POV: Ravenna
The messenger from Earth Kingdom arrives during breakfast.
I'm with Father in his private dining room when guards announce urgent diplomatic correspondence. Father's face goes tight. Worried. He gestures for the messenger to enter.
The man is Earth Kingdom through and through. Solid build. Brown and grey coloring. Stoic expression that gives nothing away. He bows to Father. Ignores me completely.
Typical.
"King Volcris sends message to King Aldric of Cindravale." His voice is flat. Professional. "And to Queen Thalassa of Aetherwyn through your diplomatic channels."
"Speak," Father commands.
The messenger pulls out sealed letter. Official. Heavy with wax seals and importance. Hands it to Father.
Father breaks the seal. Reads. His face goes PALE. Actually pale. I've never seen him look like that—shocked and terrified simultaneously.
"What?" I demand. "What does it say?"
He doesn't answer. Just keeps reading. Getting paler with each line.
Finally, he looks up. At the messenger. "Is Volcris serious about this? Or is it posturing?"
"King Volcris is always serious about territorial acquisition." The messenger's voice is still flat. No emotion. Just stating facts. "He has mobilized forces. If Fire and Water kingdoms do not immediately cease hostilities, he will interpret your weakness as opportunity."
"Opportunity for what?" I ask.
Father answers. His voice hollow. "Invasion. Conquest. Claiming our territories while we're too weak from fighting each other to defend properly."
My stomach DROPS. "What?"
Father hands me the letter. I read.
King Aldric and Queen Thalassa,
I write to inform you of opportunity created by your foolish war. While Cindravale and Aetherwyn bleed each other over personal dispute, you weaken yourselves. Make yourselves vulnerable.
Earth Kingdom has largest standing army. Most aggressive military doctrine. Most resources for sustained conquest.
I hereby inform you: Cease hostilities immediately or face joint invasion. I will not wait while you destroy each other. I will accelerate the process. Take both kingdoms. Claim your territories. Absorb your resources.
You have ONE WEEK to establish formal truce and demonstrate commitment to peace. After that, Earth Kingdom forces move. And you will be too weak and divided to stop us.
This is not negotiation. This is fact.
King Volcris of Pyrstone
I read it twice. Three times. Trying to process the sheer arrogance. The certainty. The—
"He's not bluffing," I whisper. "He's actually going to do this."
"I know." Father's voice is grim. "And he CAN. Earth Kingdom has resources. Military strength. And we're weak right now. Fighting each other instead of defending ourselves."
"But—but Thalassa—she can't possibly—"
"She's received a similar message." The Earth Kingdom messenger gestures to a sealed letter for Thalassa. "King Volcris requires I deliver both. Through your diplomatic channels to ensure swift communication."
"Swift THREAT," I mutter. But I take Thalassa's letter. "I'll ensure she receives this."
The messenger bows. Leaves. No additional commentary. Just—delivered the threat and gone.
Father and I stare at each other.
"We've been idiots," he says finally.
"What?"
"We've been fighting each other. Bleeding ourselves. Creating exactly the chaos someone wanted." His voice is sharp with self-recrimination. "This war between Fire and Water? It's been manipulation from the start."
"Manipulation by who?"
"Seris." He's standing now. Pacing. "Think about it. The Eclipse benefits from chaos. From kingdoms weakened and distracted. From gift-bearers caught in crossfire." He stops. "What better way to create that chaos than triggering war between two kingdoms?"
I process this. "You think Seris orchestrated this? Used Thalassa's obsession and your desperation to—"
"To create conflict that serves Eclipse purposes. Yes." He looks at me. "And we FELL FOR IT. Like idiots. Like—like children being led by nose."
"But Thalassa genuinely wants to control me. That's real."
"Yes. But someone might have encouraged that obsession. Provided intelligence. Suggested strategies. Made war seem more appealing than negotiation." He runs hands through hair. "We've been dancing to someone else's tune. And now Volcris sees weakness and prepares to devour us."
I sink into a chair. "So what do we DO?"
"We stop the war." His voice is absolute. "Immediately. Before Volcris makes good on his threat."
"Thalassa won't listen—"
"She'll listen to this." He gestures at Volcris's letter. "Because she's not stupid. Obsessed, yes. But not stupid. She knows Earth Kingdom threat is real. She knows fighting ME while facing Volcris is suicide."
"So you negotiate?"
"So we unite." He's moving now. Calling for messengers. For advisors. For everyone. "Fire and Water kingdoms ALLY. Formally. Immediately. Present united front to Volcris so he sees we're not weak. Not divided. Not opportunity."
"Will that work?"
"It has to." He looks at me seriously. "Because the alternative is both kingdoms fall. Get conquered. Absorbed. Everything we've fought for gone because we were too stubborn to see manipulation happening."
More messengers arrive. Hadrian bursts in. Master Veyron. Lysander. Everyone gathering because Father's urgency is contagious.
"Volcris threatens invasion," Father says without preamble. "We have one week to establish truce with Aetherwyn or face joint conquest."
Silence. Everyone processing.
"That's—" Hadrian starts.
"Credible," Veyron finishes. "Earth Kingdom has forces. Resources. Aggressive military culture. If they see opportunity—"
"They'll take it," Father confirms. "So we remove the opportunity. We cease hostilities with Thalassa. Establish formal alliance. Show united front."
"Thalassa has to agree," Hadrian points out.
"She will." Father's voice is certain. "Because she's not suicidal. And fighting two-front war against both Fire Kingdom AND Earth Kingdom is suicide."
"What about the Eclipse?" I ask. "If you ally with Thalassa, if you stop fighting each other—they lose the chaos they created. They'll respond."
"Let them." Father's expression is cold. "We've been distracted too long. Time to refocus. Fire and Water kingdoms unite against common enemies—Volcris AND the Eclipse."
He starts issuing orders. Fast. Precise. Messengers dispatched to Thalassa. To Air Kingdom requesting Seer Council mediation. To the front lines ordering immediate ceasefire and troop withdrawal.
The war room transforms into organized chaos. Everyone moving. Everyone purposeful.
"This changes everything," Lysander says quietly beside me.
"I know."
"Your grandmother will have to negotiate. Will have to SEE you. Talk to you."
"I know."
"Are you ready for that?"
"No." I'm honest. "But ready doesn't matter. Necessary does." I look at the frantic activity. "We end this war. Before Volcris destroys us. Before Eclipse kills more people. We END it."
"And then?"
"Then we fight the real enemies." My voice is steel. "Not each other. But Volcris. And Seris. And everyone who tried to manipulate us into destroying ourselves."
Lysander smiles. "Your mother would be proud."
"Mother would have prevented this war from starting." I'm bitter. Frustrated. "She would have SEEN the manipulation. Would have—"
"Your mother is dead." His voice is gentle but firm. "You're alive. And you're doing what SHE would have done—ending the war before more people die unnecessarily."
I nod. Swallow past the lump in my throat.
Father catches my eye across the room. Gestures me over.
"We're sending delegation to meet Thalassa," he says. "Neutral territory. Air Kingdom mediation. Formal truce negotiations." He pauses. "You're going."
"WHAT?"
"You're the reason for this war. Your presence proves you're not prisoner. Not captive. Not—" He stops. "You're proof that Thalassa's justification is lie. And your testimony about Eclipse might convince her to ally against common enemy."
"She'll try to take me."
"Not with Air Kingdom witnesses. Not with diplomatic immunity." His voice is firm. "This is necessary, Ravenna. You have to face her. Have to SHOW her you chose this life. Chose me over her."
"When?"
"Three days. Enough time to arrange everything. To ensure safety." He looks at me seriously. "Can you do this?"
Face Thalassa. The grandmother who tried to control me. Who started a war to reclaim me. Who refuses to accept my choices.
Can I do this?
"Yes," I say. Voice steady despite fear. "I can do this."
Because I HAVE to. Because ending the war matters more than my fear. Because people are dying and I can STOP it.
Three days. Three days until I face the grandmother who started this whole disaster. Three days to prepare. Gods help us all.
