The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 123

Ch. 123 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Theron

The battle ends at sunset.

We hold the line. Barely. Water kingdom forces retreat. Regroup. Prepare for tomorrow's assault. Same pattern for eight days now. Fight. Retreat. Fight again. Endless grinding warfare that accomplishes nothing except filling graves.

I shift back to human form. Havoc to Theron. My body aches. Burns across my chest from water attacks. Gash on my left arm. Nothing serious. Nothing that won't heal. Just—painful.

Around me, soldiers collapse. Exhausted. Some crying. Some staring at nothing. Processing what they saw. What they DID.

I've seen this before. Wars in border territories. Skirmishes that escalated. Violence that became routine. But this feels different.

This time I have something to lose.

I think about Ravenna constantly. Her smile when she thinks no one's watching. The way she heals without hesitation. How she chose me despite every reason not to. How she makes me want to LIVE instead of just survive.

I promised to come back to her. I intend to keep that promise.

"You're thinking about her again." Hadrian drops beside me. His dragon form is scarred from today's fighting. Burns. Cuts. He needs a healer but there aren't enough to go around. "The princess."

"Ravenna," I correct. Not princess. Not title. RAVENNA.

"Right. Ravenna." He grins despite exhaustion. "You know you've changed since bonding with her."

"Have I?"

"Yes." He's not joking now. Serious. "Before, you had this—exhaustion. In your eyes. Your posture. The way you moved through the world. Like you were just—enduring. Waiting for it to end." He pauses. "That's gone now. Replaced with—purpose. Intent. Like you have reason to be here beyond just refusing to quit."

I consider this. "I have something to fight FOR now. Not just something to fight against."

"Her?"

"Her. Us. The future we're building." I touch the bond in my chest. Feel Ravenna distant but there. Safe in the capital. "I'm not just surviving rejections anymore. I'm living FOR something."

"Good." Hadrian's voice is warm. "You deserve that. Deserve happiness after—everything."

We sit in silence. Two warriors who've seen too much. Done too much. Survived when others didn't.

"Do you regret it?" Hadrian asks eventually. "Entering the competition. Risking rejection. Again."

"No." The answer is immediate. Certain. "Never."

"Even with war? Eclipse hunting her? All the complications?"

"Especially with that." I look at him. "The complications prove it matters. That we're building something real instead of easy. That we're worth fighting for." I pause. "Five rejections and years of pain were worth it to find her."

"You love her."

It's not a question. But I answer anyway. "More than I thought possible. More than I knew I could love anyone."

"She loves you too. I saw it during the competition. The way she looked at you even when she was trying to sabotage everyone." Hadrian smiles. "Like you were the only real thing in a world of performance."

"She makes me feel real." The admission feels vulnerable. But true. "Like I exist beyond the scars and rejections. Like I'm person worth knowing instead of just—damaged warrior everyone pities."

"You were always worth knowing. You just didn't believe it."

"I believe it now." Because Ravenna chose me. Looked at my broken face and saw something worth keeping. Felt the bond and decided to ACCEPT instead of reject. "She showed me I was worth surviving for. Worth LIVING for."

"That's what love does." Hadrian stands. Groans. "Makes idiots like us want to live instead of just existing."

"You speak from experience?"

"Obviously. You think I married Kira because I enjoyed her cooking?" He grins. "I married her because she made me want mornings. Want futures. Want stupid domestic moments." He pauses. "Same as you want with Ravenna."

"Yes." I stand too. Body protesting every movement. "When this war ends. When Eclipse is destroyed. We're getting married properly. With ceremony and witnesses and everything she deserves."

"Good. I expect an invitation."

"You're my second-in-command. You're OFFICIATING."

"Oh gods." But he's smiling. "Fine. I'll officiate your wedding. Try not to cry during vows."

"No promises."

We walk toward camp. Toward food and brief rest before tomorrow's fighting. Around us, soldiers prepare. Some sleep. Some sharpen weapons. Some stare at fires seeing ghosts.

War is brutal. Always has been. But this war feels—wrong. Thalassa's obsession. Aldric's desperation. Two kingdoms bleeding over one woman who just wants to be LEFT alone to live her life.

"This has to end soon," I say quietly. "The war. Before we lose too many. Before—"

"Before Volcris sees opportunity and invades while we're weak?" Hadrian's voice is grim. "Already considered that. Aldric has too. That's why we're holding defensive positions instead of pushing forward. Trying to minimize casualties while hoping Thalassa sees reason."

"Will she?"

"I don't know." He looks at the battlefield. At the blood-soaked ground. "But if she doesn't, we lose. Not to her. To Earth Kingdom waiting to devour us both."

I think about Ravenna safe in the capital. About her healing wounded. About her facing Eclipse attacks because she refuses to hide while people die. About her CHOOSING to fight instead of surrender.

She's braver than she knows. Stronger than she believes. Everything I survived for.

"I'm coming back to her," I say. More promise than statement. "Whatever happens in this war. However bad it gets. I'm surviving and coming HOME."

"I believe you." Hadrian's hand clasps my shoulder. "You survived five rejections. You'll survive this too."

"We both will. Because your wife would kill me if I let you die."

"Truth." He grins. "Kira is terrifying when angry."

We reach camp. Eat quickly. Rest briefly. Tomorrow brings more fighting. More death. More grinding warfare that serves no purpose except feeding Thalassa's obsession.

But I endure. Because Ravenna waits for me. Because we have futures to build. Because love gives purpose beyond just surviving.

I survived five rejections through willpower alone. Through absolute refusal to die.

Now I survive through love. Through wanting mornings and futures and stupid domestic moments with woman who chose me.

That's stronger than willpower. Stronger than stubbornness. Stronger than anything I've faced before.

Love makes you want to LIVE. Not just exist. Not just endure. LIVE.

And I intend to live. With Ravenna. For decades. Building the future we both fought so hard to reach.

The war won't stop me. Eclipse won't stop me. nothing will stop me from keeping my promise.

I will survive. I will return. I will marry her.

That's not hope. That's certanity.

And I've learned through five rejections and years of pain that my certainty is absolute.

When I decide to survive, I SURVIVE.

No matter what.

For her. For us. For the life waiting on the other side of this war.

I close my eyes. Feel the bond connecting us across distance. Feel her there. Safe. Waiting.

I'm coming home, Ravenna. I promised.

And I keep my promises.

Always.
