The Lies That Binds

Chapter 180

Ch. 180 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The tension in the house was palpable the next morning. Piper sat at the kitchen table, the soft hum of Lily’s cartoons playing faintly in the background. She sipped her coffee, her thoughts consumed by the conversation from the night before.

Jasper’s revelation had hit her like a freight train. The expansion plans were precarious enough without the weight of potential legal scrutiny looming over them. Yet, beneath the frustration, there was a pang of sympathy. Jasper had always lived on the edge, his charm and street smarts often blurring the lines between right and wrong.

But now, those blurred lines could threaten everything.

“Morning,” Jasper’s voice broke her thoughts.

Piper glanced up as he entered the room, his hair disheveled, his expression wary. He didn’t meet her eyes as he poured himself a cup of coffee.

“Sit,” she said, her tone leaving no room for argument.

He sighed, leaning against the counter for a moment before finally pulling out a chair and sitting across from her.

“We need to talk,” Piper began, her voice firm but not unkind. “I need to know everything. No more half-truths, no more ‘it’s nothing major.’ If we’re going to deal with this, I need the full story.”

Jasper hesitated, his hands fidgeting with the mug in front of him.

“Jasper.”

“Okay,” he relented, running a hand through his hair. “Here’s the deal. After we took down Salvatore, some of his guys tried to come after me. They wanted revenge, sure, but they also wanted dirt on you. They thought I’d be the weak link.”

“Were you?” Piper’s voice was sharp, but her expression softened when she saw the flicker of guilt in his eyes.

“No,” he said quickly. “Not in the way you think. I didn’t give them anything on you. But I... I made some bad calls trying to throw them off. Small stuff—favor trades, deals that weren’t exactly above board. I thought I could outsmart them, keep them from getting too close.”

“And now?”

“And now,” Jasper sighed, “there’s an investigation. Some of it’s legit; some of it’s their guys stirring the pot, trying to keep the pressure on me. But if they dig deep enough, they might find ways to connect my mistakes to your company, even if it’s indirect.”

Piper’s chest tightened. “Do they have anything real?”

“Not yet,” Jasper said, though the hesitation in his voice was unmistakable. “But that doesn’t mean they won’t twist things to make it look that way.”

Piper leaned back, her mind racing. “This could derail everything, Jasper. The expansion, the move, my entire career—”

“I know,” he interrupted, his voice laced with frustration. “You think I don’t know that? I didn’t want to drag you into this, but I couldn’t keep it quiet anymore.”

She studied him for a long moment, torn between anger and understanding.

“Okay,” she said finally. “We deal with it. But you need to follow my lead. No more playing games, no more trying to fix things on your own. Understood?”

Jasper nodded, his jaw tight. “Understood.”

Over the next few days, Piper worked tirelessly to address the potential fallout. She assembled her legal team, briefed them on the situation, and emphasized the need for discretion.

Gabriel stepped in as her liaison, coordinating between her lawyers and Jasper to ensure every angle was covered. His steady demeanor was a stark contrast to Jasper’s bristling frustration, but the two men managed to keep things civil for Piper’s sake.

Noah, meanwhile, dove into the technical side of things, scouring records and securing company files to ensure there were no vulnerabilities that could be exploited.

“I found a few loose ends,” he told Piper one evening, his laptop open on the coffee table. “Nothing major, but they could be twisted out of context if someone’s determined enough.”

“Fix them,” Piper said firmly. “And keep looking.”

Noah nodded, his fingers flying over the keyboard.

Jasper, for his part, spent hours in meetings with Piper’s legal team, answering their questions and providing documentation. His usual bravado was gone, replaced by a quiet determination to make things right.

“I’m not letting this ruin you, Pipes,” he said one evening as they sat in her office. “I screwed up, and I’ll fix it. Whatever it takes.”

Piper looked at him, her expression softening. “I know you will. But this isn’t just about fixing it. We need to get ahead of it, control the narrative before someone else does.”

Despite their best efforts, the investigation refused to stay under wraps.

It started with whispers—rumors circulating in the business community, vague enough to dismiss but persistent enough to cause concern. Then, a local news outlet published a story:

“INSIDE SOURCES: INVESTIGATION INTO CLOSE BLACKWOOD ASSOCIATE UNDERWAY.”

The headline was vague, the details sparse, but the implications were damning. The article hinted at financial improprieties and suggested that Piper’s company might be entangled in the investigation.

The fallout was immediate. Piper’s phone buzzed with calls from concerned investors, her inbox flooded with requests for statements. The timing couldn’t have been worse, with the Paris expansion plans already under scrutiny.

“What do we do?” Noah asked, his expression tense as he skimmed the article.

“We get ahead of it,” Piper said, her voice steady despite the storm brewing inside her. “Gabriel, reach out to our PR team. I want a statement drafted immediately—something that acknowledges the investigation but distances the company from it.”

Gabriel nodded, already pulling out his phone.

“And Jasper,” Piper continued, turning to him. “You need to stay out of the spotlight. No interviews, no public appearances, nothing. Understood?”

“Yeah,” Jasper said, his tone subdued. “Understood.”

By the end of the day, the story had gained traction, picked up by national outlets and amplified on social media. Piper’s carefully crafted statement helped mitigate some of the damage, but the questions kept coming.

Reporters camped outside her office, eager for any scrap of information. Competitors seized the opportunity to cast doubt on her company’s credibility, and even a few investors began to waver.

Through it all, Piper remained calm, her determination unshaken.

“We’ve weathered worse,” she told her team during a late-night meeting. “This is just another storm, and we’ll get through it.”

But as she sat alone in her office that night, the weight of it all pressed down on her. The investigation wasn’t just a threat to her company—it was a threat to her family, her future, and everything she’d fought so hard to build.

A soft knock at the door broke her thoughts. Gabriel stepped inside, his expression unreadable.

“You should get some rest,” he said.

“I can’t,” Piper admitted. “Not yet.”

Gabriel hesitated, then crossed the room to stand beside her. “We’ll get through this, Piper. You’re not alone in this fight.”

She looked up at him, her chest tightening. “I hope you’re right.”

As Gabriel left, Piper turned back to her desk, her resolve hardening. The path ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: she wouldn’t let this investigation define her.

But as her phone buzzed with another alert—this time linking her name directly to the scandal—Piper knew the battle was just beginning.
