The Dragon Princess and the Warrior

Chapter 115

Ch. 115 / 150 Apr 06, 2026

POV: Ravenna

We're still discussing how to approach Thorne when the door SLAMS open.

A messenger. Young. Covered in road dust and blood. Breathing like he RAN here. Like he FLEW here on wings made of desperation and terror.

"Your Majesty!" He gasps. "Urgent news from the Water Kingdom border!"

Father goes very still. That warrior stillness that means he's already calculating threats. Already preparing for terrible news.

"Speak," he commands.

"Thalassa." The messenger swallows hard. "Queen Thalassa of Aetherwyn has declared war on Cindravale. Claims you're holding Princess Ravenna prisoner against her will. Demands her immediate return to Aetherwyn or—" He stops. "Or face destruction."

The room EXPLODES.

Everyone talking at once. Shouting. Demanding details. I just sit there. Frozen. Because this is—this is MY FAULT. My escape triggered this. My grandmother is using me as excuse to—

"How many troops?" Father's voice cuts through the chaos. Cold. Focused. Commander instead of father.

"Initial reports suggest two thousand water kingdom warriors crossed the border three hours ago." The messenger's voice shakes. "Not skirmishing patrols. Full INVASION force. They've already taken two border villages. Killed anyone who resisted. Left messages demanding Princess Ravenna's return."

"Two THOUSAND?" Hadrian is already on his feet. "That's a full military campaign. Not posturing. Not testing. Actual WAR."

"I thought the truce was holding," Veyron says sharply. "After Silas's confession. After the Eclipse connection was revealed. Thalassa AGREED to stand down pending investigation."

"She lied," I say quietly. My voice sounds distant. Hollow. "Or she found new excuse. Or she—" I look at Father. "She's been planning this. The Eclipse crisis just gave her cover. Made it seem like she's protecting me instead of conquering territory."

Father's jaw clenches. "Hadrian. Mobilize the military. All units. Dragons. Ground forces. Everything. We defend our borders."

"How far do we defend?" Hadrian asks. "Defensive positions or counterattack?"

"Defensive for now. I won't invade Aetherwyn over this." Father's voice is sharp. "But I WILL protect our people. And I will make clear that Ravenna is HERE by choice. That Thalassa's claims are lies."

"Will she believe that?" Lysander asks quietly. "Or will she dismiss it as coercion?"

"I don't CARE what she believes." Father looks at me. "Ravenna. You need to make a public statement. Today. NOW. Telling Cindravale and Aetherwyn that you're here voluntarily. That your grandmother is wrong. That you—"

"That I chose Father over grandmother." My voice is steady despite the terror choking me. "That I reject Thalassa's authority. That I'm CINDRAVALE'S princess, not Aetherwyn's puppet."

"That will make her more angry," Saren says. He looks sick. "That will make the war WORSE."

"The war is already happening," I snap. "Making it worse means making it HONEST. No more pretending this is about protecting me. This is Thalassa trying to control me. Trying to conquer territory. Trying to—" I can't finish. Because my own grandmother is doing this. My own family is attacking Father's kingdom.

More messengers arrive. Rapid succession. Each with worse news.

"Water kingdom forces advancing inland! They're not stopping at the border!"

"Three more villages taken! Casualties mounting!"

"They're demanding PRINCESS RAVENNA or they burn everything!"

Father is issuing orders. Fast. Precise. Hadrian running to execute them. Veyron coordinating aerial dragon units. The council chamber transforms into war command center in MINUTES.

"Someone get me maps!" Father barks. "I need to see their advance. Need to know where they're headed. Need to—"

"They're headed HERE," Theron says quietly. He's looking at reports. Analyzing. "Look at the pattern. They're not trying to take territory. They're driving toward the CAPITAL. Toward the palace. Toward—"

"Toward Ravenna," Father finishes. His face goes WHITE. "They're coming to TAKE her. To kidnap her in the name of rescue."

"Can they reach the capital?" Morgana demands.

"If we don't stop them?" Hadrian looks grim. "Yes. Two thousand warriors is significant force. We can defend but it will be BRUTAL. Lots of casualties. Lots of destruction."

"Then we stop them at the border," Father says. "We hold defensive positions. We make Thalassa's advance too COSTLY to continue."

"That means war," Veyron says bluntly. "Full war between Fire and Water kingdoms. Not skirmishes. Not posturing. Actual war with thousands dead on both sides."

"I know." Father's voice cracks slightly. "But what's the alternative? Surrender my daughter to a grandmother who will imprison her? Start negotiating from position of weakness? Let Thalassa TAKE what she wants through force?"

Silence. Because he's right. There IS no good option. Only terrible choices with different casualties.

"I could go," I say quietly.

Everyone turns to look at me.

"If I surrender to Thalassa. If I go to Aetherwyn willingly. Maybe she stops the invasion. Maybe she—"

"Absolutely NOT," Father says. His voice is IRON. "I will not trade my daughter for temporary peace. Thalassa wants you imprisoned. Controlled. USED. I won't allow that."

"But the war—"

"Is THALASSA'S choice. Not yours. She chose this. She declared war. She sent troops." He looks at me fiercely. "You are not responsible for her decisions. And you are not going to Aetherwyn as prisoner just to make her stop."

"Father—"

"NO, Ravenna." He's standing now. Towering. "I failed to protect your mother from the Eclipse. I failed to see the danger until too late. I will not fail to protect you from Thalassa. Even if it means war. Even if it means—" His voice breaks. "Even if it costs me everything."

Something in my chest cracks. "Father."

"I love you," he says. Raw. Honest. "I have always loved you. I was just—I was drowning in grief and didn't know how to show it. But I love you. And I will fight an entire kingdom before letting anyone take you against your will."

I'm crying. Trying not to. Failing. "I love you too."

He crosses to me. Pulls me into another fierce embrace. "Then we fight together. Father and daughter. King and princess. Family against everyone trying to tear us apart."

"Together," I whisper against his chest.

More messengers. More reports. The war advancing in real-time while we stand in council chamber trying to process impossible decisions.

"Your Majesty!" Another messenger. This one from palace guards. "Cassian Lucien is demanding audience. He heard about the invasion. He's—"

"Tell him I'm handling it," Father says without releasing me. "Tell him I'll summon him when ready."

"He's insisting, Your Majesty. Says as your advisor he has right to—"

"Tell him no." Father's voice is absolute command. "And if he persists, have guards escort him to his quarters. Confined until I decide what to do with him."

The messenger bows and runs.

Father looks around at everyone assembled. "This is where we are. War with Water Kingdom. Eclipse embedded in our court. Political chaos. Evidence that needs gathering. Testimony that needs extracting." He pauses. "But we have something they don’t have. We have truth. We know who the enemy is. What they've done. Why they must be stopped."

"Truth doesn't win wars," Veyron says grimly.

"No." Father's smile is sharp. "But it gives us reason to fight. Purpose beyond survival. Justice instead of just violence." He looks at each of us. "The Eclipse wanted us divided. Thalassa wants us weak. House Ashford wants us distracted. But we're none of those things. We're united. We're strong. And we're done being victims."

He looks at Hadrian. "Defend our borders. Make Thalassa's advance cost everything."

He looks at me. "Make that public statement. Tell the kingdoms who you are and what you choose."

He looks at everyone. "And prepare for war. Because everything just escalated beyond anyone's control."

"And it's going to get worse before it gets better."

I stand in that war room. Surrounded by maps and reports and people I love preparing for battle. And I realize this is it. The moment everything I've been running from catches up. The moment I stop being prey and become something else.

Something dangerous.

Something FIGHTING instead of fleeing.

War is coming.

The Eclipse will be exposed.

Thalassa will learn I can't be controlled.

And I'm going to survive ALL of it. Or die trying. But preferably survive.

Because I have a wedding to plan. A future to build. A life to live beyond constant terror.

And I'm done letting other people's wars steal that from me.

Time to end this. All of it. Starting now.
