The Lies That Binds

Chapter 164

Ch. 164 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper sat at the head of the dining table, her hands folded tightly in her lap. The hum of the ceiling fan above filled the silence, underscoring the weight in the air. She had thought of a thousand ways to break the news, rehearsing each one with varying degrees of success in her mind, but nothing felt right. Nothing could fully capture the enormity of what she was about to say.

Gabriel leaned against the kitchen counter, his sharp eyes watching her with quiet concern. Jasper and Noah sat opposite one another, their expressions unreadable, but the tension in their postures was telling. They all knew something was coming.

“Well?” Jasper said, his voice cutting through the quiet. “What’s this about, Piper?”

She hesitated, her fingers tightening around one another. Her voice, when it came, was soft but steady. “I’m pregnant.”

The words hung in the air like a thunderclap. Gabriel straightened, his brows furrowing in surprise, while Noah’s eyes widened slightly, his calm demeanor cracking for the first time. Jasper, ever the one to react first, pushed back in his chair, his expression a mix of shock and incredulity.

“What?” he said, the word sharp and full of emotion.

Piper forced herself to meet their gazes, one by one. “I found out a few days ago. I wanted to make sure before I said anything.”

“And... the father?” Noah asked carefully, though the underlying tension in his tone was impossible to miss.

Piper sighed, her chest tightening. “I don’t know.”

Another silence fell over the room, heavier than the first. Jasper muttered a curse under his breath, running a hand through his hair. Gabriel stepped forward, his gaze locked on Piper.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, his voice low but full of concern.

Piper blinked, caught off guard by the question. “I’m... okay. Just trying to process everything.”

Gabriel nodded, his expression softening slightly. “That’s what matters. We’ll figure the rest out.”

Jasper let out a bitter laugh, standing abruptly. “Figure it out? Are you serious? You don’t just ‘figure out’ something like this, Gabriel.”

“Jasper,” Noah said, his voice firm. “Let’s not turn this into a fight.”

“How can we not?” Jasper shot back, gesturing toward Piper. “She doesn’t even know who the father is, and we’re supposed to just—what? Play happy family?”

“Enough!” Piper’s voice rose, silencing them all. She stood, her heart pounding as she looked at them with a mixture of frustration and determination. “This isn’t about you. This is about the baby. And if you can’t put your egos aside long enough to deal with that, then maybe you shouldn’t be part of this conversation.”

The room fell into an uneasy quiet, the weight of her words sinking in. Jasper sat back down, his jaw clenched, while Gabriel exchanged a glance with Noah.

Piper took a deep breath, her voice softening. “I don’t have all the answers. But what I do know is that this baby didn’t ask to be part of this mess. They deserve a chance at a good life, and I need all of you to help make that happen.”

Jasper sighed, his shoulders slumping. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

Noah nodded, his expression thoughtful. “We’re here for you, Piper. All of us.”

Gabriel stepped closer, his voice steady. “Whatever you need, we’ll figure it out. Together.”

Piper felt a wave of emotion swell in her chest, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. “Thank you,” she said quietly, her voice thick with gratitude.

In the days that followed, the group began to navigate their new reality. Conversations were tense at times, but a shared sense of purpose kept them moving forward. Piper found herself leaning on Gabriel more than she expected; his steady presence and quiet support were a balm in the chaos.

Jasper, for all his initial resistance, began stepping up in small but meaningful ways—fixing things around the house, running errands, and even joining Piper for a doctor’s appointment when Gabriel was caught up in work. It wasn’t easy, but he was trying.

Noah, ever the problem-solver, took on the role of planner. He created schedules, researched parenting resources, and even started organizing the nursery. His calm, pragmatic approach provided a much-needed anchor.

Despite their efforts, the uncertainty of the baby’s paternity hung over them like a storm cloud. Piper tried to focus on the positives—their willingness to support her, the newfound harmony they were building—but the questions lingered in her mind, unspoken but always present.

One evening, as Piper sat on the porch with Gabriel, a rare moment of peace settled between them. The cool night air was a welcome relief from the day’s heat, and the sound of crickets filled the quiet.

“Do you ever think about what this will look like?” she asked, her voice soft.

Gabriel turned to her, his expression thoughtful. “What do you mean?”

“This,” she said, gesturing vaguely. “All of us. A baby. It’s... complicated.”

Gabriel nodded, his gaze distant for a moment. “It is. But life’s messy, Piper. What matters is that we’re all here, trying to make it work.”

She smiled faintly, leaning her head against his shoulder. “You make it sound so simple.”

“It’s not,” he said, his voice low. “But it’s worth it.”

The warmth of his words settled over her, easing some of the tension in her chest. For the first time in weeks, she allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, things would be okay.

The knock at the door came late the next night, sharp and unexpected. Piper, who had been reviewing notes for an upcoming meeting, frowned as she got up to answer it. Gabriel, sensing her unease, followed close behind.

She opened the door to find a man standing on the porch, his face half-hidden in the shadows. Recognition hit her like a punch to the gut, her breath catching in her throat.

“Hello, Piper,” the man said, his voice smooth but laced with something darker. “It’s been a long time.”

Gabriel stepped forward instinctively, his presence protective, but Piper held up a hand, her heart racing.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice trembling.

The man’s smile was cold. “We need to talk.”

The tension in the air was palpable, a storm brewing just beneath the surface. Piper glanced at Gabriel, whose eyes were hard and questioning, then back at the man who had once been a ghost in her life.

“Who is this?” Gabriel asked, his tone sharp.

Piper swallowed hard, her stomach twisting. “Someone I thought I’d never see again.”

The man’s smile widened, his eyes gleaming with something dangerous. “Oh, Piper. You didn’t think you could keep the past buried forever, did you?”
