The Lies That Binds

Chapter 187

Ch. 187 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The hospital room felt different now, less confining. Morning sun streamed through the windows as Piper held her son, breathing in his newborn scent. Two days had passed since the confrontation with Victor, but every hour brought new revelations about the depth of deception around her.

"His oxygen levels are perfect," the nurse reported, checking monitors. "You should be able to take him home tomorrow."

Home. The word has a new meaning now. Piper glanced at the stack of papers on her bedside table - property listings in Singapore, school recommendations for Lily, security assessments of potential residences.

Gabriel entered, carrying coffee and a tablet. "Board meeting's done. They've approved the relocation plans."

"Unanimous?"

"Two abstained. But no opposition." He handed her a coffee. "The Singapore expansion is officially greenlit."

Piper shifted the baby to one arm, accepting the cup with her free hand. "And the trust properties?"

"Your father's lawyers confirmed everything. Once you turn thirty-five next month, it all transfers to you." Gabriel sat beside her bed. "The manufacturing facilities alone are worth billions."

The baby stirred, and Piper adjusted his blanket. James Alexander Blackwood - named for her father, though she hadn't told her mother that yet. Hadn't spoken to Margaret at all since Victor revealed her betrayal.

"Noah's here," Gabriel said softly. "With the security proposals."

"Send him in."

Noah entered, looking tired but satisfied. "Final sweeps are done at the Singapore property. It's clean - no surveillance, no compromised systems."

"And Lily's school?"

"Top-tier security. Private campus, restricted access. I've vetted every staff member personally."

Piper nodded. After Sarah's betrayal, nothing could be left to chance.

"What about you?" she asked Noah. "Have you decided?"

He shifted, uncomfortable with the directness of the question. "If you still want me to head security for the Asia division..."

"I do." Piper met his eyes. "I trust you, Noah. That list is very short these days."

"What about Jasper?" Gabriel asked quietly.

The question hung in the air. Jasper - her ex-husband, Lily's father, a man caught between loyalty and survival.

"The prosecutors dropped the charges," Noah reported. "Our evidence about Victor's manipulation helped. He's clean."

"He wants to come too," Gabriel added. "Says he can run the Malaysian operations. Keep close to Lily."

Piper looked down at her son, so new to this complicated world they'd built. "What do you think?"

"I think..." Gabriel chose his words carefully. "Family is what we make it. Jasper's Lily's father. That makes him family, whatever else has happened."

Noah nodded agreement. "The four of us... we've been through too much to let pride get in the way now."

The baby gripped Piper's finger, his tiny hand anchoring her to the moment. To the future they were building.

"Have the papers drawn up," she decided. "Full relocation package for all of us. But with conditions - complete transparency, regular security audits, no private dealings."

"Already done." Noah handed her a folder. "I just need your signature."

Piper shifted James to Gabriel's arms - a motion that felt increasingly natural - and took the papers. As she read, her phone lit up with a text from Lily: "Did you ask him yet?"

Heat crept into her cheeks. Noah suddenly became very interested in his tablet.

"Ask me what?" Gabriel said, not missing anything.

Piper took a deep breath. This wasn't how she'd planned it, but nothing in their lives ever went according to plan.

"Marry me."

Gabriel's head snapped up. Noah dropped his tablet.

"What?"

"Marry me," Piper repeated. "Before we leave for Singapore. Make it official."

"Piper..." Gabriel looked at the baby in his arms, then back at her. "Are you sure? After everything-"

"I'm sure." She reached for his hand. "Life's messy. Family's complicated. But you... you're the constant. Through all of it."

Noah quietly headed for the door, giving them privacy.

"You don't have to answer now," Piper continued. "Take time-"

"Yes."

"What?"

Gabriel smiled, the rare, full smile few people ever saw. "Yes, I'll marry you. Here, Singapore, anywhere."

The baby chose that moment to cry, demanding attention. They laughed, the tension breaking.

"I'll get his bottle," Gabriel said, carefully transferring James back to Piper.

Her phone buzzed again - another text from Lily: "Did he say yes???"

Followed immediately by one from Jasper: "About time."

Even Noah had texted: "Congratulations. Security assessment for wedding venues has already started."

Piper smiled, holding her son close. This wasn't the family she'd imagined, but it was real. Solid. Built on trust earned through fire and betrayal.

The door opened again. A nurse entered, followed by her father.

"Everything okay?" James Sr. asked, taking in the scene.

"Better than okay." Piper gestured him closer. "Meet your grandson. James Alexander Blackwood."

Her father's eyes widened at the name. He reached for the baby with trembling hands.

"There's more," Piper said. "I'm marrying Gabriel. Before we leave for Singapore."

"Good." Her father didn't look up from his grandson's face. "He's a good man. The kind who stays."

The words hung heavy with meaning. With history.

Piper's phone lit up one last time. Margaret Blackwood.

This time, she answered.

"Hello, Mother."

"Piper." Her mother's voice was careful, controlled. "We need to talk about Project Phoenix."

"Yes," Piper agreed. "We do. About that, and about my brother."

Silence stretched between them.

"Come to dinner," Margaret said finally. "Bring Gabriel. And the baby."

"Why?"

"Because it's time you knew the truth. About everything."

Piper looked at her father, still cradling his grandson. At Gabriel, returning with a bottle. In the future they were building, even as the past unraveled.

"Tomorrow," she said. "But I'm bringing my whole family. No more secrets."

She ended the call before her mother could respond.

Tomorrow would bring new revelations, new challenges. But today - today was for this moment. For her son in her father's arms. For Gabriel's ring-less finger that wouldn't be empty much longer. For the family they'd chosen, complications and all.

Her phone buzzed again.

A message from an unknown number:

"Phoenix rises. Just like your brother did."
