The Lies That Binds

Chapter 174

Ch. 174 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The remnants of shattered glass and bullet holes had been cleared from the house by the time dawn broke, but the echoes of the previous night’s attack lingered. Piper stood by the new, reinforced window in the living room, staring out at the quiet street. It looked the same as ever, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that danger was lurking just out of sight.

Gabriel entered the room, a tablet in hand. “The security company’s sending their team over this afternoon. They’ll install additional cameras, motion sensors, and reinforced locks.”

“We need more than locks,” Piper said, her voice firm. “Whoever did this knew where to find us, and they knew exactly how to hit us where we’re vulnerable. This isn’t random.”

Gabriel nodded. “That’s why we’re taking this to the next level.”

By noon, the house had been transformed into a veritable fortress. A team of experts worked efficiently, installing state-of-the-art security systems both inside and out. Piper watched as they mounted infrared cameras at every angle, set up biometric locks on all entrances, and added hidden panic buttons in strategic locations.

Jasper arrived with supplies, his expression grim but focused. “Spoke to a buddy of mine who works in counter-surveillance. He’s setting us up with signal jammers and some high-tech toys to catch anyone trying to spy on us.”

“Good,” Piper said, crossing her arms. “I want to know everything about who’s watching us and why.”

Noah, still recovering but unwilling to sit idle, had turned the dining room into a command center. His laptop and monitors displayed live feeds from the new cameras, alongside maps and digital tools for tracking potential threats.

“I’ve also set up a program to scan for unusual activity around our accounts and communications,” Noah said, his voice tight with concentration. “If anyone tries to breach our systems again, we’ll know.”

“You sure you’re up for this?” Piper asked, concern flickering in her eyes.

“I’m fine,” Noah said, though the faint pallor in his face told a different story. “Besides, keeping us safe is better than lying around feeling useless.”

Piper placed a hand on his shoulder. “You’re not useless, Noah. Just... don’t push yourself too hard.”

He gave her a faint smile. “I won’t. Promise.”

As the day wore on, tension ran high. Piper moved through the house, checking on Lily, who was playing in her room, blissfully unaware of the gravity of the situation. Each time Piper saw her daughter’s smile, it reignited the fire in her to protect what mattered most.

Jasper joined her in the hallway, leaning against the doorframe. “You’re quiet,” he said, studying her.

“Just thinking,” Piper replied, her gaze distant.

“About last night?”

“About everything,” she admitted. “I thought we were finally starting to get a handle on this, and then someone takes a shot at me in my own home.”

Jasper’s expression hardened. “Whoever it was made a big mistake. Nobody comes after you or Lily and gets away with it.”

Piper looked at him, her eyes filled with determination. “We need to find out who’s behind this. I won’t let them turn our lives into a battlefield.”

By evening, the new security measures were fully operational. Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah joined Piper in the command room to go over their next steps.

“Our first priority is identifying the shooter,” Gabriel began, pointing to the screen where a map of the neighborhood was displayed. “We know they used the rooftop across the street, but they disappeared before we could catch them. The good news is, we’ve got footage from the cameras Jasper set up last month.”

Noah tapped on his keyboard, pulling up a grainy video. “There,” he said, zooming in on a figure climbing down a fire escape.

“Can you clean that up?” Piper asked.

“Already on it,” Noah said, running the footage through a program that enhanced the image. The figure’s face came into focus—a man in his late thirties, wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap.

“I know that guy,” Jasper said, his jaw tightening. “Name’s Rico. He’s a small-time enforcer, but he’s been known to do freelance work for bigger players.”

“Like Marcus?” Gabriel asked.

“Possibly,” Jasper replied. “But Rico’s not smart enough to plan something like this on his own. Someone hired him.”

“Then we need to find him,” Piper said.

Jasper smirked. “Leave that to me.”

Later that night, Piper paced the living room, her mind racing. The house felt like a fortress now, but it didn’t ease the tension coiled in her chest. The knowledge that someone wanted her dead—and had come terrifyingly close to succeeding—was impossible to ignore.

Gabriel entered, his presence grounding as always. “You should get some rest,” he said, his voice soft.

“I can’t,” she admitted. “Not until we know who’s behind this.”

He stepped closer, his hand brushing hers. “We’ll find them, Piper. And we’ll stop them.”

She nodded, her gaze meeting his. “Thank you—for everything.”

Before Gabriel could respond, the sound of Jasper’s car pulling into the driveway drew their attention. Moments later, Jasper strode inside, his expression triumphant.

“Got him,” he announced. “Rico’s holed up at a motel on the west side of town. And he’s alone.”

Gabriel grabbed his jacket. “Let’s go.”

The drive to the motel was tense, the silence in the car broken only by the occasional crackle of the police scanner Noah had rigged for them. When they arrived, Gabriel and Jasper moved with practiced precision, covering each other as they approached the door to Rico’s room.

Piper hung back, her heart pounding as she watched from the car. She hated feeling like a spectator, but she knew Gabriel and Jasper were better suited for this kind of confrontation.

Jasper knocked on the door, his tone casual but firm. “Room service.”

The sound of movement inside was followed by the door creaking open. Rico barely had time to react before Gabriel shoved him back into the room, slamming the door shut behind them.

“What the hell—” Rico started, but Jasper cut him off.

“Sit,” Jasper ordered, pointing to the rickety chair in the corner.

Gabriel stepped forward, his presence towering. “You’re going to tell us who hired you to take that shot, or things are going to get very unpleasant for you.”

Rico hesitated, his eyes darting between them. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Gabriel slammed his hand down on the table, making Rico jump. “Try again.”

“Okay, okay!” Rico stammered. “It was... it was Salvatore.”

Jasper’s eyes narrowed. “Salvatore Moretti?”

Rico nodded frantically. “Yeah. He said it was just business. Something about Piper stepping on their turf.”

Gabriel exchanged a look with Jasper, his expression grim. “Moretti was supposed to be an ally.”

“Guess not anymore,” Jasper said, his voice hard.

Piper entered the room, her gaze sharp. “Why now? Why turn on me after everything we’ve been through?”

Rico shrugged, his fear evident. “I don’t know. All I know is, he wants you gone. Permanently.”

The drive back to the house was heavy with unspoken tension. Rico’s revelation had shifted the game once again, forcing Piper to confront the fact that even her supposed allies could no longer be trusted.

As they pulled into the driveway, Piper turned to Gabriel and Jasper. “We need to hit back, and we need to do it fast. If Moretti thinks he can get away with this, he’s wrong.”

Gabriel nodded. “Agreed. But we’ll need a plan.”
