The Lies That Binds

Chapter 186

Ch. 186 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The hotel's back entrance burst open, emergency lights casting harsh shadows across the service corridor. Piper stumbled through, one hand pressed against her cesarean incision, the other gripping Gabriel's arm. Each step sent waves of pain through her body.

"Ma'am, you need to stop," a nurse called from behind them. "You're risking internal bleeding-"

"Keep moving," Gabriel urged, supporting most of her weight. His other hand stayed near his concealed weapon.

They emerged into the cool night air. A black Mercedes idled in the loading zone, Noah at the wheel. Gabriel helped Piper into the back seat, scanning the area for Victor's men.

"Noah's locked down the main servers," Gabriel reported, sliding in beside her. "But Sarah's access codes are still active. They're already trying to get in."

Piper's fingers flew across her phone screen, muscle memory taking over despite the pain. "Call Marcus. Tell him to implement the Ghost Protocol. Now."

Gabriel's eyes widened. "Ghost Protocol? That'll shut down every system we have. Global operations, trading platforms, everything."

"Exactly." She hit send, her jaw set. "Better no access than compromised access. We have ten minutes before they realize what's happening."

The phone rang immediately - Noah's tech team. "Sarah's credentials are hitting the servers from multiple locations. They're moving fast, trying to download everything they can."

"Let them try." Piper's voice could have cut diamonds. "Marcus?"

"Protocol activated," Noah confirmed from the driver's seat. "The system went dark in three minutes. Backup servers in Singapore are ready."

Through the tinted windows, Piper watched Victor's security team burst from the hotel's main entrance. Their faces showed the moment their phones lit up with alerts.

"They know," Gabriel said quietly.

"Good." Piper allowed herself a small, fierce smile. "Now for phase two."

Her father's voice came through the car's speakers. "Package delivered to Singapore authorities. All documentation of Victor's offshore accounts, money laundering operations, everything. It'll hit the news cycle in an hour."

"Margaret?"

"I still think I'm in Hong Kong working on the merger. She has no idea we've been tracking her movements for months."

The Mercedes swerved suddenly onto a side street. In the rearview mirror, two black SUVs appeared, engines roaring.

"Company data?" Piper asked, gripping the door handle as Noah took another sharp turn.

"Migrating to the ghost servers now." Noah's voice was tight with concentration. "Sarah's codes are useless - she never knew about the shadow network we built after the last takeover attempt."

Relief flickered through Piper's exhaustion. At least that contingency plan had worked. Three years of secret server development, hidden even from the board.

"Victor's calling," Gabriel reported, holding up his phone.

"Put him on speaker."

"You bitch." Victor's voice shook with barely controlled rage. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"

"Protect my company? My family?" Piper's tone could have frozen hell itself. "Yes, Victor. I know exactly what I've done."

"Your mother-"

"I will be very interested in the evidence I just sent to federal prosecutors. About her dealings with Jasper's father. About you. About everything."

The silence stretched for several heartbeats.

"Want to discuss terms now?" Piper asked softly.

In the mirror, she watched the SUVs peel away, disappearing into the night traffic.

"You're making a mistake," Victor said finally. "This isn't over."

"Actually, it is." Noah's voice carried a rare note of satisfaction. "FBI's at your office, Victor. Something about international money laundering? Funny how those records surfaced."

Piper ended the call. Her hands were shaking, but she couldn't stop now. Couldn't let weakness show.

"Sarah?"

"In custody," Gabriel confirmed. "Her daughter's safe - we had a team waiting. They never actually had her."

"They forced her hand."

"Doesn't make it hurt less."

No, it didn't. Sarah had been more than an assistant. Five years of shared secrets, late nights, personal triumphs and failures. She'd held Piper's hand through the divorce, watched Lily grow from toddler to pre-teen. Had known exactly how Piper took her coffee and which days she needed an extra shot of espresso.

The betrayal felt like a physical wound, deeper than her surgical incision.

Piper's phone lit up with system notifications as their networks came back online. The ghost protocol had worked perfectly - all critical data secured, operations preserved, nothing compromised.

But the victory felt hollow.

"Your mother's calling," Gabriel said quietly.

Piper stared at the screen. Margaret Blackwood's face smiled up at her from the caller ID - the woman who'd raised her alone after her father's disappearance. Who'd taught her to be strong, to never show weakness, to always have a backup plan.

Who'd just tried to steal everything from her.

"Not yet," Piper whispered. "I can't..."

Gabriel squeezed her hand. "We should get you back to the hospital. You're pale."

She nodded, suddenly exhausted beyond words. They'd won this round, but the cost was still being tallied.

Her phone buzzed one final time. A text from Sarah:

"I'm sorry. But they weren't just threatening my daughter. Ask your mother about Project Phoenix. Ask her what really happened to your brother."

Piper's world tilted sideways.

She'd never had a brother.

Had she?

The message blinked on her screen, opening a door to questions she'd never thought to ask. What other lies had shaped her life? What other betrayals waited in the shadows of her past?

The Mercedes turned toward the hospital, carrying her back to her newborn son. But Piper's mind raced ahead, following dark paths into a history she suddenly realized she'd never really known.

Project Phoenix. A brother she couldn't remember. A mother she might never have truly known.
