The Lies That Binds

Chapter 199

Ch. 199 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The Dorchester's presidential suite hummed with activity well past midnight. Piper had exchanged her evening gown for tailored loungewear, but her mind remained sharp as she studied the profiles displayed across multiple screens.

"The Global Innovation Consortium," Noah reported from his mobile command center. "Seven principal investors, combined assets exceeding two trillion dollars. But their real power isn't financial."

"Political influence?" Gabriel asked, jacket discarded, shoulder holster visible as he paced.

"Beyond that." Noah pulled up more data. "They've got hooks in everything - defense contracts, pharmaceutical research, technological development."

Alexander lounged in an armchair, still in his tuxedo but with the bow tie undone. "Perfect cover for continuing Project Phoenix's work."

Jasper's voice came through the secure video link from Singapore. "Their offer seems too convenient. Right after we expose the old programs?"

"It's not convenient," Piper said, studying one particular document. "It's evolution. They're adapting, trying to stay ahead of exposure."

Her phone buzzed - Emma forwarding the consortium's formal proposal. The numbers were staggering, even by their standards.

"They're offering full partnership," Gabriel noted, reading over her shoulder. "Equal voting rights, shared research facilities..."

"And complete autonomy in Asian markets," Noah added. "They want to expand west, not east."

Piper moved to the windows, looking out over nighttime London. "What's the catch?"

"Besides the obvious ethical concerns?" Alexander's laugh was bitter. "They want access to our enhanced genetics research."

The room went quiet. Project Phoenix's legacy - the biological modifications that had made Piper and Alexander more than human.

"No," she said firmly. "That research dies with us."

"Agreed," Gabriel moved to stand beside her. "But we might need their resources for what's coming."

"Margaret?" Jasper asked through the video link.

"And whatever she's building." Piper turned back to the room. "Set up the meetings. But carefully controlled, on our terms."

Noah's fingers flew across keyboards. "I can have full backgrounds on every consortium member by morning. Personal histories, financial records, genetic profiles..."

"Do it." Piper activated the main display, showing their global operations. "And track their connections to other Phoenix research sites. I want to know everything they're hiding."

"Location for the meetings?" Gabriel asked.

"Neutral ground." She highlighted a property in the countryside. "The Pembroke Estate. Old money, extremely private, excellent security sight lines."

Alexander smiled slightly. "Mother's childhood home. Interesting choice."

"She won't expect us to use it." Piper checked her phone - another message from the consortium, requesting an immediate private dinner.

"It's a trap," Gabriel said immediately.

"Obviously." She forwarded the invitation to Noah. "Get me everything at the restaurant. Every entrance, every employee, every possible angle."

"Already on it." His screens are filled with blueprints and security feeds. "The place is legitimate - Michelin stars, regular celebrity clientele. But..."

"But?"

"The owner's brother worked security for Project Phoenix facilities twenty years ago."

Piper nodded. "Perfect. Accept the invitation. Tonight."

"Piper..." Gabriel started.

"They're testing us," she cut him off. "Let's show them what we can do."

The next hours were a blur of preparation. Noah's team swept the restaurant while Gabriel coordinated security positions. Alexander would monitor from a nearby cafe, ready to intervene.

Piper dressed carefully - power suit in deep crimson, Phoenix colors. Subtle armor panels hidden beneath silk.

"Comms check," Noah's voice came through her discrete earpiece.

"Clear," she responded, adjusting her jewelry - each piece containing tracking devices and emergency beacons.

"Security teams in position," Gabriel reported. "Restaurant secured, all staff vetted."

"Lily?" she asked, mother's instinct never quiet.

"Safe with James at the Singapore compound," Jasper assured her. "Triple security, no unauthorized access."

The drive to the restaurant was tense but smooth. London's evening traffic parted before their motorcade like water.

Le Blanc occupied a historic building in Mayfair, old world luxury updated with modern elegance. The maitre d' led Piper to a private dining room where five consortium members waited.

"Mrs. Chen-Blackwood." Their leader - Dr. Elizabeth Carter, renowned geneticist - rose to greet her. "Thank you for joining us on such short notice."

Piper took her seat, noting positions, exits, sight lines. "How could I refuse such an intriguing invitation?"

Dinner proceeded with the usual corporate dance - small talk masking larger intentions, pleasantries hiding threats.

"Your speech tonight was... unexpected," Carter said as the main course arrived.

"Truth often is."

"Truth is relative." Another member - James Morrison, tech billionaire - leaned forward. "Your mother understood that."

"My mother understood power," Piper corrected. "I understand justice."

"Justice won't build the future," Carter argued. "Evolution will. Progress. Controlled enhancement of human potential."

"Like Project Phoenix?"

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

"Those methods were crude," Carter admitted. "We've evolved. With your help-"

Piper's phone buzzed. Singapore number - the children's nanny.

"Excuse me." She stood, moving slightly away from the table. "Yes?"

"Mrs. Chen-Blackwood." Maria's voice shook slightly. "I'm so sorry. Someone got past security. They're in the house."

The world narrowed to a laser point of focus.

"The children?"

"Safe. In the panic room with Mr. Jasper. But Mrs. Blackwood... it's your mother. She's here."

Piper's enhanced senses registered multiple changes: sudden tension in the consortium members, slight shifts in posture, hidden signals.

They knew.

"Now, Mrs. Chen-Blackwood," Carter said softly. "About that partnership..."

Through her earpiece, Noah's voice was tight with urgency: "Multiple breaches detected at the Singapore compound. They're not just after the children."

The game had shifted again.

But they'd forgotten one crucial detail:

A Phoenix always protects its nest.

"Gabriel," she subvocalized. "Execute Protocol Omega."
