The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 94

Ch. 94 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

We flew for hours. Or maybe minutes. Time stopped meaning anything when you were running for your life.

Havoc and I moved together with perfect coordination. The bond between us allowing unspoken communication. When he banked left, I was already following. When I dove through narrow spaces, he covered my flank. We were one entity split between two forms.

Behind us, Whisper pursued with relentless patience. She didn't have to catch us immediately. Just had to wear us down. Exhaust us. Wait for mistakes.

And we would make mistakes eventually. Already were. Havoc's fire breath was getting weaker. My wings ached from hours of flight. We couldn't sustain this forever.

Below us somewhere, Morgana and Saren had escaped on foot. I'd seen them reach the lower city. Seen them disappear into forest. They were safe. Had to be safe.

We just had to survive long enough to reach them.

Whisper breathed ice-wind again. Bitter cold that made my wings seize. Made flight suddenly harder. More painful.

Havoc countered with fire. Creating warm thermals that gave us lift. But his fire was weaker now. Not the explosive heat from earlier. Just enough to keep us airborne.

We were failing. Slowly but surely. Running out of strength while Whisper seemed tireless.

Air dragons in their element. This was what they were built for. Endurance flight. Pursuit. Hunting through impossible skies.

We dove into another canyon. This one deeper. Darker. Walls so close I had to tuck my wings tight. Havoc barely fit. His wingspan scraping stone on both sides.

But Whisper fit easily. Smaller. More agile. Built for tight spaces.

She was gaining. I could feel her through some sense I didn't understand. Feel her True-Sight locked on my gift. Following the blue fire of healing magic that burned in my soul.

I pushed understanding through the bond to Havoc. Told him she was tracking me. That my gift was a beacon. That separating might save him even if it doomed me.

His response crashed through the bond. A wall of absolute refusal. Of stubborn, loving insistence.

Together or nothing. Those weren't words but they were meaning. Were certainty so deep it left no room for argument.

If I fell, he fell. If I was captured, he'd die fighting beside me. If I lived, he lived. No separation. No splitting up. No one left behind.

The depth of his devotion made my chest ache. Made me want to cry and scream and fight harder all at once.

Fine. Together then. We'd find another way.

We burst out of the canyon into open sky. Mountain peaks in every direction. Snow and stone and treacherous winds.

Whisper emerged behind us. Close now. Close enough I could see her pale scales. Could count the golden stripes marking her royal blood. Could see her eyes tracking me with supernatural precision.

She breathed ice-wind. Not at me. At Havoc. Trying to force him down. Trying to separate us despite the bond's insistence.

Havoc rolled. Avoided the worst of it. Breathed fire back. Weaker than before but still dangerous. Superheated air creating turbulence. Making flight harder for everyone.

We flew into clouds again. Thick ones that obscured everything. Using what cover we could find.

But Whisper followed easily. Her True-Sight letting her see through any obstruction. See the gift burning in my soul like a star in darkness.

There was no hiding from that. No escaping it. As long as I had the healing gift, she could track me.

An idea formed. Desperate. Stupid. But maybe possible.

What if I stopped burning so bright? What if I pulled the gift inward? Made it smaller? Less visible?

I didn't know if that was possible. Didn't know how gifts worked beyond healing wounds and accidentally flooding caves. But I had to try something.

I focused inward. Felt the healing magic flowing through me. Blue fire inherited from Mother. Water's rare gift that made me valuable and hunted.

I pulled at it. Tried to make it smaller. Quieter. Less like a beacon and more like an ember.

The magic resisted. Didn't want to be contained. Was meant to flow outward. To heal. To help. To burn bright and beautiful.

But I forced it down. Compressed it. Made it small and hidden and quiet inside me.

The effect was immediate and terrible. Pain lanced through me. Like trying to contain fire in paper. Like holding water in a sieve. Like fighting against my own nature.

But it worked. I felt the beacon dim. Felt my gift become less visible. Less obvious.

Behind us, Whisper's pursuit faltered. Just slightly. Just enough to tell me she'd lost clear tracking.

Havoc felt my pain through the bond. Sent concern. Worry. But I pushed back reassurance. Told him I was okay. That this was working. That we just had to endure a little longer.

We dove. Changed direction. Using the moment of Whisper's confusion to break line of sight. To actually hide instead of just running.

Into another valley. This one with a river running through it. Trees on both sides. Cover. Shadow. Places to hide if we could just reach ground.

We landed hard. No grace. Just controlled crashing. Both shifting back to human immediately.

"Are you hurt?" Theron grabbed my shoulders. Studied my face. "You look pale."

"I'm fine." Lie. I felt like I was burning from inside. Like containing the gift was destroying me slowly. "I just—I made it smaller. Less visible. Gave us time."

"How long can you hold it?"

"I don't know." Everything hurt. "Minutes maybe. We need to move. Put distance between us and where we landed. She'll search the whole area."

We ran. Through forest. Splashing through the river. Using water to hide our scent in case she had tracking methods beyond True-Sight.

My gift was fighting me. Wanting out. Wanting to burn bright again. Wanting to be what it was meant to be.

I held it down. Forced it quiet. Even though every second felt like dying.

"There." Theron pointed. "That valley. Something's wrong about it."

He was right. The valley ahead looked wrong. Too green for this altitude. Too sheltered for this exposure. Trees that shouldn't grow here. Magic creating illusion or protection or concealment.

We ran toward it. Hoping it was shelter. Hoping magic would hide us. Hoping we could stop running for just a few minutes.

Behind us I heard roaring. Whisper searching. Furious. Determined.

We reached the valley. Crossed some invisible boundary. Magic wrapped around us like being submerged in warm water. Comfortable. Safe. Hidden.

I released the gift. Let it burn bright again. The relief was immediate. Pain fading. Breathing easier. But also making me visible again.

Except Whisper's roaring was above us now. Outside the valley. She couldn't see us. The magic was working. Concealing us. Hiding my gift's beacon.

We collapsed against trees. Gasping. Alive. Hidden.

"We made it," I whispered.

"For now." Theron was scanning our surroundings. "This place has strong magic. Concealment. Protection. Someone made this. Someone powerful."

Movement in the trees. People appearing. Surrounding us. Not threatening but cautious.

All of them had that slight glow. That sense of power beyond normal magic. Gifts. Every one of them had rare gifts.

We'd found them. Or they'd found us. The hidden village. The gift-bearers who'd survived Eclipse's hunts. Who'd built a refuge where they could live without fear.

"Welcome," one woman said. Silver eyes glowing with True-Sight. "Welcome to the last sanctuary. Where Eclipse cannot reach. Where gift-bearers live free."

She stepped closer. Studied us with those supernatural eyes.

"You're the healer," she said. "The one Eclipse is hunting. The one whose mother they killed twenty-one years ago."

"You knew my mother?"

"No. But we know Eclipse's patterns. Know they killed a healer in Cindravale two decades ago. Know they're hunting another healer now." She smiled sadly. "History repeats. Unless we break the cycle."

"How?" I asked. "How do we break it?"

"By surviving. By fighting back. By exposing Eclipse for what they are." She gestured. "Come. Rest. Heal. Then we'll discuss how to destroy the organization that has hunted us for generations."

I looked at Theron. Saw exhaustion and relief mixing on his face. We'd escaped. Found shelter. Were alive and safe and together.

Morgana and Saren were out there somewhere. Hopefully safe. Hopefully heading to the nomad camp where we'd agreed to meet.

But first we needed rest. Needed to recover. Needed to understand what we'd found and what it meant.

We followed the gift-bearers deeper into the hidden valley. Into sanctuary. Into whatever came next.

Together. Still together. Still alive.

And for the first time since this chase began, I let myself hope we might actually survive this. Might actually find a way to fight back. Might actually stop Eclipse before they killed another gift-bearer.

Might actually honor Mother's memory by succeeding where she'd failed.

By surviving. By fighting. By refusing to let fear and hunting and Eclipse win.

We had found allies. Found sanctuary. Found hope. Now we just had to figure out how to use it.
