The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 85

Ch. 85 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

The Earth Kingdom caves were oppressive.

Dark. Cold. Carved through solid rock by generations of earth magic. The fastest route to Skyreach according to Lyric, our nomad guide. But walking through tunnels with millions of tons of stone overhead made my skin crawl.

"How much further?" Morgana asked. Her voice echoed strangely in the enclosed space.

"Two more hours through this section." Lyric led with a torch. Young woman. Maybe twenty-five. Mixed earth-water heritage with competence that came from years of knowing these routes. "Then we reach the main cavern where—"

She stopped dead. Torch held high. Listening.

We all froze. The only sound was our breathing. Water dripping somewhere distant. The subtle settling of ancient stone.

Then I heard it. Movement. Lots of it. Coming from ahead.

"Ambush," Theron said quietly. Already reaching for his sword. "Back up slowly. We'll find another route."

"No other routes." Lyric's voice was tight with fear. "This is the only passage wide enough for groups. Everything else is single-file crawl spaces."

The movement got louder. Closer. Torchlight appeared in the tunnel ahead.

Then they emerged. Twenty. Maybe thirty soldiers. Earth Kingdom armor. Military formation. Weapons drawn.

And at their head, a dragon.

Massive brown dragon with scars crisscrossing his hide. Earth element visible in the way stone seemed to shift around him. Black warrior stripes marked his chest.

He shifted to human form. A man in his fifties. Military bearing. Cold eyes that assessed us like targets instead of people.

"Princess Ravenna," he said. His voice echoed through the caves. "General Stone of Pyrstone's military. You're coming with us."

"I don't think so." Theron moved in front of me. Protective.

"That wasn't a request." Stone's expression didn't change. "You have a rare gift. One that requires study. Assessment. Proper containment for the safety of all kingdoms."

"Containment?" I kept my voice steady despite fear crawling up my spine. "You mean imprisonment."

"I mean processing." Stone gestured. His soldiers moved to flank us. Blocking retreat. "Gift-bearers are dangerous. Unstable. History proves this. You will be taken to secure facilities. Studied. Your gift documented. Possibly harvested for the greater good."

"Harvested?" Morgana's voice was sharp. "You mean killed and dissected."

"If necessary." Stone said it like he was discussing weather. Calm. Clinical. "The needs of kingdoms outweigh individual rights. Especially when those individuals possess power that could destabilize everything."

"I'm not going with you." I stepped forward despite Theron's protest. "I'm not some experiment. Some thing to be studied and harvested. I'm a person. And I'm going to Skyreach."

"No. You're not." Stone shifted back to dragon form. The brown dragon materialized huge and scarred. "You're coming to Pyrstone. Dead or alive. I'd prefer alive for study purposes. But dead works too."

"RUN!" Lyric shouted. She grabbed my arm. Started pulling me back the way we'd come.

But Stone moved faster. Earth magic surged. The ceiling above us cracked. Collapsed. Tons of rock falling to block our retreat.

We barely dove out of the way. Stone and dust everywhere. When it cleared, the tunnel behind us was completely sealed.

"Trapped," Saren said grimly. "Only way out is through them."

"Then through them it is." Theron shifted. Havoc materialized in the enclosed space. Too big for the cave really but he managed. The red-black dragon roared challenge.

Battle erupted.

Stone used earth magic viciously. Collapsed tunnels. Created rock projectiles. Manipulated the entire terrain. This was his element. His territory. He had every advantage.

Theron fought with fire magic superheating stone until it exploded. Chunks of molten rock flying. Soldiers screaming as burns overwhelmed them.

Saren used water to cool overheated rock. Creating steam that filled the tunnel. Blinding everyone. Turning the battlefield into chaos.

Morgana defended me. Fought with fire magic and her sword. Competent against soldiers but outmatched by the sheer numbers.

Lyric used earth magic too. Smaller scale than Stone but effective. Creating barriers. Shifting ground beneath soldiers' feet. Fighting against her own element to protect us.

I tried to help. Tried to use healing magic defensively. But I didn't know how. Didn't understand my gift well enough to weaponize it. Just stood there useless while everyone fought for me.

Stone focused on Havoc. The two dragons clashing in enclosed space. Fire and earth. Heat and stone. Devastation that shook the entire cave system.

"The ceiling!" Saren shouted. "They're going to bring it all down!"

He was right. The fighting was destabilizing everything. Cracks spreading. Stone groaning. Millions of tons of rock about to crush us all.

"We need to end this!" Theron—Havoc—roared.

He and Stone crashed together. Claws and teeth and fury. Havoc was larger but Stone had terrain advantage. Could manipulate stone. Could create weapons from the environment.

A rock spear materialized. Drove through Havoc's shoulder. He roared pain but didn't stop. Just ripped the spear out and kept fighting.

Blood everywhere. Soldiers falling. Dragons locked in combat. The entire battlefield chaos.

Then I felt it. Felt water in the air. Moisture from Saren's steam. Blood from injured soldiers. Underground streams running through rock.

Felt it all and PULLED.

Water surged. From everywhere. From nowhere. From every source in the entire cave system. Responding to my call. To my desperate need.

It slammed into Stone's soldiers. Swept them off their feet. Created a wall between us and them.

But I'd pulled too much. Too hard. The water kept coming. Kept building. Started flooding the tunnel.

"Ravenna, STOP!" Saren grabbed my arm. "You're going to drown us all!"

I tried to stop. Tried to control it. But the power had taken over. Was responding to panic instead of intention.

More water. More pressure. The entire tunnel filling.

"OUT!" Theron shifted to human. Grabbed me. "Everyone OUT! Find high ground!"

We ran. All of us. Splashing through rising water. Lyric leading toward side passages she knew. Up. Always up. Away from the flood.

Behind us I heard Stone roaring. Ordering retreat. His voice fading as water claimed the lower tunnels.

We climbed. Squeezed through narrow passages. Hauled each other up steep inclines. Water chasing us. Always rising. Always threatening.

Finally we emerged. A side exit. Night air. Mountain slopes covered in snow.

We collapsed. All of us. Gasping. Bleeding. Alive.

"What—" Morgana couldn't finish. Just stared at me. "What did you DO?"

"I don't know." My voice was shaking. "I felt water. Pulled it. Couldn't stop. It just kept coming."

"You nearly drowned everyone." But Theron was smiling. Relieved. "Including Stone and his soldiers."

"Is he dead?" I looked back at the cave entrance. Water still pouring out. Flooding down the mountain.

"Don't know." Saren was checking his injuries. "But he won't be following us soon. That entire tunnel system is flooded. Will take days to drain."

"He said something." I replayed the conversation. "He said I'd be 'processed.' That my gift would be 'harvested for the greater good.' Like I was a resource instead of a person."

"Eclipse," Lyric said. She was wringing water from her hair. "That's Eclipse language. General Stone is part of the organization. High-ranking probably."

"A general." Theron's voice was dark. "In Pyrstone's military. That means Eclipse has infiltrated the highest levels of Earth Kingdom government."

"Not just Earth Kingdom." Saren looked grim. "Remember the assassination attempt? Attackers from all kingdoms. Eclipse is everywhere. Has people in every government. Every military. Probably every court."

"Lady Seris from Skyreach," I said. "General Stone from Pyrstone. Who from Cindravale? Who from Aetherwyn?"

Silence. Because we didn't know. Couldn't know. Could suspect but not prove.

"We need to get to Skyreach," Morgana said. "Find those libraries. Learn everything we can about Eclipse. Figure out who they are and how to fight them."

"Agreed." Lyric stood. "But not through the caves. Stone will recover. Will send more soldiers. We need alternate routes."

"Over the mountains?" Saren looked at the snow-covered peaks. "That'll add days to our journey."

"Better than walking into another ambush." Lyric started walking. "Come on. I know mountain passes Eclipse doesn't watch. Harder. Colder. But safer."

We followed. Exhausted. Injured. But alive.

I looked back once at the flooded cave entrance. At the water still pouring out. At the destruction I'd caused with magic I didn't understand.

General Stone had called me dangerous. Unstable. A threat to kingdoms.

Maybe he was right. Maybe I was dangerous. Had nearly killed everyone with that flood. Had used power I couldn't control in panic.

But I was alive. We all were. And Stone was trapped or drowned or at least delayed.

We'd survived another attempt. Another attack. Another piece of Eclipse trying to capture or kill me.

"The Eclipse will find her wherever she goes." Stone had shouted that. Right before the water hit. Absolute certainty that they'd catch me eventually.

Maybe they would. Maybe Eclipse was too big. Too organized. Too embedded in every kingdom.

But I was going to Skyreach anyway. Was going to learn everything I could. Was going to fight back.

Because Mother had died running. Had died trying to hide. Had died thinking she could avoid Eclipse through caution and secrecy.

I wasn't going to make that mistake. Wasn't going to hide. Wasn't going to wait for them to find me.

I was going to find them first. Learn who they were. What they wanted. How they operated.

And then I was going to destroy them before they could kill another gift-bearer.

Before they could harvest another person for the "greater good."

Before Eclipse won again.

We climbed into the mountains as night fell. Toward Skyreach. Toward answers. Toward whatever came next.

Together. Always together. And ready to fight.
