POV: Morgana
I find Rav in her chambers that evening.
She's sitting on the floor. Not the bed. Not a chair. The FLOOR. Staring at nothing. Processing nearly dying for the—what, TENTH time this year?
I've lost count.
"Move over," I say.
She shifts. I sit beside her. We both lean against the bed. Knees drawn up. Staring at the opposite wall like it holds answers.
"Remember when this started?" I ask after a moment. "The competition. When your father announced it and you threw that spectacular tantrum in the council chamber?"
"I threw a vase."
"You threw THREE vases. And called him a controlling bastard. In front of the ENTIRE court."
She snorts. "Good times."
"Simpler times." I pause. "You know what I was back then? When this whole disaster started?"
"My long-suffering lady-in-waiting?"
"Yes. EXACTLY." I look at her. "I was just—lady-in-waiting. Minor noble's daughter assigned to protect spoiled princess. My job was making sure you didn't embarrass yourself too badly. Making sure you attended events without setting anything on fire. Basically—damage control."
"You were more than that."
"Was I?" I consider. "I was your friend. Definitely. But I was also—limited. Small. I didn't THINK big. I just—existed in small space your father allowed me."
Rav turns to look at me. "Where is this going?"
"I'm PROCESSING." I gesture vaguely. "Because when we started this journey months ago, I was just lady-in-waiting trying to protect her friend. And now?" I look at my hands. Still shaking slightly from overusing shield gift. "Now I'm a warrior who's KILLED people to defend someone I love like a sister."
"Morgana—"
"No, let me finish." I need to SAY this. Need to PUT WORDS to everything rattling around in my skull. "I've killed people, Rav. Eclipse agents. Soldiers. I took LIVES. Me. The girl whose biggest concern used to be which dress you'd wear to court functions."
"You were always a fighter."
"No. I was competent with a sword. That's different from being a fighter. From being a WARRIOR." I swallow hard. "From being someone who kills without hesitation when her sister is threatened."
We sit in silence. Both processing.
"And Saren," I continue. Voice softer now. "When this started, he was just—annoying water kingdom guard who followed you everywhere. I thought he was cute but irritating. Now?" I smile despite everything. "Now I love him so much it terrifies me. Like—bond-level love. Soul-deep love. The kind where I'd burn the world down if someone hurt him."
"That's how I feel about Theron," Rav says quietly.
"I know. I SEE it." I pause. "And I have SHIELDS now. Actual gift. Not just warrior skills but MAGIC. I manifested today because I refused to let you die. Just—refused. And my body listened. Created barrier from nothing but stubbornness and love."
"It was incredible."
"It was painful." I touch my nose where blood dried. "And exhausting. And—and mine. This power is mine. Not inherited from parents. Not trained from childhood. Just—mine because I NEEDED it."
"Most latent gifts activate that way. Through necessity."
"I know." I look at her. "But you know what's STRANGE? I'm grateful. Despite the terror. Despite nearly dying. Despite everything." I gesture at my whole body. "I'm grateful this happened. Because I finally know who I AM."
"Who are you?" Rav asks gently.
"I'm Morgana." Saying it feels like truth. Like certainty. "I'm a warrior. A fighter. A shield-bearer who protects people she loves. Saren's future wife. Your sister-not-by-blood-but-by-choice." I pause. "I'm someone who matters. Not because of family name or position. But because I chose to matter. Chose to fight. Chose to become more than I was."
"You were always more than you were."
"No." I shake my head. "I had potential to be more. But I was—comfortable. Safe. Didn't push boundaries because pushing meant risk." I meet her eyes. "You know what changed? YOU. You running. You surviving. You REFUSING to be what others expected. That inspired me to become more than lady-in-waiting playing it safe."
Rav's eyes are bright with tears. "You're going to make me cry."
"Good. You need to cry more. You bottle everything up like—"
"Like I learned from years of Father never showing emotion?"
"Exactly." I bump her shoulder with mine. "But you're getting better. You cried when Theron left for war. That's growth."
"I cried because I might lose him."
"You cried because you love him. And you're not afraid to feel it anymore." I pause. "That's growth too. Letting yourself be vulnerable. Letting people IN."
We sit there. Two women who've been through hell together. Who've survived everything kingdoms threw at them. Who've become family through shared trauma and stubborn refusal to quit.
"I'm scared," Rav admits quietly. "About the war. About Eclipse. About—about losing people. Losing YOU. Or Saren. Or Theron. Or Father."
"I'm scared too." Honesty feels right. "I'm terrified. Every day. That next battle will be the one where someone I love doesn't come back." I take her hand. "But I'm also CERTAIN. We're going to survive this. All of us. Together."
"How do you know?"
"Because we've survived everything else." I squeeze her fingers. "We survived assassination attempts. We survived military coups. We survived being hunted across kingdoms. We survived The Shadow TODAY." I pause. "We're too stubborn to die, Rav. Too determined. Too—too US."
She laughs. Wet and broken but real. "Too us. I like that."
"It's who we are." I lean my head against hers. "Stubborn disasters who refuse to die gracefully."
"Morgana?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you. For everything. For staying with me. For protecting me. For—for becoming my sister."
"You're welcome." My voice is rough. "Thank you for showing me I could be more than I was. For inspiring me to FIGHT instead of just existing. For—for being worth protecting."
We stay like that. Heads together. Hands clasped. Two women who started as princess and servant. Who became friends. Who transformed into SISTERS through fire and blood and absolute refusal to abandon each other.
"When this is over," Rav says eventually, "when the war ends and Eclipse is destroyed and peace is possible—"
"You're getting married to Theron," I finish. "And I'm getting married to Saren. And we're having the most RIDICULOUS double wedding Cindravale has ever seen."
"Double wedding?"
"Obviously. You think I'm getting married without you there as equal partner?" I pull back to look at her. "We're doing this together. Like we've done everything together."
"That sounds perfect."
"It does." I smile. "It sounds perfect and ridiculous and completely us."
"When did we get so sappy?" Rav asks.
"When we almost died for the TENTH time and realized life is too short not to say how we feel." I stand. Pull her up with me. "Come on. Let's get food. Process trauma through eating like normal people."
"I'm not normal people."
"No. You're a hybrid princess with healing gift who's being hunted by secret organization while kingdoms war over her." I grin. "But you're MY hybrid princess. My sister. And I'm never letting you forget it."
"I wouldn't want to forget."
"Good." I link my arm through hers. "Now let's go steal something from the kitchens and pretend we're not terrified about what comes next."
"That's your solution? Stealing food?"
"That's my solution to everything."
We walk toward the kitchens together. Two women who've been transformed by journey they never wanted. Who've become more through survival and stubbornness and love.
Sisters. Not by blood. By choice. And that's stronger than any bond.
