about me.
I felt a glimmer of hope that, within the depths of this supernatural realm, I may find the solace and understanding that has eluded me in the human world.
“Ezra…what’s it truly like…to be mates?” I asked him with open curiosity. “I keep hearing about it, but…what does it really feel like?”
Ezra tilted his head to the side, musing. “How should I explain this simply?” He frowned. “Well…it’s kinda like…loving someone unconditionally; without expecting anything in return. It’s a beautiful bond and I wish you could get to experience it like any wolf does, but when you accept the bond, Zoya…you’ll see. It’s like something you’ve never felt before. Someone you can trust wholeheartedly without fearing that they will betray you.”
However, it was when Ezra told me about trusting someone wholeheartedly that a seed of doubt takes root in my heart.
I didn't believe him. How could that be true? How could anyone ever love me without conditions? Without me having to beg for all of it? How can I trust someone with my whole heart again after everything I had been through?
The scars of past betrayals in my life resurfaced, reminding me of the pain I endured when my former fiancé shattered my trust through infidelity.
I had believed that true love encompassed such unconditional devotion, only to be proven wrong.
With a hint of skepticism, I confided in Ezra, expressing my reservations."You know, I once believed love should be unconditional for everyone, yet my experiences have left me questioning the authenticity of such devotion."
I pressed my lips together, gathering my thoughts. "Time and time again, people have hurt me just because they can. All my life, I sought to be accepted, but even my own mother couldn't provide me the love I needed from her. And isn’t a mother’s love supposed to be unconditional?"
I looked him in the eyes, searching desperately for the truth. "How can I trust that your love won't falter, won't crumble under the weight of disappointment like my ex-fiancé's? Like my own mother?"
Ezra, his gaze filled with unwavering sincerity, reached out to take my hand gently in his. "Then allow me to show you, Zoya," he reassured me. "Rather than telling you about how much I can love you. Rather than telling you and promising you and showering you with flowery words…allow me to show you just how devoted I can be. Allow me to stay beside you and reassure you with my actions rather than words."
"I understand your skepticism, your hesitations born from past wounds…" He pressed a kiss to my cheek. "But I can promise you that my love is different, that it will endure unyieldingly."
"It will take time," he continued, "but I'll make you believe in my unwavering devotion, no matter how long it takes." The conviction in his voice resonated within me, stirring a flicker of hope within my weary heart.
As I gazed into his eyes, searching for the truth behind his words, I saw his sincerity reflected in their depths.
There was an unwavering strength in his presence, a steadfast determination to prove the depths of his love. And in that moment, a glimmer of faith began to flicker within me.
I lean closer to Ezra, cupping his cheeks and pulling him in for a soft kiss… I promised to myself that I will work on letting go of my skepticism, allowing myself to embrace the possibility of a love that defies my past experiences.
