The Lies That Binds

Chapter 171

Ch. 171 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The house was a hive of activity as Piper, Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah prepared for what was shaping up to be one of the riskiest operations they had ever undertaken. The clock was ticking, and every second that Anna remained in Marcus’s hands was another second too long.

Piper stood at the center of the living room, her hands gripping the edge of the table as she outlined their plan. Maps, photos, and handwritten notes were spread out before her, each detail meticulously arranged.

“We don’t have the luxury of waiting for a perfect opportunity,” Piper said, her voice firm but tinged with urgency. “Anna’s life is on the line. We go in tonight.”

Gabriel, seated beside her, nodded. “We’ve identified the location—an abandoned storage facility outside the city. Security is light, but that could change quickly if Marcus gets wind of our approach.”

Jasper leaned against the wall, arms crossed. “I’ve got contacts who can get us eyes inside. If Anna’s there, we’ll know before we go in blind.”

Piper turned to Noah, who was hunched over his laptop, typing furiously. “What about comms and surveillance?”

“I’m working on hacking into the facility’s security feed,” Noah replied without looking up. “If Marcus is using cameras to monitor the place, we can turn that against him. I’ll loop the feed to keep us off their radar.”

“Good,” Piper said, her gaze sweeping over the team. “We move as one. No mistakes, no unnecessary risks.”

Jasper smirked faintly. “I didn’t know you gave pep talks now.”

Piper shot him a look, her expression softening slightly. “Just don’t get cocky.”

Nightfall came quickly, cloaking the city in shadows as the team set out for the storage facility. Gabriel drove the lead car with Piper in the passenger seat, while Jasper and Noah followed in another vehicle packed with gear.

“Remember,” Gabriel said, his voice calm but authoritative, “this isn’t about taking down Marcus tonight. Our priority is Anna. Get her out, and get out clean.”

Piper nodded, though her stomach churned with a mix of fear and determination. “He won’t see us coming.”

The storage facility loomed ahead, its chain-link fence topped with rusted barbed wire. Jasper’s contact, a wiry man with a knack for slipping through security undetected, met them at the perimeter.

“Two guards patrolling the south entrance,” the man whispered, pointing toward the darkened area. “Cameras are set up along the west side. You’ll have about a five-minute window between their sweeps.”

Noah adjusted his earpiece, his fingers flying over his tablet as he took control of the facility’s camera system. “Looping the feed now. You’re clear to move.”

Gabriel led the way, his movements silent and calculated as he approached the south entrance. Jasper followed closely, his footsteps eerily quiet despite the gravel underfoot. Piper brought up the rear, her heart pounding as they slipped past the first guard, who was distracted by a cigarette.

Inside, the facility was a maze of metal shelves and narrow corridors. The air was damp and heavy, and the faint hum of machinery created a constant background noise.

“She’s in the southeast quadrant,” Noah’s voice came through the earpiece. “Second floor, storage room C. You’ve got three hostiles in the area.”

“Copy that,” Gabriel replied.

The team moved with precision, each step a carefully choreographed dance. Gabriel dispatched the first guard with a swift, silent takedown, while Jasper neutralized another with a well-placed strike. Piper stayed close, her focus unrelenting as they approached the storage room.

The door was locked, but Jasper produced a set of tools and worked quickly to pick it. Within moments, the lock clicked open, and Piper pushed the door inward.

“Anna,” she whispered, her voice breaking as she spotted her friend tied to a chair in the corner.

Anna’s head jerked up, her face pale but her eyes bright with recognition. “Piper?”

“It’s me,” Piper said, rushing to untie her. “We’re getting you out of here.”

Anna winced as the ropes fell away, her movements stiff. “They said you wouldn’t come. That you’d leave me.”

“Never,” Piper said fiercely, pulling Anna into a tight embrace.

“Not to rush you,” Gabriel said from the doorway, “but we’ve got company.”

The sound of heavy boots echoed down the corridor as Marcus’s men closed in. Gabriel and Jasper positioned themselves at the door, their weapons drawn as Piper helped Anna to her feet.

“Can you walk?” Piper asked.

Anna nodded, though her movements were unsteady. “I’ll manage.”

Noah’s voice crackled through the comms. “You’ve got a team heading your way—five, maybe six. I’ll try to slow them down.”

“Do it,” Gabriel said. “Piper, get her out of here.”

“I’m not leaving without you,” Piper said, her eyes blazing.

Gabriel met her gaze, his expression softening. “You won’t have to. Just go.”

Reluctantly, Piper guided Anna out of the room, keeping close as they navigated the narrow corridors. Behind them, the sound of gunfire erupted, sharp and deafening.

Piper’s heart raced as they rounded a corner and nearly collided with Noah, who was holding a small device in his hand.

“Detour,” he said breathlessly, gesturing to a side hallway. “I disabled their backup power. Should buy us a few minutes.”

“Where’s Jasper?” Piper asked.

“He’s holding the rear with Gabriel,” Noah replied, his eyes darting toward the distant sounds of the fight. “We need to keep moving.”

The group pressed on, the tension palpable as they neared the exit. But as they reached the main floor, a sudden explosion shook the building, throwing them off balance.

“What was that?” Piper shouted.

Noah grimaced. “Not me.”

They stumbled into the open air just as Gabriel and Jasper emerged from another corridor, both looking worse for wear but alive.

“Go!” Gabriel barked, his voice cutting through the chaos.

They sprinted toward the cars, Anna leaning heavily on Piper as the sounds of pursuit grew louder. Just as they reached the vehicles, a sharp crack echoed through the night.

Noah cried out, collapsing against the side of the car. Piper turned, horror flooding her as she saw the blood spreading across his side.

“Noah!” she screamed, dropping to her knees beside him.

“I’m fine,” he gasped, though his pale face and trembling hands betrayed the truth.

Gabriel and Jasper provided cover, their weapons trained on the approaching figures as Piper and Anna worked to get Noah into the car.

“We have to go now,” Gabriel said, his tone urgent.

Piper climbed into the back seat, cradling Noah’s head as Gabriel floored the gas pedal. The car sped away from the facility, leaving chaos and danger in its wake.

Back at the house, the atmosphere was grim as Gabriel carried Noah inside, his movements careful but swift. Jasper followed, his expression dark as he locked the doors behind them.

“Lay him on the couch,” Piper said, her voice trembling. “We need to stop the bleeding.”

Gabriel complied, his hands steady as he helped Piper apply pressure to the wound.

“You’re going to be okay,” Piper murmured, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked down at Noah.

He gave her a weak smile. “Didn’t know you cared so much.”

“Shut up,” she said, her voice breaking.

Jasper returned with a first aid kit, his usual bravado replaced by a grim determination. “I’ll call a friend. Discreet and trustworthy.”

Gabriel glanced at Piper. “We need to move quickly. If Marcus knows we’ve got Anna, he’ll retaliate.”

Piper nodded, her resolve hardening despite the fear clawing at her chest. “Let him try. We’ll be ready.”

As they worked to stabilize Noah and prepare for what came next, Piper felt a surge of gratitude—and guilt. They had saved Anna, but the cost had been steep.
