The Lies That Binds

Chapter 165

Ch. 165 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The man’s presence lingered in the house like a storm cloud, darkening everything it touched. Piper sat stiffly on the living room couch, her hands clasped tightly in her lap as Gabriel loomed nearby, his protective stance unmistakable. Across from her, the visitor—Nick Rowan, a name she had hoped to forget—leaned back with an air of casual menace.

“So,” Nick said, his voice smooth but with an edge that set Piper’s nerves alight. “You’ve done well for yourself. Nice house, charming little setup. Almost like you’ve got a whole new life.”

“It’s not your business,” Piper replied, her tone sharper than she intended. “Why are you here, Nick?”

Nick’s smile was a blade, cutting and precise. “Straight to the point. I always admired that about you.” He leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. “I need a favor.”

Gabriel crossed his arms, his gaze cold. “Whatever you’re looking for, she’s not your solution.”

Nick’s eyes flicked to Gabriel, his smile widening. “Ah, the knight in shining armor. Nice to meet you.” He turned back to Piper, ignoring Gabriel’s simmering glare. “This isn’t just about me, Piper. It’s about us. About the things we never settled.”

Piper’s heart clenched. The memories she had buried so carefully were clawing their way to the surface, dragging with them the pain and guilt she thought she had left behind.

“There is no ‘us,’” she said firmly, her voice trembling only slightly. “Whatever you think you’re owed, you’re wrong.”

Nick’s expression hardened, the mask of charm slipping. “Oh, I think you’ll find I’m not wrong. You left, Piper. You walked away and left the rest of us to pick up the pieces. Now it’s time to make things right.”

Gabriel stepped forward, his voice sharp. “If you think you can come in here and—”

Piper raised a hand, stopping him. She met Nick’s gaze, forcing herself to remain calm. “What do you want?”

Nick leaned back again, his demeanor shifting back to mockery. “It’s simple. You help me with a little... problem, and I walk away. Clean slate. No hard feelings.”

“And if I don’t?”

His smile disappeared entirely, replaced by something cold and threatening. “Then your perfect little life gets very messy, very fast.”

After Nick left, the house fell into a tense silence. Piper paced the living room, her mind racing as Gabriel watched her, his arms crossed and his jaw tight.

“Who is he, Piper?” Gabriel asked finally, his voice quiet but intense.

She stopped, her hands trembling as she turned to face him. “Someone I used to know. Someone I thought I’d never see again.”

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. “That’s not an answer.”

She took a deep breath, her chest tightening with the weight of what she was about to say. “Nick and I were... involved, a long time ago. It ended badly. He was controlling, manipulative. When I left, I thought I was done with him for good. But apparently, I was wrong.”

Gabriel’s expression softened slightly, but his tension remained. “And now he’s back, asking for a favor?”

She nodded. “He’s not the type to let things go. If he says he’ll make trouble, he means it.”

Gabriel stepped closer, his voice firm. “We’ll deal with him, together. Whatever he’s holding over you, we’ll find a way to stop him.”

Piper wanted to believe him, but the fear gnawing at her made it hard to breathe.

The next day, Piper gathered Jasper and Noah in the living room, her nerves fraying at the edges. She had decided that if they were going to get through this, everyone needed to know the truth.

“Nick Rowan,” she began, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. “He’s someone from my past, someone I’d hoped to never see again. He’s back, and he’s threatening to drag up old secrets unless I help him.”

Jasper frowned, his expression darkening. “What kind of secrets?”

Piper hesitated, glancing at Gabriel, who gave her a small nod of encouragement. “When I left Nick, I didn’t just walk away. I exposed him—to his friends, his family, his business associates. I showed them who he really was. And he’s never forgiven me for it.”

Noah leaned forward, his gaze sharp. “And now he wants payback.”

She nodded. “He’s demanding my help with some kind of deal. I don’t know all the details yet, but whatever it is, it’s not legal. And if I refuse...”

Jasper swore under his breath, his fists clenching. “Why didn’t you tell us this sooner?”

“Because I didn’t think I’d have to,” Piper said, her voice cracking. “I thought I’d left that part of my life behind.”

Gabriel stepped in, his tone calm but firm. “We’re not letting him control you, Piper. Whatever he’s planning, we’ll find a way to stop it.”

Noah nodded. “But we need a plan. If he’s willing to make good on his threats, we can’t just sit back and wait.”

Jasper glanced at Piper, his expression softening slightly. “You’re not in this alone. You’ve got us.”

For the first time since Nick’s arrival, Piper felt a flicker of hope.

The following days were a blur of strategy and tension. Noah dug into Nick’s recent activities, piecing together a web of shady dealings and criminal ties. Jasper shadowed Nick, gathering intel on his movements. Gabriel stayed close to Piper, his presence a constant source of comfort and strength.

But as they worked to neutralize the threat, the strain began to take its toll. Piper’s stress levels soared, her body struggling to keep up with the demands of both the situation and her pregnancy. She tried to push through, but her exhaustion was impossible to ignore.

One evening, as she sat on the edge of her bed, her hands resting on her growing belly, Gabriel knelt beside her, his expression filled with worry.

“You need to rest,” he said gently.

“I can’t,” Piper replied, her voice breaking. “Not with everything at stake.”

Gabriel reached for her hand, his touch warm and grounding. “You can’t help anyone if you run yourself into the ground. Let us handle this for a while.”

Tears welled in her eyes, but she nodded, too tired to argue.

The final confrontation with Nick came sooner than expected. Jasper tracked him to a secluded meeting spot, where he was finalizing the details of his latest scheme. The group moved quickly, cutting off his escape and cornering him before he could make his next move.

Nick’s bravado faltered as Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah closed in, their combined presence formidable. Piper stepped forward, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.

“It’s over, Nick,” she said. “Whatever power you think you have over me, it ends now.”

Nick sneered, but the fear in his eyes was unmistakable. “You think this changes anything? You’ll never be free of me.”

“We’ll see about that,” Gabriel said coldly.

Noah pulled out his phone, showing Nick the evidence they had gathered of his crimes. “This goes to the authorities unless you back off. Permanently.”

Nick’s facade crumbled, and he reluctantly agreed to their terms. As he slinked away, Piper felt a wave of relief, but it was short-lived.

Later that night, as the group regrouped at the house, Piper felt a sharp, sudden pain in her abdomen. She gasped, clutching the edge of the counter as her vision blurred.

“Piper?” Gabriel was at her side in an instant, his voice filled with alarm.

“It’s... the baby,” she managed, her breaths coming in short gasps.

Jasper and Noah rushed to help, their concern palpable as they carried her to the car. Gabriel held her hand tightly as they sped toward the hospital, his voice a steady anchor in the chaos.

“Stay with me, Piper,” he said, his eyes locked on hers. “We’ve got you.”

As they reached the emergency room, Piper felt the world tilt around her, the intensity of the moment crashing down like a tidal wave.
